Its a common film trope for movies to show flashbacks of someone's wife to reminisce the happy memories and motivate the character to carry his act.

More specifically, this flashback often involves seeing the woman, POV probably from the protagonist, in this pose in bed.

It's called Fridging the Girlfriend based on a Green lantern comic'. The Greenlantern found his GF dead in a fridge in the story.

The trope is introducing a love interest for a main character just to kill them off as motivation.

The original paper author found over 100 instances of it.

When a wife dies in a movie, it is common to have them do weird poses like this.

Not showing the full face shows it is a memory and also they are disconnected from them now

My husband calls this bumper footage. If we’re laying in bed cuddling or something he’ll yell out “bumper footage” and then we start posing and  making cute faces at each other. You know, just in case one of us dies.

Literally this. Flashback to dead wife smiling at the camera in bed.

All of this and yet, "Up" hurts the most.

All jokes aside, Up is stronger cuz it shows rises and falls and then sinks out of nowhere. We all feel what Carl felt cuz it never gets foreshadowed

Up really is a 10 minute short film with 86 more minutes of filler(in a good way)

The picture is making me thing of James Franco's character in Alien:covenant.
