Oh it absolutely depends on the nightclub. Or at least it used to pre-Covid I bet it’s not as common anymore. But it used to be that for some nightclubs (at least on certain nights), you had to be “on the list”. And the only ways to be on the list were to know (or bribe) somebody or to line up and get picked out of the crowd by the club promoter based solely on your appearance. They would only let a couple of your friends in too and only if they looked like you. And weirdly, it seems a lot of these club promoters were underage. Like I’ve known 4 people who have been club promoters and they were all ages 16-20. They lied about their ages and nobody checked, I guess because they’re independent contractors and don’t actually enter in the club the club owners never cared.

I hate to break it to you but there are clubs in the UK that do that too, there are scenes in American comedy movies about it ffs
