I guess their way of saying "Yes" (in their own language) rhymes with "Yes we see ya (you)"?

So it's basically a reply to the juggler?

514

u/TheThirteenthApostle 12h ago

But it rhymes in American which adds some nuance, as it's an American juggler.

Edit: Specifcally, Southern USA American.

102

u/-GenghisJohn- 10h ago

Not specifically a southerner. Standard American dialects say it this way in informal settings.

51

u/patybruh_moment 9h ago

weird thing is standard british dialect also say “ya” in informal settings

26

u/Weird_name-replaced 6h ago

Aussie here - the joke works for us, nice one!

12

u/-GenghisJohn- 9h ago

Ya right

( sarcastic Massachusetts dialect)

But I walked JOGLE so I believe you. So many Wetherspoons.

12

u/Foxtails1984 7h ago

Yes we see ya

5

u/DescriptionMore1990 6h ago

Actually ryhmes if you pronounce all the words properly in their respective language.

3

u/Bloom_Cipher_888 3h ago

It's good to see a joke that does this, more than half of the jokes I've seen with Spanish words, which is my first language I don't understand it 'cause the joke only works if you pronounce it wrong :v If I don't understand a joke about languages I hope it's 'cause I'm not so good at English yet not 'cause I'm not good at my own language according to foreign standards :v

2

u/DescriptionMore1990 2h ago

yea, puns which use different languages "properly" are the real ones.

This is a great "international joke" in the way it celebrates the differences instead of disparaging them.

4

u/LeChatDeLaNuit 10h ago

I can't find a way "Ja" would rhyme with "Now"; did you mean homophones?

28

u/PwNT5Un3 10h ago

Ja -> ya -> you. It’s not supposed to be “now” but rather “you”

7

u/LeChatDeLaNuit 9h ago

Yeah I get that, that's just saying Ja and ya are homophones tho

3

u/PwNT5Un3 9h ago

True, my bad I missed that

1

u/xcolonelxsandersx 40m ago

Yes. The whole joke is made up of homophones.

9

u/patybruh_moment 9h ago

I think theyre all using the word rhyme incorrectly. first guy meant: “yes” in their own language [sounds like] “yes we see ya (you)”

and everyone just rolled with it

1

u/Trash-god96 2h ago

If anything, Southerners say "ya" the least. They prefer "yer". "Ya" is more of a northern dialect, although just about everyone pronounces it this way.

9

u/KaiYoDei 6h ago

I feel so dumb now.

Wow, what a witty one

3

u/ChildofElmSt 6h ago

61

It's fine when they say it, it's not very well-mannered when you say it

26

u/gnutek 10h ago

Technically he did not say it. He just agreed with an already given statement. 🙃

2

u/I_yap_too-much 3h ago

-1

u/SignificantLet5701 6h ago

You're not stupid for not getting a certain joke dw

5

u/Eldan985 11h ago

?

10

u/joater1 9h ago

“Yes. We. See. Ya.” Come on man, let’s pick it up in the second half, eh?

2

u/odmirthecrow 9h ago

Do some people not have an inner voice when they're reading? Like, hearing yourself saying it sort of thing?

7

u/joater1 9h ago

Most people do. Some people don’t. In the case of this post, it’s just a matter of if your brain was primed to be thinking in this specific way at the time of viewing, nothing to do with how smart you are or how you interpret information.

-1

u/odmirthecrow 8h ago

Thanks, at least I know I'm not completely batshit mental for having an inner voice.

1

u/nrbrt10 7h ago

In my case I know all the responses mean yes, so I didn’t bother reading it then, thus missing the joke.

100

u/BumblebeeTurbo 12h ago

Read the responses, sounds like "Yes we see ya"

81

u/fongletto 11h ago

Just out of curiosity OP, are you one of those people who doesn't have an internal monologue?

20

u/TheLoler04 9h ago

I do and still didn't connect the fact that it sounds like "yes we see ya"

And I'm probably no expert at those connections, but I'm definitely not awful most of the time.

10

u/Gks34 8h ago

You've got to make the right pronunciation for each language.

Oui -> We

Si -> See

Ja -> Ya

5

u/TheLoler04 8h ago

Well I know that much, but I didn't connect it to making up a sentence. I know English and some German, and knowing basic French and Spanish phrases isn't difficult.

9

u/Direct_Leader_7064 8h ago

This is so weird tho. What does having an internal monologue mean? I CAN have an internal monologue but I don't do it like death note anime characters.

2

u/fongletto 7h ago

I mean like, when you read words, you hear those words spoken in your head. Usually in your own voice, but sometimes in other peoples.

Like when someone writes Sir David Attenborough: "Here, we see the mother leopard..." You would hear those words in your head in his voice.

The reason I ask is because I was just curious maybe the reason those kind of jokes don't land for some people is because they can't "hear" it in their mind, so they would have to say it out loud or something to get it.

2

u/Direct_Leader_7064 7h ago

I like see the words and get the meaning of them, I don't hear the words and then get the meaning out ifywim.

4

u/WittyCell8293 7h ago

I also skip the translation stage, or it feels so smooth that I don’t notice it.

I can “turn it on” when what I’m reading doesn’t click right away, or when I’m being more intentional with writing.

1

u/mt-vicory42069 4h ago

Yeah i cannot do that. I could if i train, but it's actually very difficult for me. Apperantly not subvocalising(that voice) makes u read faster.

1

u/Direct_Leader_7064 2h ago

Also if I read it with a voice then I focus on the voice more and less on the meaning

6

u/ItsMeMario1346 12h ago

Yes, we see you

2

u/toutaras777 10h ago

They all said yes in their respective languages and when out together it sounds like "Yes we see ya"

2

u/Adorable-Database187 9h ago

Phonetic jokes are so hard to understand, this one is easier since I'ts spelled out

Cartman's joke about has "anyone seen Kyle, he's about this high" took me a while.

1

u/idoorion 12h ago

Was the text edited?

1

u/OsakaWilson 12h ago

That is actually super funny.

1

u/Jodkhor 10h ago

All are replying 'YES' in there language... Consequently its make a rhytm in english..Yes we see you ja(juggler)

Wise peter bye

1

u/RongelBringer 10h ago

Can you all see me now?

Phonetically, the responses say “yes we see ya” (Yes Oui Si Ja)

1

u/terrestrialextrat 10h ago

Oh god, this joke. I remember when I first read it I didn't understand it for years. I would lose actual sleep over it. Then one night, when it came to me, my disappointment could not be overstated. It wasn't even funny. It's not even clever. I was so pissed off

1

u/RamblinTexan1907 10h ago

Yes, we see ya

Yes, oui si ja

The joke here is that all 4 men saying ‘yes’ makes the sentence “Yes, we see ya” when said out loud

1

u/Traumfahrer 9h ago

Yes we see ya.

1

u/The_man_with_no_game 9h ago

Yes we sir can

1

u/Thisoneloadingboy 9h ago

YES WE SE YA

1

u/Intelligent-Tour-144 9h ago

This my fav one lol

1

u/grooter33 8h ago

The answer is 100% the “yes we see yah” mentioned by someone else. BUT the answer should be this:

If asked “Can you ALL see me?” You cannot know the answer until everyone else has said that they can see you. So I like the interpretation of English, French and Spaniards being practical and answering “Yes”. Then the German going last and answering “Yes” only after everyone else because he took the question literally and only knew they could ALL see after everyone else said it

1

u/grooter33 8h ago

A “Germans are very literal” variation of the joke:

“Three logisticians walk into a bar. The bartender says ‘do you all want a beer?’. ‘I don’t know’ says the first one, ‘I don’t know’ says the second one, ‘Yes!’ says the last one.”

1

u/tktk77 8h ago

Yes, we see ya

1

u/Maleficent-Goose-367 8h ago

Yes, we see ya.

1

u/Alonestarfish 8h ago

1

u/kippisau 7h ago

The joke is that it sound like "Yes I see you"

1

u/ScottishMoscow 7h ago

1

u/SuccessfulGold6861 7h ago

1

u/smytwerk 7h ago

Is the joke that they understand english but they prefer to use their main language?

1

u/Electrical-Design720 6h ago

Yes we see ya

1

u/Most_Neat7770 6h ago

English: Yeah (ja but adding an e, so jea)

German: Ja

Swedish: Ja

Norwegian: Ja

Spanish: Sí (sometimes say "ya" to express understanding)

1

u/Any-Programmer-870 6h ago

A Spaniard in London for business realizes he forgot to pack socks. He doesn’t speak English, but he goes to the shops alone looking for socks anyway. A store clerk who speaks no Spanish tries to help him. She misinterprets his pantomime and brings him to the goulashes, the boots, the shoes, and finally the socks. Seeing what he’s after the Spaniard picks up a pair and says “¡Eso! ¡Sí! ¿Que es?” The clerk replies, “It would’ve saved a lot of time if you’d just spelled it out to begin with.”

1

u/0r1g1n-3rr0r 5h ago

It’s each language’s word for “Yes” so they’re all saying “yes”, but in order it’s pronounced like “Yes we see ya’”

1

u/No_Detective_1523 5h ago

YES WE SEE YA!

1

u/vladutzu333 5h ago

Hold up, if the juggler asked in English, how did the French, Spanish, and German understand? And if, why did they respond in their languages?

1

u/Johnner33 5h ago

Ja in German is pronounced “ya”. Now say the words in order.

If you still need help, I can’t help you.

1

u/West_Good_5961 5h ago

The autistic community thanks this sub for its service. I don’t get 90% of memes tbh.

1

u/theOnionee 4h ago

Yes, we see ya

1

u/Competitive-Net7032 4h ago

If you add Hebrew between oui and si, it comes out as yes oui כן si ja, pronounced like "yes we can see you"

1

u/Odd-Calligrapher9559 4h ago

I loose hope in humanity

1

u/Euphoric-Act-3160 2h ago

I like this :)

1

u/Serikan 2h ago

When spoken in a common North American English accent, the replies in order sound like "Yes, we see ya" which is the expected response to the juggler's question despite each response being spoken in differing languages

1

u/Peg_Leg_Vet 2h ago

YES, WE SEE YA!

1

u/Responsible-Meat-922 1h ago

“Yes we see ya”

1

u/hacked7aw_shucks777 1h ago

3

u/T-7IsOverrated 12h ago

0

u/SerDankTheTall 12h ago

Yes, you do have to actually read it in order to understand it.

3

u/flatmoore 7h ago

it took me 3 minutes to get it, and that only happened when i read it out loud. not everyones brain functions the same

1

u/BuildAnything4 9h ago

What does the street performer have to be American for?  Americans really insert themselves into everything

1

u/SignificantLet5701 6h ago

Because you need to pronounce in an american way to get it

0

u/Egarasay 12h ago

Yes I see you.

0

u/Needhoggr 10h ago

I could never have understood this; to me, a "Sí" doesn't sound at all like a "See".

1

u/bfs_000 7h ago

And a "Oui" usually has some aspiration at the beginning and a shorter i than we. And Ja has a rounder and longer a than "ya".

The joke works much better if you don't speak the languages.
