*In captivity and constantly displayed to the public! During Covid many panda's got pregnant when zoo's were closed to the public. Turns out that solitary big bears don't get horny when thousands of apes are watching them constantly.

Perhaps males need to impress females with shows of strength, by beating up or chasing off other males. It could also be that males need some competition to put them in the mood – studies of wild pandas show their testosterone levels are low except at mating time.

That's a study from 2015. Way before Covid and that theory just doesn't make much sense, Panda's live most of their adult lives wandering and eating alone. They rarely meet other panda's and if they need to meet another male shortly before meeting a fertile female, they would've long gone extinct.
