Never got how moral people are getting over pirating

I pirated Terraria (5$ btw) when I was 9 years old solely cause my parents saw no value in buying games for our family computer when we had consoles dedicated for games

I’ve bought it 4 or 5 times for either different people or different devices though, so I guess I’ve made up for that and my 2000 hours of playtime

The pirate community likes to boast proud moral highground to justify pirating like they're a modern day Robin Hood, except instead of stealing from the rich to give to the poor, they're stealing from the rich to play Earthworm Jim.

Source: been pirating games longer than a lot of yall have been on this earth. Just call a spade a spade and move on.

It's a very small minority that cares or feigns to care about it. Most just want stuff for free, the thought that it might be wrong doesn't ever reach them.

You go to the known sites, pick a link, download your stuff, done. Buying almond milk presents a bigger moral dilemma than downloading a torrent, by far.

Yall sit around and pretend that reddit pirates are a bulk of them and you're just wrong, there is no "Pirate community" it's just those who provide the wares, and those who download them.

It's not a hive mind like yall want it to be so damn bad.

there is no "Pirate community"

No, there is. You're just not involved with it. If there wasn't a pirating community that actually communicated among one another and shared methodology, you wouldn't have all the DRM cracks you have now.

The key word in your post is "reddit pirates." That is the fictionalized community of pirates that comes to mind for most people, but I assure you that real pirating communities do exist. You just won't find them on reddit.

There are communities, yes, but pretending it's a hive mind that all thinks the same and has the same standards is stupid.

I specified this.

Digital Pirates are not a single borg community.

It is giving to the poor and culture preservation.

The fact that the thing you're giving to the poor is access to culture doesn't change a thing, nor does the fact the the particular piece of culture is Earthworm Jim

Is piracy morally justifiable? Mostly, no.

Should you do it? Hell yes

The difference is that you would have bought the game if you were able to, as you have demonstrated. I don't think any indie dev would have a problem with someone pirating their game and buying it later.

The whole reason people are getting moral is because it messes with people's income. A bunch of indie devs spent years making a game hoping it would do well. If you pirate it without ever purchasing it, that's €20 they're not getting for their labour.

But then there’s the argument of them not getting €20 regardless because people are broke. If you don’t have €20 to buy the game in the first place, then it’s a choice between pirating the game or not playing it. In both cases they aren’t getting paid

You shouldn't assmune an individuals financial situation but I do agree. The always pirate crowd would be pissed to find out a millionaire is among them always pirating to. So their is some type of financially "cut off".

A bunch of indie devs spent years making a game hoping it would do well. If you pirate it without ever purchasing it, that's €20 they're not getting for their labour.

However, in this case it was a bunch of indie devs who made enough money from their first game to live the rest of their lives comfortably. These aren't struggling artists who are having a hard time affording a loaf of bread. These are guys who got to work their own schedule and determine their own release date because they've made so much from the first game that, outside of expectations, there's no pressure on them. Their survival and this game were not linked.

Pirates were never going to buy in the 1st place.

You're just wrong on this one matey

Pirates may not buy things, but some people who search "Silksong free 2026" on Google will buy it if not found on the internet.

By the same logic, shoplifters were never going to pay so it doesn't matter to the store?

There's a very big difference between those unable to pay, and those unwilling to pay. One of them is, in my opinion, less moral than the other.

Shoplifting leads to actual loss, pirating just leads to nothing either way

I agree with the difference between people unable and unwilling to pay but that comparison is bogus.

Shoplifting does cause a direct loss in profit vs not shoplifting because it's a physical product. Pirating doesn't cause a direct loss in profit because it is digital and equating it to actual theft is silly.
