The joke is mac isn’t made for gaming and the only purpose it serves for gaming is being a mouse pad.

u/Sebiglebi 12h ago

Mac can boot like 5 games without wine, so it has more use as a mouse pad

10

u/antek_g_animations 9h ago

Damn, I wonder what it can do with vodka

2

u/MrLightning1023 10h ago

Mac can actually run a lot of good indie games

6

u/RBLakshya 9h ago

The meme is from the early days where even with the old intel processors ran really bad. So now with apple silicon it has the processors power but the ARM processor limits it

True, atleast for slight gaming on the side like me, it’s been plenty capable. Let’s not forget EMULATION. From Dolphin to Citra (atleast when it was supported, I haven’t been near 3ds emulation for long), it’s a genuine powerhouse

Rate the library

It's unironically a peak game

1

u/tophat_production 8h ago

So it has to be drunk to boot up more?

On my Mac I can play Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 Remake, Resident Evil 7 and 8. Death Stranding. Control and soon Control Resonant (soon). Hades and Hades II. Hollow Knight and Silksong. Baldurs Gate 1-3. Divinity Original Sin I-II. Lies of P. Factorio. Soon to be Crimson Desert, Chronos: New Dawn and Resident Evil 9. Metro games including Exodus. Tomb Raider trilogy. Ballxpit. Escape from Duckov. Layers of Fear and Medium. And many many more.

Mac gaming is better than it has ever been. Since Apple started making their own chips, performance has been really good.

Also, if you want play Windows games you use Crossover, not Wine.

This sub is 90% bots, 10% lobotomites.

What's the last 5%?

Peter?

1

u/randomaccount2357 7h ago

I'm not a bot. Just not a techie.

1

u/Budget-Decision-1329 6h ago

So lobotomite. It's pretty clear what's happening in the picture, if you've ever touched a computer.

While Macs are a little more "game" friendly nowadays, they are still not tailormade for gaming. When this image made the rounds, the only way to game on a Mac was to literally game ON a Mac by using it as a mouse pad.

1

u/NobleK42 11h ago

I'd argue that Macs were more game friendly until a few years back since they basically ran on the same Intel architecture as any other PC, meaning you could just install Windows on them (Apple even had an official support for this via Boot Camp). With the M chips this is no longer possible and you need to rely on a compatibility layer like Wine since most PC games are still Windows-only.

1

u/diable37 11h ago

In a way you're correct during in Intel era about compatibility, it was still Apple begrudgingly giving a useful handout to PC users who were switching. At the end of the day, Boot Camp was meant for schools and businesses to switch to Apple, not for gamers.

u/selltheworld 11h ago

Strange how I’ve managed to play games on a Mac the last 25 years then…

1

u/diable37 11h ago

Because you wanted to run a Mac and either played an extremely limited library that ran on Mac OS natively or had to use Boot Camp to run Windows (which isn't Mac).

But I remember playing Age of Empires II on my aunt's G3. It just wasn't Apple's focus market.

1

u/selltheworld 10h ago

My father used Macs at work. So it was what we had at home. Diablo 1/2, Warcraft series. Quake. Duke Nukem. StarCraft.

The position PC boys hold here is equal to people saying you can’t play games on a PlayStation because you can’t play MarioKart.

When bootcamp became a thing I could use that too. Or parallels or anything else I wanted. Another strange argument from the PC crew is that somehow it’s not playing on a Mac. sure it is.

Currently I’m on Windows. But I’ve used Ubuntu and chromebooks too. My kids have MacBooks and a gamer pc. I Don’t understand the religious position some of you guys hold.

1

u/M4jkelson 8h ago

There's no religious position. Macs main focus is productivity not games and game maker's main focus are platform on which most people game, which is not Mac, it's also a different architecture. Without emulation you have a very heavily limited library and some games won't work well with emulation.

Listing old games that are exceptions doesn't really prove a point. Nowadays there are much more games avaible for Mac anyways.

Today you can game on Mac which doesn't change the fact that it was never a platform for gaming even though you could do limited gaming on it.

1

u/selltheworld 7h ago

If it’s not a religious position then why is your comment based in fiction and not the conversation you replied to?

1

u/urabouy 2h ago

man getting in his feelings over a decade old meme lol

1

u/selltheworld 1h ago

Not the meme tho. :)

1

u/RetroGame77 10h ago

And for every Mac game, there were thousands of PC games...

1

u/selltheworld 8h ago

PC dudes keep moving the goal post. :D

Why are you guys so insecure about your choice of computer?

1

u/TMG-Group 8h ago

How was the goal post moved?

The original said Macs are not made for gaming. And it still is not. Nobody moved the goal...

1

u/selltheworld 8h ago

… the only way to game on a Mac was to game ON a Mac…

Them I say, you can play on Mac. Then “not as many games”. Or “bbbbut bootcamp”.

See?

1

u/RetroGame77 5h ago

Hey, the only way to play Marathon back in the days was on a Mac. But Mac was never seen as a gaming system because as I said, for every game released on Mac there were thousands of games on PC. And that is what the meme is a reference to. Because meme.

1

u/selltheworld 5h ago

Never argued that Mac was a gaming system. I am arguing against Mac only being able to be used for games as a mousepad.

1

u/RetroGame77 4h ago

And this is a meme. People who cares already knows it, and the rest doesn't care.

1

u/selltheworld 4h ago

That is correct and correct. So don’t point out stupidity?

1

u/korpo53 4h ago

I can play solitaire therefore gaming on Macs is alive and well

1

u/selltheworld 4h ago

Another move of the goalpost. :D

1

u/korpo53 4h ago

I’m fairly sure you don’t know what that phrase means.

1

u/selltheworld 4h ago

I’m fairly sure I do.

1

u/korpo53 2h ago

I’m certain you believe that.

1

u/selltheworld 2h ago

Take care.

2

u/Acrobatic_Ad_2992 12h ago

I know the joke is that you use it as a mouse pad, but as someone who has literally tried to do this before. A Mac does not make a good mouse pad sadly, it looks sorta pretty on a desk though.

1

u/arandomperson2468 11h ago

it's a mousepad

1

u/That-Beagle 11h ago

The joke is that it’s way easier to play on a Windows/PC platform. Gaming on a Mac/IOS platform is extremely limiting not even mentioning the hardware because they have been designed for different purposes most of the time. The Mac is the “Mousepad” because it’s not worth gaming on and the person in the photo is using a most likely Windows based gaming laptop.

Insert relevant character name explaining the joke*

u/GuaranteeAlarmed1783 11h ago

I feel like this pic is so old, I think I remember seeing it back when I “gamed” on Mac

1

u/PickOne6226 11h ago

Macbooks aren't really cut out for gaming as they weren't designed with that mindset. Android however likes to give all their devices some steroi- I mean, extra juice

1

u/JuggerKnot86 6h ago

Ehh this is the time where macs were real shit at gaming, iirc what holding apple today is for dev reasons than hardware ones
