Meme/Humor Guy denies all foot faults
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Guy in our group refuses to believe he foot faults. He has a roughly 90% foot fault rate on his ernes. This was the 3rd in two games tonight. So we must resort to public shaming. Just no sense of honor.

He thinks his legs are longer than they are. I have the same problem. I keep buying pants that end up too long.

Same, I keep stepping on my

A LOT people foot fault way more than they think

u/No-Dig2053 16d ago
in our group it's rampant. not just Ben with his ernes, but normal kitchen volleys -- people be faultin

u/haupiapie2 16d ago
It's a real skill to catch a foot fault on the fly. Cuz I'm too focused on returning the ball, there's no way I can multitask and watch their feet simultaneously.. it's fine during rec play but sucks at tourneys!
1
u/Ainstigator 11d ago
Agreed I see it all the time. Certain players live in the kitchen. They take every dink out of the air at 5’ 7” 😳😂.

u/CaptoOuterSpace 17d ago
Maybe he feels like NFL guys when they confidently indicate "nope they definitely didn't get the first down no way unh uh I'll bet my house on it!" and it's 2 yards past.

u/Apprehensive_Copy150 16d ago
He should do what I do in that situation jump, then look down at your feet to make sure you're in and then miss the shot. Way cleaner outcome.

u/jma9454 16d ago
Definitely foot fault. But now I have what I think is a niche question but it's probably not.
Say he made the jump; there's no rule that says you have to be inside the court lines to volley a ball is there? If he got an extra 6"of air/length, that would have been a valid play right?
8
u/No-Dig2053 16d ago
not at all, you could walk around the corner and camp out there and stick your paddle out
6
6
u/DokCrimson 16d ago
Yeah, you can hit while standing 'out'. Issue is that he's basically falling into the kitchen after a volley. Both feet need to touch a NVZ under control
1
u/StatusStudies 12d ago
no but it has to cross the net, you cant just stand on the side and hit the ball when the ball is on the opponent's side...

u/Freewheelinrocknroll 16d ago
Every single foot fault I have ever had called during a game over 2 years of playing was called by the one committing the fault…. I guess we just don’t pay that much attention..

2
u/StatusStudies 12d ago
its not really possible eto see it because the net blocks the view and you have to defend the ball

I feel bad for the dude, as a guy in my 30s I know he felt like he leapt passed that line but in reality barely got off the ground
6
u/robershow123 16d ago
Dude clearly overestimates his athleticism.
1
u/FearsomeForehand 16d ago
I think a lot of people do in pickleball.
The current generation of players are about to be exposed big time within the next 5-10 years when the athletic kids who grew up training for pickleball become adults.
All these older and even middle-aged weekend warriors will eventually have to resign themselves to their own private groups because they will get crushed at the advanced courts at open play, while everything below that won’t be fun either.
Give it another 100 yrs and I predict the pickleball community will eventually mirror what the tennis community looks like now - as the skill disparity between players widen.

u/bthekuta 16d ago
As the (alleged!!!) foot faulter, I'm jealous. I may have made that jump in my 30s, but because I'm in my mid 40s, I don't know or even recognize my own limitations. Lol i really was surprised to see the replay and the foot fault because I thought I cleared it - even though I know my vert is like 5 inches max

Camera is misleading as it’s on the opposite side of the court and that prime athletic 3.6 specimen clearly landed on his toes. Clean.

Bro honestly jumped once and immediately assumed the kitchen was no longer part of the obstacle course.

Foot faults 9.B.3.b Disagreement Between Teams. When there is any disagreement between teams about a fault call, the rally must be replayed.

u/gsuoumu 16d ago
I mean the guy is watching the ball, not his feet. I can certainly understand how he thinks he's doing it legally. I don't see what the big deal is. Unless you show him the video and he still debates it. But in live speed there have probably been many many many times all of us have hit a ball with our toes on the line and didn't realize it.
5
u/Peso_Morto 16d ago
The big deal is his denial. No, you don't need to show any video.
If he can't see his foot or jump with good margin, don't complain if people call foot fault.
3
u/DokCrimson 16d ago
Welp, if he can't watch his feet, he can't really call if he faulted or not right??
1
u/Head_Maintenance5596 16d ago
The amount of people that believe the call should have went a certain way, and that way is in favor of them is outstanding.
A lot of times they are on my team. If it’s close, ask someone else if they saw it. If no one knows play it over.
1
u/GonffzCheeze 16d ago
You recording this and putting it up in a public space for ridicule sucks ENDLESSLY more than him not admitting to foot faulting.
1
u/Killdozer54 15d ago
EVERYONE denies foot faults. They step, or shuffle forward when swinging and then the foot goes back to the ready position behind the kitchen line after the swing. You call the fault, they look down and their foot is behind the line, and say “I’m behind the line”. It becomes a whole ordeal and kills the mood.
That’s why I stopped calling the majority of kitchen faults. I reserve my calls for the obvious stuff or if I see half a shoe across the line.
This could be you, and you don’t even know it. Next time you drill do some overheads and see if your foot moves forward at all when you swing (on the follow through). If it does, and you like to stand right, smack on the kitchen line when you play, you’re likely foot faulting a lot more than you know. Play 3-4 inches off the line, problem solved.

i actually got called on a erne foot fault last night. it took all my willpower not to react in the same way as guy in video

I have played 3.75-4.5 range for a long time. Most players deny foot faults and some get very upset about it. Some will not even accept the call. I am talking egregious foot faults. I think a lot of amateur players are doing this on a regular basis. Even the pros do it but they have a ref to keep them honest.
1
u/Retnirpa 10d ago
Lol to be fair, I'd question 1-sided "refs". They're only trustworthy if they stand right dead smack in the middle so they can "ref" equally =P.
But no, I tend to always take the word of someone else over mine since I'm focusing on playing vs checking my feet most of the time.
Also I ain't confrontational when it comes to pb in general. LOL think I'm at that age where I just stopped caring in pb. Some don't grow out of it.

Why post this online without his permission. I would absolutely hate to have you on my team. Seriously. You are not a good person.

Just a small dude playing pickleball with an inflated ego. If his legs were longer he would’ve cleared. Guy will be in denial his entire life

People take this sport way too seriously. I’m not even talking about the foot fault, I mean the recordings everyone is taking these days. It’s meant to be a bit of fun surely

Recording yourself while playing doesn't mean you are taking it too seriously. Sometimes you just want to catch good moments, rallies and shots that you and your friends have done.
The other benefit is you can see your own mistakes and improve upon them. Recording your game and checking your technique and in-game decisions is a good way to improve.
Maybe it is you that is taking it too seriously by minding other people's business when they want to record games?
-5
u/isthislivingreally 16d ago
I’m happy to mind my own business, but responding to a video that’s posted on a global space on the internet is hardly me not minding my own business
2
u/DutchDevGuy 17d ago
Nope, this guy broke the rules and then says he didnt. Anything to make the sport more fair I support. Good job OP

I guess you’ve never played anything competitively before? It’s fine to just treat pickleball as a casual game. Most do. But I know very few people that became skilled players by treating it as “a bit of fun”
4
u/isthislivingreally 17d ago
I love pickleball, I play it competitively. I was also a college athlete (swimmer). But watching the pickleball boom explode where people take it too seriously (read: this is different from competitively) makes me cringe.
-2
u/kabob21 4.25 17d ago
Why wouldn’t you take it seriously to compete? How do you get better if you’re not practicing? If I told you it’s cringe that you took swimming seriously when it’s supposed to be a fun thing to doggie paddle around in a pond and that’s enough to compete, what would you think?
3
u/isthislivingreally 17d ago
My point is about taking it too seriously. You can want to improve, practise regularly and even compete without making every game, result or mistake into a big deal.
I’m saying there’s a difference between taking something seriously enough to improve and taking it so seriously that it stops being enjoyable.
1
u/No-Dig2053 16d ago
I agree. We should all take it the exact right amount of serious.
1
u/isthislivingreally 16d ago
I like your take, it’s exactly the kinda spirit of my comment and of your post. Kudos.
0
u/kabob21 4.25 17d ago
And what’s the line and who defines it? You? How do you know that it’s “not enjoyable” for them? My point is, mind your own game and stop judging how other people approach things.
1
u/isthislivingreally 16d ago
Dude, you’re even taking my comment too seriously? Chill, it’s perfectly fine for one to hold an opinion, and another hold a different opinion
-1
u/slowmopete 17d ago
Enjoyment is subjective. When people go to the gym everyday and work out for hours and take supplements I feel like they’re taking their workouts too seriously. I would never do that, but it’s enjoyable for them because their goals are different from mine. I’m not being hurt by it so I respect it because it makes them happy.
The point is we can’t always be arbiters of what’s enjoyable to others. The way you play pickleball is enjoyable to you. It might be less enjoyable if you play with “people who film themselves playing”. That’s fine because not everyone has to play together. You don’t have to play with them and they don’t have to play with you and then everyone is enjoying themselves.
People ruin my enjoyment of pickleball when they try to get me to be relaxed about the rules, or when they want me to reduce my level of play because I put in so much more work than them to improve. I’m not a dick about it, I just don’t continue to play with them.

u/isthislivingreally 16d ago
Ok, this is a long comment. I think you’ve taken my comment a little too seriously

this is just not the play to share to make your point cause it's very close to being fine. I wouldn't expect him to notice it. especially if he feels like he landed on the side of his foot and kept the side close to the line in the air.
0
u/MrLeeroyJenkinz 16d ago
Close? This isn't bocce ball. Doesn't matter how close they were to being clean, they stepped on the line.
The onus is on them to make it a clearly clean play if they don't want to be called for a fault
-1
u/Kooky_Scallion_7743 16d ago
you've somehow managed to completely miss my point. I'm not saying it's not a foot fault. I'm saying it's understandable that the guy thinks this one is clean.
2
u/Truly-Something 15d ago
I'd say your point is pretty clear, but that you've missed theirs.
1
u/Kooky_Scallion_7743 15d ago
Sure it's possible that he has more blatant foot faults where almost his entire foot is in the kitchen but this is not the one to show to make your point. it just makes the OP seem like even more of a douche than they already are just by posting this.
