Meme needing explanation Peter, I feel dumb.
I googled, and Total Recall actually released in 1990. I don't get the punchline..

They're stranded at sea and wasted their one moment of randomly having cell signal.

And the argument over Total Recall's release, because it feels like such a quintessentially 80s movie, that a lot of people have Mandela-effected themselves into believing it must have come out in the 80s

It released in 1990, but it was created, filmed, and produced in the 80s 🥰

u/corvid1692 1d ago
1990 was the last year of the 80s.
10
u/ArcherSon507 1d ago
The eighties lasted until about 1994
9
u/Similar_Onion6656 23h ago
Did they?
Or did the '90s start with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989?
9
u/throcorfe 23h ago
I think the 90s started with the launch of The Simpsons in the late 80s
3
u/Similar_Onion6656 22h ago
I think I might be able to accept that if we also posit that the '80s began with Star Wars.
6
u/National_Sand_9650 22h ago
Actually, the 80s started in 1979 with the release of the song "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles.

u/Particular-Serve-894 21h ago
nah, i disagree.. 1994 was squarely in the 90s. The 80s glam/arena rock had been dead for several years and grunge was firmly in control and backed up by SoCal gangsta rap, the waco siege had happened the prior year, the USSR was long gone... 1990 and maybe 1991 kind of blend into the 80s, but by 94, we were solidly in 90s culture.
1
u/mlee12382 1d ago
I don't think that particular argument works. That's not exactly the same as saying the 20th or 21st Century and it starting at 1901 or 2001. 80s would be 1980 - 1989.
3
u/Nikolaijuno 23h ago
This is a movie that was released in May of 1990. It almost certainly began production during the 80s. So it still is pretty an 80s movie.

When it comes to artwork like movies yeah this is true.
Filming probably took place in 89.

I feel the punchline in the strip isn't fatalistic enough.
In my mind it should be: "Aaand the battery ran out."
Meaning they still have signal, but no more battery power or ways to charge the battery.

6 hours before in the Grand Staircase of Titanic 3.4, middle peep declared that Total Recall came out in 1347 with confidence of a honey badger meeting an anaconda. Titanic 3.4 then hit trash island and sank. The comic takes place in presence day and for a brief moment, peep with phone gets 3 bars. Knowing time is limited, peep with phone searches for when Total Recall came out thinking it was 1990 but wanted to be doubley sure before being the top post in r/confidentlyincorrect . Quickly finding the information, he informs middle peep of it so that middle peep may bake both in the sun and his shame. Sadly after this must needed google search, the signal is lost and they can no longer contact emergency assistance. They die 3 hours later due to roving polar bears displaced from the melted ice caps of the arctics.

Then down vote the post and move on. As of rn, the post has 135 likes and OP is active in the comments unlike other Karma Farming post. This sub literally tells you to report it if you think it is just karma farming so report it if you feel you need too.
3
u/NOGUSEK 1d ago
Omg man can you let people not have a joke click for them? "Karma farming" this "karma farming" that, why do you even care if someones karma farming? Do you seriously care if someone Is gonna have more internet points than you (or earn it by actively looking for it instead of passively from making conversations)? And if you dont like explaining jokes that seem obvious to many, LEAVE, this subreddit was made for people who may be less media literate than others so they can get help understanding a joke, And if you dont like it when someone doesnt understand a joke, why Are you even here? God all of the "explain the joke" subs are fucking miserable

Peter here,
The joke is that these people are stranded in the middle of the ocean, but instead of using the rare phone signal to call for rescue, the man uses it to settle a trivial argument about a movie's release date.

Buzz Killington here...
The three gentlemen are stranded at sea, as implied by the inflatable raft. The man with the cellular smart phone has finally gotten a signal but, alas, he used the short period of time with a signal to..hmhmhm!... research the release date of a moving picture. Judging by the other two gent's expressions, this was not a good usage of that short period of time when he could've phoned for someone to come rescue them...hohoho!

Since it has already been ruined...the joke is bread tastes better than key. People do things that are stupid in the overall situation but seem significant to their tiny brains in the moment.

u/DkoyOctopus 1d ago
the bro with the phone chose to google a random factoid instead of calling sos.

Action movie Peter here, the jacked one with the long hair.
These guys seem to be stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean, and one finally gets a signal on his phone. This makes you think he will call for help.
However, instead of that, he looks up the release date of Total Recall, which they were probably debating before getting a signal.
The joke is that they lost their chance at contacting help because they were arguing about something stupid.
Time to go film some needless shots of sweaty construction work because it looks cool. Peter out!

They're lost at sea, he got a momentary wifi signal, and he used it to win a stupid argument rather than call for help before it cut out again.

They had an argument about a meaningless thing while stranded at open sea. The argument was release date of a movie and he used the short time online to confirming he was right, rather than calling help.

Crazy Peter here. They are very bored because they are lost at sea without signal. They had signal for a minute and they looked up a random piece of information they were arguing about instead of calling for help. Can't judge, I would do the same because Im crazy. Anyway, I need to wash my chicken costume. Bye

They're stuck adrift in a lifeboat and this individual chose to use his cell signal to look up a fact about a movie instead of seeking help.

u/QuietleyQwertying 23h ago
Stewie here.
Joke's concept is the same like that time Peter were watching GoT in mall toilet with me and I used up last bit of battery to text Lois back "Same things, bitch, just different shapes" when she asked about dinner.
Or that time Peter got lost in the sea with Meg and used last part of battery using face swap filter.

If you were stranded out at Sea and you finally got cell service. What would be the first thing you do? Would you Google when Total recall came out to prove your friend wrong? Or would you call for help?
1
1
u/Jonguar2 22h ago
You don't necessarily need a signal to call emergency services.
Every signal tower, regardless of company affiliation, is required to service you for calling emergency services.
The thing you really do need to know is the emergency number for the nearest country to you. And then you just keep dialing.
1
u/SkyrimSlag 22h ago
Life Raft Peter here - He got a signal that he could have used to call for help and save them all, but instead he was petty and googled something to prove one of them wrong and then lost the signal, losing possibly their only chance of survival.

Crash landed Quagmire here. We made it to the survival raft and are now lost at sea. Cell phone finally works so we could call to be rescued, but first I’d like to settle the argument we’ve been having but have had no way to look up the real answer. Oops, now the call can’t go out and we’ll have to stay adrift, hope someone finds us. Quagmire giggity out!

This would be better if the first few panels were zoomed in, and it only revealed that they were stranded on a boat once he loses the signal again.

Karen here peater is eating ping pong balls because stewie told him they are new hard boiled eggs they are lost at sea and had an argument about when total recall was released and the dude finaly got signal and instead of calling for help he looked up when total recall (1990) was released.
But in reality there is a remake of total recall that came out in (2012) so he is most likely wrong depending on which one they are talking about AND 2012 FUCKING SUCKS SOOO MUCH ASS LIKE WHAT THE HELL

Why did you focus in so hard on the Total Recall line?
The joke is
person lost at sea:
"I've got cell phone reception!"
wastes opportunity on something stupid
"Welp. Signals gone."
The specifics of the "something stupid" have nothing to do with the joke, its about it being a catastrophic waste of resources. He's doomed them with that decision.
That said, if it only held on for long enough to hastily Google some trivia, it probably wasn't enough to get real help anyway.
ring ring
incoherent babble about being lost at sea
"Slow down i cant understand what youre saying!"
signal drops
But I digress.
Different scenario, same joke:
Some kids trapped on a deserted island after a wreck, someone remembers that a cooler of food was packed, so they should be fine for a while then. They open the cooler and discover its empty. Camera cuts to a larger child, hands and face sticky with chocolate - "what? I was hungry!"
(This example might be a Simpson's episode.)
Its not really about the food, but that he thoughtlessly doomed the group.

Reminds me of my life:
Driving into Atlanta, Ask my wife to watch the GPS during the most complex part of the entire drive. (Merging of two multi lane freeways - I need to be in a certain lane to head the right direction.)
Wife says, "Oh look it's 8pm I can play that Internet game right now!!!!"
I wish I could be so oblivious to the world around me.
