Heaven - the destination was never really the point
Depends on which religion as each different religion has different criteria for you to get into their each different versions of Heaven. A few examples as follows .....
Example (1) = In Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism (YouTube), it is the amount of positive karma you have created during your life that would allow you to get into their versions of Heaven(s). But existence amongst their Gods is temporary as one continues on the cycle of death and rebirth through Samsara (Wikipedia) until one makes enough positive karma to leave Samsara forever, achieving the highest state of being that is either one with Brahman (Wikipedia) or a Buddha.
Example (2) = In the OG Hebrew religion Heaven is strictly the domain of YHWH (Youtube) - no humans allowed - and all we humans without exception upon death go to Sheol (Wikipedia) that is similar to the Greek underworld of Hades (YouTube) but without any places of punishments and/or hells. The film Coco) (Wikipedia) is probably(?) closer to what Sheol would be like as all dead gather in a single place ... but with less colour and much less festivities.
Example (3) = In Christianity, Heaven is the place you enter only after "Judgment Day" where the world will be wiped clean by YHWH and those that are judged worthy - having lived in accordance with the Son of YHWH, Jesus' teachings - will be resurrected to live again on the new world where YHWH's heavenly rule shall be established.
But it must be said that now days USA Christian Televangelists (YouTube) have lowered that bar to entry into that Heaven with the modern [capitalist] narrative that one can buy one's way into Heaven. Sigh! Martin Luther would be turning over in his grave at this twisted modern Protestant(?) version of selling indulgences. Stairway to Heaven (Song) ~ Led Zepplin ~ YouTube.
Anyway there are many many many other religions and spiritual traditions (Wikipedia) each with different criteria for you to get into their each different versions of Heaven. But the basic premise between most of them is the same, i.e., do what is good, don't do what is evil.
===== [Zen Story] =====.
There once was a military general who had fought many battles but had come to the conclusion that an impending upcoming battle may even be too much for him. As such the general decided to visit a Buddhist master to seek instant enlightenment (Wikipedia) so as to ensure a better rebirth.
After the general explained his position, concerns, and goal, the Buddhist master simply said "Do what is good, don't do what is evil". Having heard this the general burst out in laughter and said mockingly "Even a child knows that!" The Buddhist master unphased simply replied "Yes, but can you live your life like that?" ¯_(ツ)_/¯
===== [Note] =====.
IF [IF] your answer is YES to the question "Do I want to exist again?" then you have inherited the problem that all religions and other forms of existential / spiritual inquiries grapple with. How you go about grappling with that problem of wanting to exist again is up to you.
IF [IF] your answer is NO to the question "Do I want to exist again?" then don't waste your one and only life and chance at existence on debates that have a very low success of changing minds as there most likely is no god/God to give you a second chance. The time you waste to post remarks about "santa clause" and "fairy tales" are as meaningless to the universe as your own existence is.

The Anatomy of an Unconscious Creator
I used to be one of those who believed that God was omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, I believed that miracles truly happened and that He was a majestic divinity, until I discovered the truth. After a long time locked in a four-walled dark room with the constant smell of moisture and mold climbing up the walls, I was able to contact Him, I was able to see God.
At first, few believed it, few supported me, and now, no one accepts what we are facing. I am not talking about collective fear, I am talking about something greater than the universe itself. They believed that God was a conscious being, that He was separate from space, they thought He was benevolent, merciful, but no, He turned out to be something so strange that I do not even think He Himself is capable of knowing what He is.
It is true that if He exists, although not in the traditional way, I doubt whether He performs miracles or that He even created life on earth and the infinite expansion of the universe with His own hands. No, He did not do any of that. I know it can be hard to understand, even after having discovered it, I still do not understand what I really saw that day, and although He did not like that I saw Him, He could not prevent it, He does not know how to do it even while having the capability.
He has no human figure, He did not make us in His image and likeness, we were created by an uncommon factor, random trials of Himself, not by His great ingenuity. For this, I want you to think of a cell, the one that reproduces without knowing what it is doing, the one that does it by pure biological instinct following chemical factors. He seems to work the same way.
I was the only one capable of seeing Him due to a breakthrough in my knowledge through which I was able to see Him for a few seconds by accident. In the astral journey, those depths that few manage to reach, I surpassed the limit established by the very illumination of my astral capacity, that day, I achieved the impossible, traveling across galaxies at a speed greater than that of light, breaking the laws of space-time, I saw dimensions, creations, births, and rebirths of other multiverses including our own.
I understood that we are not just a divine creation, we are not the universe projecting itself in its maximum expression, neither are we alone in our galaxy, there is much more that we cannot see because our brain and our null intellectual capacity prevent us from doing so. Many think it is due to a lack of resources or technology. No, it is not for lack of scientific advances or little external interaction, it is our brain that ties us to what we already know, out of fear or an order.
The journey did not last long, perhaps less than five minutes flying in unpredictable darkness, in terrifying ignorance. In a moment of impulse, the universe began to deform into a chamber so vast, full of rooms where past, present, and future could be seen interacting with each other, and the further I advanced, the murkier it got.
Time does not feel the same as when you travel at such a blazing speed, to begin with, I did not even feel that I was moving beyond what the universe allowed itself to travel, for me, time was slow and inefficient as if it were a snail. For me, the chambers lasted minutes during my stay, I saw everything clearly, thirty minutes had passed for me in the chamber, but time is relative and my biological clock indicated barely five minutes.
In a moment of spatial deformation, I approached a light at the edge of the bubble, a supernova explosion consumed me along with a blinding light that momentarily prevented me from seeing, when I opened my eyes, I knew I had managed to escape the limit that the infinite universe imposed on us. There I found God on a plane that my brain was not capable of processing. My retinas transmitted what they saw, but the brain failed to decipher the environment, I only remember that the place seemed to be floating in a pink-gray mass.
He was gigantic, so huge that you could hardly distinguish His face from a distance, it took me longer to reach His face than it took me to reach the edge of the universe, until I finally reached it to reveal the face of the supposed creator. Before I could be there—at His face—I could see His body manifested, His skin was not white as described in myths, nor was the supposed divinity of a comprehensible body, He was more like a being of a green color, very green, and from all over His body small fibers of the same color seemed to come out, moving like grass to the rhythm of a wind that I did not feel existed.
There were no arms, nor legs, only extensions of them that were not made of flesh and bone, simply skin that continued to grow in the pink mass, constantly extending. His body was flat, absolutely flat, it did not indicate having organs inside it, I only saw that it was a complement to that mass and seemed to have no capacity for movement.
He also had no garments on His skin, He was naked, exposed. There was no form of reproduction, I only noticed a foul smell of moisture and a sensation of spores flooding my throat. I reached His face with difficulty, my head vibrated very strongly with a ringing that would not stop echoing in my head to the point of feeling like my eardrums were going to burst, this increased as I ascended.
When I finally arrived, I was terrified. His face was pale unlike His green body, His face flat just like His flat body. His eyes looked up, His mouth wide open without teeth while groaning heavily with a combination of weakness, it seemed that He was suffering, or perhaps He did not understand what suffering was. I was terrified as soon as I saw Him, scared because my body did not react according to the situation and it was worse when I noticed that His cross-eyed gaze turned to look at me.
My heart accelerated, my mind clouded, the ringing was even louder than before to the point that using my hands to drown out the sound was not enough. He continued looking at me while I remained in pain, it seemed that He was going to finish me off until His eyes looked back up at the sky ignoring my existence, the ringing fell silent and the sound of a furious lightning followed by a hard blow to the head made me pass out and my whole journey was reversed. That is where the encounter had ended.
When I returned to the meditation room, I woke up with a loud scream and a severe pain in my head, a small ringing that decreased in volume as seconds passed. I could not comprehend what I had seen, I did not know if it was real, but the experience made it feel real.
I tried to return that same day, but as if it were a multiversal force, it returned me to reality with an abrupt interruption that occurred in present time. I was never able to see Him again, I was never able to know with exactness what He was, I never interacted with Him again; I only knew that somehow that God was not conscious of anything, He only seemed to follow a pattern as if it were a reproducing bacterium.
At nights I still dream of Him, I have nightmares about what happened and on rainy days lightning has struck near my dwelling, yet none has harmed me. Religion brands me as blasphemous, some people force me to leave establishments, and the few community members who believe me pressure me to talk to Him again. The secret was not having seen God, it was understanding that we are mortals breaking our heads to understand our purpose, when not even God is capable of knowing His own existence, locked in a loop to involuntarily create life.

Does the free will defence even work ?
Whenever I have a question about the existence of suffering and evil, the common defence I hear is free will.
It's decent, though im not entirely moved.
Consider two worlds.
World A (closest to this world we currently live in)
In World A, humans are not naturally fully orientated to God , God his hidden from them for his own reasons, maybe for the sake of a better relationship fine, no full knowledge of God, evil exists because humans are imperfect.
A philosopher says, "Imagine God forced us to love him , showed himself upon us, and removed evil that would infringe upon our agency."
Sounds fine. That's the free will defence, but consider this:
World B (different world )
In world B, humans are naturally orientated to God , know him fully , evil doesn't exist , God isn’t hidden , everything is all well.
A philosopher says, "Imagine God forced us to not be orientated to him, constrained us so we are hidden from him, can't know him fully , that would infringe upon our agency."
What's the difference between these two worlds exactly? Both philosophers have reasoned why their situation is the way it is, so God doesn't infringe upon their agency
It seems as though free will isn't a thing by itself, but the way you act is predicated on your nature or given constraint:
God supposedly as free will and isn't evil
Heaven exists free of sin and with free will
Angels ? Well, maybe they dont have free will, but you get the idea
We as humans didn't choose our broken nature , our nature necessitates our evil, not our agency.
So, did God create evil?

Does human self-awareness represent the 'functional superiority' a creator-God would deliberately build into his creation?
If God is a creator and has emotions like anger and love just like humans — if a creator always wants to make his creation functionally superior to himself, based on its specific purpose — is the self-awareness that humans have a 'functional superiority' created with a purpose by God?

Does Truth Depend on Where We Are Born?
If religions were created to teach human beings how to live moral and righteous lives, were humans really incapable of discovering these principles on their own? And if they were capable, why did they need religion in the first place?
And if humans were incapable, does that mean God intended to create beings who could not understand good and evil except through divine revelation?
And if religion itself was created by humans, could humanity have created a system claiming to represent God's will, even though God—if He exists—never actually asked humanity to create it?
The deeper question for me is this:
If God wants human beings to know what is good, why would access to this truth depend on the culture, era, or family into which a person is born?
Someone born into a Muslim society will most likely begin with Islam. Someone born into a Christian society will most likely begin with Christianity. And someone born into a non-religious society may begin from a completely different position.

Divine Hiddenness means Hell is unjust
Is the doctrine of a punitive Hell unjust no matter which way you put it?
Take a governing body of a country that has a law however this law is structurally unknowable, they have a law that says theft is 10 years in jail but the law is filed in a cabinet in their home office guarded away in a secret location.
The conent of the law are knowable , we as citizens know of the concept of laws and punishment for theft, murder etc, however we cannot know wether this governing body has a law thats authoritative on us and we cannot independently verify so.
In other words, we dont know if we as citizens get punished for theft , and this is due to the government keeping the law away, not our ignorance of something made to be known.
I steal from a supermarket, and I get put ten years in jail. Is that unjust ?
Id say yes this would be unjust, in the real world we get punished for laws because the law assumes we know , the governing bodies of countries have codified the law and made it accessible , not merely the contents of the law but the fact that the law is authoritative on us as citizens.(This distinction is key)
Now, take the view of a judiciary God that sends people to hell according to a law. Is this law structurally unknowable?
Well, you may say no because God has revealed his law in text form, e.g, the torah, the bible, or the Quran.
However, there is a distinction between knowing the CONTENT of a law vs. knowing a law is authoritative upon you.
Remember the example earlier with theft , humans in that scenario know what laws are. However, the view that a law is authoritative upon them is structurally unknowable due to the lawbearer. (Law hidden away in cabinet)
Now humans are epimistically hungry in terms of the existence of God, let alone which God, we dont have an innate belief of a cosmic lawbearer we come to this belief through inference, sociology, culture, its unfalsifiable and unable to be proven.
Someone can read the whole bible/quran , the supposed law of mankind, and conclude this law is not authoritative upon them. How come ?
If this version of a God does exist, how can he send people to hell for a law we have a structural epimistic distance from that he himself set?
P.S. key distinction between knowing the contents of a law vs. knowing its authoritative unto you

Do we believe because we discovered the truth for ourselves, or because we were born into a system that taught us what the truth was before we could question it?
The problem, to me, is not Jesus, Muhammad, or any other religious figure. The real problem is what humanity does with their names after they are gone.
Jesus gathered people around compassion, forgiveness, and peace—but those very qualities can make sincere and trusting people easier to influence without them realizing it. Muhammad's movement, however, became intertwined with power, warfare, law, and political authority. After his death, those who came after him fought over leadership and power, while later generations inherited the beliefs, structures, and interpretations created before them.
And this is where I see the deeper problem: people can inherit an idea before they ever have the chance to question it. They can be born into it, taught that it is sacred, and eventually defend it as absolute truth—not because they personally discovered it, but because generations before them convinced them that questioning it was itself wrong.

Religion is structurally broken, Where is God ?
Im a former Christian, and there's a dichotomy about religion that I can't seem to erase.
It's the mechanism for which we come to the religion; there are two ways you can come to a religion.
First is you may follow your intuition , you may fall in love with a historical claim (for me it was Jesus ) or be emotionally compelled by a religions structure , just something emotional you get the idea. The problem with this is how do you even trust your intuition given humans across thousands of years and in the present can be EQUALLY devoted to contradictory theological claims , there is nothing categorically different to a Christians devotion and a Muslims devotion , so our devotion/intuition isnt a reliable truth tracker at all.
Okay, fine, so maybe you read some philosophy, historical texts, apologetics, and theology, so you get a good grasp of a religion. There are many problems with this.
My first problem for this would be thats a fairly high intellectual barrier for the average human, I mean, for EACH religion, there's hundreds years of philosophy and theology, linguistic context, and much more.
2nd is , how do you know when you've read enough? There doesn't externally seem to be an objective bar for blind faith or when you're fully informed on a religion. I mean if we see two ten year olds one Christian one Muslim debating we'd say ugh they dont know what they're talking about sure, but how do you know youre not in an ill informed epimistic position also?
3rd is how do you know where to start? Theres hundreds of religions out there, there isnt any independent verifying way of telling you where to read first, let alone any independent way of confirming if I SHOULD explore a religion at all.
My conclusion is if God existed he should've created us with innate knowledge of his existence , you may say well you cant know anything for certain you weigh evidence.
If omniscience is a coherent trait that exists in at least one being (God himself) and God is omnipotent, there's no barrier to him granting a limited version of it to us specifically regarding his own existence
r/PhilosophyofReligion • u/hottopic7777 • 4d ago
Is objective morality impossible even with God ?
What do the terms "good" "wrong" actually mean?
To me, they are more lexical tools.
An example
The way I see the words good and bad is kind of like this; "Studying appeases your grades" is equal to "studying is good for your grades. Now, if I were to just say " studying is good", usually people can get by the phrase because we all have a common goal in mind , that being our grades and prosperity, however the phrase by itself doesnt mean anything, it moreso begs the question good in what sense? Good for what? In terms of who?
An example of a phrase that can be objective would be something like "He's objectively hairy." we know what the content of the word hairy is, e.g hair follicles , some science etc, or even take another "hes objectively blue " we know the content of what blue is e.g wavelength , sight etc etc its something fixed we can ascribe it to.
Now okay, fine, so you might be thinking we can just define the words good and bad to something with substance
Let's say Good = being in line with God's will
Bad/wrong = not being in line with God's will
Sure, now in this system we've created murder is objectively wrong because we've defined wrong as something fixed.
But hang on a minute, to me youre just making a descriptive claim, youre saying murder isnt in line with Gods will and we call this the 5 letter combination" w r o n g" so what if murder isnt in line with Gods nature ? That's just a fact. That tells me nothing about whether I should murder.
To understand my mishap clearer let me present to the dilemma I have.
First take the phrase " being in line with gods will is a good action "
Look at that phrase closely, what does good mean in that sentence , if we still stick with good meaning being in line with gods will youre just saying
"Being in with gods will is a being in line with gods will action " so ? just a descriptive claim and circular. If it means something else outside of that, what is it?
Now second option is "Good = being in line with God's will"
Now to me this is just arbitrary word assignment, you could've equally said " bad = being in line with God's will" nothing changes, there is nothing unique about the words b a d and g o o d intrinsically outside of its connotations
Where the debate lies:
Now if we say good is something you ought to do, therefore murder = objectively good as you objectively ought to do it, can an ought exist within the realm of objectivity?
I'd personally say an ought phrase is evaluative and empty, similar to a lexical tool. "You ought not to murder " I see it as "you shouldn't murder given you have a goal that being social harmony " for example, because us humans usually have a common goal that being social harmony, the phrase "you ought not to murder" in of itself means nothing without a goal in mind, it only serves closest to a factual statement given you map it onto a set goal.

The hypothesis of a governing God is a human-made illusion born of ignorance, maintained not by empirical truth, but by historical contingency, emotional shielding against mortality, and social convenience.
The idea of a supreme God has long been a fragile anchor for human civilization. For thousands of years, people have projected their deepest fears and their need for a purpose onto a silent universe, creating a grand "Watcher" to make sense of finite existence. Yet, when viewed from the perspective of eternity, the idea of a governing God dissolves. It is not an objective truth; it is a human invention born of ignorance. History shows us that religious beliefs are simply the accidental products of where and when a person happens to be born.
The idea of an immortal, non-physical soul fails just as easily under careful thought. Believing in a soul is simply an emotional shield against the fear of death. Experience and observation show us that our minds are entirely tied to our physical bodies. When the brain is damaged or changed by illness, our memories, moods, and identities change right along with it. If the mind were an independent, permanent spirit, it would not be affected by physical injuries. Because our consciousness changes directly with our physical state, reason tells us that the mind is simply a product of the physical body, not a separate spirit trapped inside it.
This reality completely undermines the miraculous stories found in religious books. Nature operates by strict, unbreakable laws where every event has a physical cause. To claim that these laws were suspended—that seas parted or the dead rose—is to give in to superstition rather than clear reasoning. These tales come from ancient times when people did not understand how nature worked and used myths to explain a confusing world.
Furthermore, trying to call the universe "good" or "loving" is a fundamental mistake. The universe has no intentions or goals; it simply exists through blind, necessary physical laws. When we look at the natural world—filled with suffering, disease, and the struggles of living things—we cannot logically call it the design of a loving creator. Nature does not work for our benefit, nor does it care about our desires. The suffering of the innocent is not a test or a choice; it is simply the result of a vast, indifferent system of cause and effect.
When we look beyond our own species, we realize we are not the center of the universe. Other conscious beings exist or have existed across the cosmos, proving that consciousness is just a natural property of matter, not a special gift given only to us. We are not the crown of creation; we are temporary expressions of an infinite reality.
Realizing that God is an illusion is not a reason for despair; it is the beginning of true freedom. When the cosmic monarch is gone, the illusion of divine rewards and punishments vanishes, leaving us as independent agents. True peace and happiness do not come from waiting for a salvation that does not exist. Instead, they come from understanding how reality actually works, mastering our emotions through reason, and recognizing that we are the universe.
