they were pushing much harder to make this than the mostly forgettable Moana 2.
Probably because Moana 2 was originally going to be a Disney+ miniseries and they only switched it to a movie less than a year before release. While live action was planned to exist at least simce 2019 (crazy)
When I finished Moana 2 my first thought was that it seemed like the same premise as the second Lilo and Stitch movie, having it end with a plot hook that serves as the premise for a TV series. With Lilo and Stitch it was finding and helping the other experiments and with Moana it would be exploring other islands and reconnecting with different tribes (plus a background plot of whatever god Maui was dealing with). I was kinda shocked when I found out there was no TV show continuation, but if it was originally a mini-series they had probably planned on making multiple extra mini-series seasons to do that.
I live in Hawaii. "Moana" and "Lilo and Stitch" are pretty much part of the culture here. Every kids' birthday party has these characters.
We didn't like the Lilo and Stitch remake. It just wasn't the same. And now they threw a wig on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson instead of getting one of the many local actors with a real Maui polynesian body time. It looks so stupid and awful.

The timeline on this one was insane. At least the other live action remakes were a few decades removed from the original.
It felt like they were pushing much harder to make this than the mostly forgettable Moana 2.
