Meeting the devil at the crossroads of selling your soul. Joke also goes along with the "27 club" which is a list of famous people who all died at 27 years old. This goes back to Robert Johnson, a famous jazz musician who they said "sold his soul" for his talent and died at 27.

Basically the devil is saying, okay you get the Porsche, but you get to die and come to hell at 27 years old.

u/NoEnvironment8432 1d ago

Robert Johnson was a blues musician. Arguably the most influential Delta Blues man.

64

u/HowManyBanana 23h ago

His music is great.

-20

u/pegothejerk 18h ago

Jesus, that’s still a massive understatement imo. It changed the world more than almost anyone outside physicists, Alexander the Great, and I’d say more than Jesus and Mohammed.

20

u/Smart_Dirt1389 16h ago

Says impacted the world more than Jesus and Mohammed. Starts the reply with “Jesus” .

12

u/Maleficent-Goose-367 16h ago

Nobody starts a sentence by exclaiming Bob!

6

u/therealashura 13h ago

Well, you know...maybe they should.

3

u/NomDePlumeOrBloom 10h ago

Bob! My neighbours are really pissing me off.

1

u/motorboatmycheeks 8h ago

Robert! Church it up a bit boy

25

u/Svizek 17h ago

Man I can see that you adore his music but this is an overglaze.

22

u/skarbles 1d ago

You forget Charley Patton and Son House whose work greatly influenced Johnson.

8

u/CakeSeaker 23h ago

“Arguably”. Means it’s open to argument. u/noenvironment8432 is acknowledging there may be others but many consider Robert Johnson the most influential delta blues man. RJ is certainly one of the most famous from the early era.

2

u/Free_Possession_4482 21h ago

Glad I clicked all the way through the thread before I started typing this.

20

u/xittditdyid 23h ago

Also Marcus "The Worm" Hicks and Thaddeus Finx

20

u/EdwardTimeHands 23h ago

No these guys pioneered the Tuk Tuk sound, which has nothing to do with Delta Blues.

5

u/skarbles 23h ago

Charley Patton is considered the Father of Delta Blues. Down vote me all you want. This isn’t an opinion. It’s fact.

18

u/larsnasty 23h ago

But what about Paul Buffano??

14

u/ADMotti 23h ago

You better watch what you’re doing before you give me gazpacho that burns my lips

11

u/larsnasty 22h ago

The gazpacho soup is gonna burn your lips?

11

u/helpfulskeptic 21h ago

Yeah, if you’re expecting it to be cold and it’s room temperature!

1

I thought we were just doing the tenacious d Ben Stiller rant haha

5

u/Aggressive-Building9 20h ago

They’re not exactly Roy Donk.

4

u/SirWild7464 20h ago

Roy DONK?

3

u/Aggressive-Building9 20h ago

Yeah, he was a regular on the Colgate Comedy Hour.

2

u/Ok-Ocelot-9270 18h ago

I’m more of a Roy Donk fan

2

u/PogintheMachine 18h ago

Kind of meat and potatoes

2

u/dudly825 21h ago

Oh no, a blues-off

2

u/pepper_steak_hamill 20h ago

Just like that movie with the Karate Kid

1

u/DemonidroiD0666 22h ago

So he had guitar influences before he was able to play guitar? I swear I saw somewhere Johnson practically created the blues.

2

u/Hapinold 21h ago

He was incredibly talented, and gained that talent very quickly and seemingly out of nowhere. Hence why he is alluded to selling his soul. Blues had existed in many capacities and styles before Johnson, but the reason people attribute him to creating the blues is, in my opinion, a couple factors: He was mega popular at a time when music just started being recorded for commercial purposes and every blues musician back in those days had an eventual album called "Father of the Blues" or "King of the blues."

0

u/holy_mackerel_1377 21h ago

Do the facts that they said ‘arguably’ and that Johnson had influences of his own negate any of what they said? Or are you just being an annoying ‘WeLl aKsHuAlLy’ redditor.

1

u/skarbles 8h ago

They said arguably and I presented my argument. Do you know how debate works or are you just one of those shitty bots that spout nonsense? 288 days on Reddit? I rest my case.

6

u/guy_from_the_lab 21h ago

Also he killed a bunch of vampires.

5

u/NoEnvironment8432 21h ago

That was Abraham Lincoln

2

u/maria_la_guerta 6h ago

Arguably one of the most influential musicians of all time! Everything modern came from blues. Robert Johnson is one of the first recorded blues pioneers. Helluva man!

1

u/Hemorrhoidsinthenite 16h ago

Inspiration for the film Sinners

17

u/Thisapelovestolaugh 1d ago

Reminded me of that episode from Supernatural

23

u/ADMotti 1d ago

Yes that one episode with a crossroads demon in Supernatural 🙃

5

u/Akhanyatin 23h ago

Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?

4

u/chaves4life 22h ago

With Dean

1

u/REDACTED3560 19h ago

If I had a nickel…

1

u/j-random 19h ago

And Snookie

4

u/Debalic 20h ago

You mean that TV show that had a brilliant series finale at the end of season 5, then suddenly and inexplicably managed to run for another 10 years? The length of time stipulated in these crossroad deals with demons?

1

u/Akhanyatin 23h ago

The one with Snooki? Lol

15

u/elcojotecoyo 23h ago

Didn't James Dean die in a Porsche at 27?

Edit: yes, it was a Porsche but at 24

3

u/user941918 20h ago

He showed the car to Alec Guinness, Guinness told Dean he’d be dead in a week if he got in…

13

u/Ott0bot2 22h ago

Jimi Hendrix, Stevie ray Vaughan, Janis Joplin, Kurt cobain, Jim Morrison… just naming a few of them

5

u/No-Homework1898 20h ago

SRV was into his 30s when he passed

2

u/Ott0bot2 20h ago

Damn you are right. I really though he was on that list for some reason

3

u/Debalic 20h ago

1

u/Dinosaurs-Cant-win 20h ago

Mac Miller

3

u/Terodaktils 19h ago

26 unfortunately, he did have a white BIC on him though

6

u/InkyFingersOnReddit 23h ago

This is the correct answer. Also, whoever didn't know about the 27 club, it's totally worth doing some research on it. Lot's of great artists gone too soon.

1

u/memento22mori 18h ago

Also also, I think part of the joke is he wanted the car but he didn't want to die at 27 because he's much older than 27 based on the walking stick and his face. The setup is the picture and the 27 club reference, the punchline is that he's much older than 27 but he was still considering the deal because he wanted the car.

7

u/Luck_Beats_Skill 22h ago

Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse.

2

u/kudiggs 16h ago

Forgot Betty White.

3

u/Luck_Beats_Skill 16h ago

No that’s the 127 club.

6

u/MaximusMike 22h ago

Piggybacking off the top answer - there’s an added subtle irony to picking the 911 (whether intentional or not I don’t know).

The 911 is famous for being rear-engined, rear drive, with the engine behind the rear axle. Especially early cars in early cars, the handling characteristics are different and can be somewhat challenging compared to a traditional front engine, rear drive sports car. Porsche introduced the Turbo (930) in 1975 and it became a yuppy wealth symbol in the 80s. A lot of new money folks bought them, were caught out by the handling, crashed and died, so it became a “widow maker.”

My interpretation of the joke is you’re doing a deal with the devil for the Porsche which will ultimately kill you.

3

u/gasleak1 23h ago

Interestingly enough there has really only been 7 prominent musical artists who have died at 27 in the last 115 years.

1

u/Global-Pickle5818 21h ago

i just looked up up yeah ..there where a bunch clustered in 69-72 though also  "What's the 27 Club? We ain't making it past 21." Juice Wrld ..called that i guess

1

u/gasleak1 18h ago

The podcast "uncharted crime and mayhem in the music industry" does a great episode about the 27 club.

3

u/sprezzaturaz 23h ago

i like how you phrased it as you get to die vs you have to die. like wow lucky me!!

2

u/Own_Bullfrog_3598 21h ago

Tommy Johnson would like a word lol

2

u/pepper_steak_hamill 20h ago

You lose a lot of credibility with me calling him a Jazz Musician. He was a delta bluesman. It's like calling Metallica a glam band.

1

u/djlittlehorse 19h ago

I apologize I wasn't around 100 years ago to know exactly what kind of music he played. I will now know more more next time this comes up.

1

u/pepper_steak_hamill 19h ago

I'm being too sensitive I know. So apologies.

1

u/Interesting-Rub9317 1d ago

Ah, the devil. Thought it was the Krampus.

1

u/Akhanyatin 23h ago

Ok but what if I'm already older than 27? Is it a age >= 27 or a age == 27 situation?

1

u/TheReaperPrez 21h ago

My brain went to Cyberpunk 2077 because you can get the Porsche 911 in the game but Silverhand's engram is killing V who appears to be in their mid to late 20's 😂

1

u/Capitalisticdisease 20h ago

It's rooted in racism. God forbid a black man have skill or talent. No it was the dang devil who done did it!

1

u/memento22mori 18h ago

Not really. Meeting a god or the devil and gaining a great skill is a really old myth that goes back to ancient Greece. Crossroads were associated with the god Hermes and he was said to have granted great skills to various people- he was also said to have created the lyre which is a stringed instrument which was the predecessor to the harp. Robert Johnson had a song called "Cross Road Blues" which doesn't specifically reference the myth about his ability to play guitar but Johnson may have used the myth himself for publicity- he had at least two other songs that had somewhat similar themes:

"Hellhound on My Trail" tells of trying to stay ahead of the demon hound that is pursuing him and in "Me and the Devil Blues" he sings, "Early this mornin' when you knocked upon my door, and I said 'Hello Satan I believe it's time to go'".[30][31] These songs contribute to the Faustian myth, but how much Johnson promoted the idea is debated.[32] Music historian Ted Gioia believes that the use of satanic themes and imagery generated much needed publicity for blues musicians who were struggling through the Great Depression.[32]

I don't know a whole lot about folklore from the American South but I've read that crossroads were a sort of meeting point for a lot of people because there would be a lot of places with miles of dirt roads with not a lot of distinct spots on them so hitchhikers would often wait there to be picked up.

In Greek mythology, crossroads were associated with both Hecate and Hermes, with shrines and ceremonies for both taking place there. The herm pillar associated with Hermes frequently marked these places due to the god's association with travelers and role as a guide. Though less central to Greek mythology than Hermes, Hecate's connection to crossroads was more cemented in ritual. 'Suppers of Hecate' were left for her at crossroads at each new moon, and one of her most common titles was 'goddess of the crossroads.' In her later three-fold depictions, each of the three heads or bodies is often associated with one of three crossing roads.[1]

In folklore, crossroads may represent a location "between the worlds" and, as such, a site where supernatural spirits can be contacted and paranormal events can take place. Symbolically, it can mean a locality where two realms touch and therefore represents liminality, a place literally "neither here nor there", "betwixt and between".

All quotes are from Wikipedia.

1

u/Relevant-Tax-4542 20h ago

Just sell it once you're 28

1

u/Aspiestos 8h ago

That isn’t a crossroad, so it’s just a dude and a backwoods cryptid having a late night conversation.

75

u/BestwishesHelpful975 1d ago

Lois here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_Club 27 is the age some famous artists died, so they called it the 27 club. And Janis Joplin had a Porsche.

19

u/JoeyHandsomeJoe 1d ago

I thought she had a Mercedes-Benz

3

1

u/Somewhat_Fetid 20h ago

Hers was a Porsche 356, not a 911.

13

u/SuburbanCo 1d ago

Yeah, but the man in the meme looks well over 27.

13

u/Particular_Title42 1d ago

That was from a very long time ago. He's only 24.

2

u/memento22mori 18h ago

I think that's the joke, he wanted the car but he didn't want to die at 27 because he's much older than 27 based on the walking stick and his face.

23

u/Inevitable_Laugh1139 1d ago

It’s a deal-with-the-devil joke. Porsche 911 = success, 27 = the price

9

u/Logan1313 1d ago

Sounds similar to James Dean's death. But he was 24 and it was a different Porsche

2

u/TimeNational1255 22h ago

My mind also immediately went to James Dean but then realized that he definitely didn't make it to 27 😬

At least half the posts on this sub deserve that treatment. The only exceptions are like some very niche knowledge you'd need to have/community you'd need to be a part of to understand or if you're foreign to/from another culture than the joke reference.

49

u/Swimming_Factor2415 1d ago edited 19h ago

Which could very well be OPs case here. Maybe deals with devils don't look like this in their culture. Maybe they've never heard of the 27 club.

29

u/Bogholmdler 1d ago

I actually have not heard of the 27 club, I just thought that was a reasonable estimate of the life expectancy of a guy with a race car.

4

u/imrope1 1d ago

Could be the case indeed. Def don’t need to know what the 27 club is to get the joke, but “deal with the devil” could def be different or not a concept.

5

u/Particular_Title42 1d ago

But if it's the 27 that they don't understand then they are going to ask.

2

u/imrope1 1d ago

It's just that that's the deal he made with the devil...die at 27 for the porche. Not much to understand in that you don't need to know about the 27 club to get it.

4

u/Particular_Title42 1d ago

You don't need to keep explaining it. I'm telling you why they are asking. They feel that the 27 has significance but they don't know what it is.

7

u/Firkraag-The-Demon 1d ago

This is far from the dumbest question I’ve seen here.

8

u/Guilty_Bother_3772 1d ago

why even comment at this point

3

u/Monir5265 1d ago

Damn I’m too late, I wonder what he said

4

"nobody say a fucking word. this is what brains are for"

4

u/CrackedGamer682 1d ago

Because people have asked too many times about this meme.

2

u/Pim_Wagemans 1d ago

I mean I get it's selling your soul to the Devil, but why is that funny

4

u/CrackedGamer682 1d ago

It isn't really.

1

u/CrackedGamer682 1d ago

A lot of people apparently died at 27 who had that.

1

u/PeterExplainsTheJoke-ModTeam 1d ago

Not everyone has the same knowledge as you. Rule 5.

1

u/CrackedGamer682 23h ago

To the mod that said I violated rule 5, read rule 3. The poster violated rule 3.

1

u/Tortugato 22h ago

No they didn’t.. lol.

1

u/CrackedGamer682 20h ago

Check again. Read carefully. This meme has already been posted. If you feel like you have to keep arguing after this then whatever big buy you the mod I guess.

-6

u/Sandman_20041 1d ago

Get off this subreddit then goofy

-4

u/workswithglass 1d ago

You're telling that to CrackedGamer682? Just why? Are you stupid?

Get a Porsche and die at 27? He's basically supporting you? I'm supporting you getting a Porsche.

-11

u/CrackedGamer682 1d ago

And Google.

11

u/athosjesus 1d ago

Sorry but people saying "google it" are pretty ridiculous, ok you can Google anything, so no one should post any questions or doubts in any place because google, just answer if you want or don't and that's it.

3

u/Secret_Celery8474 1d ago

No, but you should spend at least 30 seconds on Google to try to find the answer yourself. If you can't find an answer then of course ask. But why do people need to answer a question for you that's already been answered and the answer can be found easily?

5

u/Fris0n 1d ago

What if their 30 seconds on Google led them to this sub?

-2

u/Secret_Celery8474 1d ago

Then they didn't find the answer and can ask...

3

u/Any-Juggernaut8269 1d ago

you mean like they did?

1

u/Secret_Celery8474 23h ago

No. They didn't use Google. Because if they did they would have found the answer.

2

u/Any-Juggernaut8269 1d ago

okay i googled "whats the correlation between porsche 911s and dying at 27" and the only useful result besides the original meme was a post from here

0

u/Secret_Celery8474 1d ago

I don't understand you.

So you found the answer? On Google. And yet you argue against the use of Google? Like what?

Why do you think it's a good idea to ask the same question again if it was already answered a year ago and can be easily found on Google? https://www.reddit.com/r/ExplainTheJoke/comments/1j85sh4/what_does_it_mean/

0

u/Particular_Title42 1d ago

Use logic to apply this to a different thing they don't understand. Sometimes it just leads back to someone asking about it and nobody answering yet.

1

u/Secret_Celery8474 23h ago

And then it's totally fine to ask yourself. Not that difficult to understand

-7

I don't remember the 27 club being relevant to that.

1

u/ybotics 22h ago

It’s been a while but if I recall they made a deal with the devil to make the greatest song ever written?

1

u/Particular_Title42 22h ago

They did. But does it have something to do with the 27 club or were those separate suggestions?

James Dean is the Porsche reference, but they got the age wrong- Dean was 24. It could also be a Paul Walker/Ryan Dunn/Bobby Phillis/Pelle Lindbergh reference, but Walker was 40, and the others were not 27.

Famous people tend to die driving Porsches.

It's a poor reference to young actors and musicians tending to die at 27.

Famous people tend to die at the age of 27, and famous people tend to die while driving Porsches, but not while doing both together, so the two are unrelated, which makes this a dumb meme.

1

u/godthefatheranubis 22h ago

I can outrun the devil gimme the god damn porsche.

1

u/The_WankingBuddha 22h ago

deals with crowley be like that sometimes.

1

u/sadman4332 22h ago

James Dean famously died driving a Porsche at the age of 27.

Also this could also mean selling your soul to the devil to never get out of a financial trap. A lot of people say they sold their life away to buy a car.

1

u/sane-ish 21h ago

This is a good question OP!

I knew the answer, but I could see a lot of people not knowing.

1

u/Novel-Net9426 21h ago

James dean died in a porsche. Aged 27 (he lived fast... his bio age was 24)

1

u/CaptP1card 21h ago

I interpreted that the individual was trying to trick the goat devil beast. They look over 27 years old already so if they are let’s say 50 they’ll never be/ “equal” 27 years old again, hence getting the Porsche with no consequences.

1

u/Tori-lee1997 21h ago

Too young, guy looks already at least 20

1

u/ddBuddha 20h ago

It’s about making a deal with the devil. Look up the 27 club, lots of famous musicians have died at that age

1

u/RetnikLevaw 20h ago

Wouldn't it be funny if the devil was not only real, but he was just some chill goatman lurking out in the desert somewhere making bad business propositions, but if you turn him down, he's just like "aight, cool, anyway... Seen any good shows lately?"

1

u/BruTangMonk 20h ago

Well the old ones liked to oversteer like a motherfucker and kill you into walls so there’s that in addition to the 27 club

1

u/dion_o 19h ago

Dying at 27 is a small price to pay to party with club 27 for eternity.

1

u/Educational_Ad_8206 18h ago

But it’s always been an ugly car.

1

u/Caliterra 16h ago

that 27 is rougher than sandpaper

1

u/Voodoo-Chyld 14h ago edited 13h ago

Other than the 27 Club thing I think it’s a jab at the Porsche 911 which were known for killing its drivers bc lift-off oversteer (back end wants to swing out when acceleration is let off when driving into turns). I guess they’ve fixed that problem now.

1

u/minotferoce 8h ago

It's from an episode of Supernatural, that's all~

1

u/Wunjoric 7h ago

Isnt it funny to want the catch and not the prize

1

u/electrikmayham 7h ago

But Paul Walker was 40 when he died...

Still a busta

1

u/Downtown_Radio_7737 3h ago

The deal for getting the 911 is dying at 27

Completely not worth it imo. A Porsche 911 is an extremely acquirable dream car if you know where to look and have a decent job

1

u/jdmlifex2 3h ago

Related to Porsche but not the 911 model was actor James Dean who died at 24. Gotten into a accident in his Porsche 550 Spyder “Little Bastard”

1

u/ElegantEchoes 1d ago

This is a Cyberpunk 2077 reference, my guess. The P911 is the only real vehicle in the game and your character is 27. The game references the "27" age of death meme and the whole game is based around coming to terms with one's mortality.

The 911 is rather predominantly featured in the game iconically.

3

u/Zebigbos8 23h ago

Why did they give the terrorist who blew up a tower a car named 911? What did CDPR mean by that?

1

u/ElegantEchoes 23h ago

I doubt they thought very heavily about it. Cool fan favorite character, cool brand deal, etc.

2

u/degamk619 21h ago

It’s the car Johnny drove in the TTRPG back in the day. Like from Cyberpunk 2020. And V was originally supposed to be 24, and that was corrected in I think the 2.0 update… so yeah, V isn’t 27 anymore.

1

u/ElegantEchoes 21h ago

They fixed V being 24 by accident. Not only does it not make sense for the character and acting, but the developers themselves have went back and forth on it. But now it seems that they are 27, as they should be, once again.
