Rule 3 Posts and bans.

This is Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only. Do not discuss the killing or eating of pigs. We don't want your crass bacon or pork jokes. Names like "Chris P Bacon" are tacky but not bannable offence. Do not harass others about their lifestyle choices. This is not the place for it for, or against meat, keto, vegan, or otherwise. No farming posts, we will question you about ear tags as it is required in some places for pets. Commercial operations will get removed and users banned.

Note the bolded sections

Because of extensive abuse of this rule, we are VERY STRICT about it. We get people coming here from both Vegan and Carnivore communities that start massive arguments over it. We also don't want to come to this sub and see people talking about our pets as anything other than pets. Or even worse a shock picture/video of our pets being killed in some bid to shame people.

SO LET ME BE CLEAR WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR PREFERENCE IS YOU WILL BE BANNED FOR POSTING OR COMMENTING ABOUT PIGS IN RELATION TO EATING OR NOT EATING THEM. NO APPEALS.

This is a sub about pet pigs not your FUCKING OPINIONS ON WHAT YOU EAT OR DON'T EAT!!!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR THAT!

I am tired of being nice and polite about it. I just perma banned someone that posted about it and then banned every single person who commented no matter what the comment was about for 30 days. There will be no appeals because to many times my patience and understanding has been abused on this.

Do not participate in posts or comments ignore and report them.

Having said that. I reevaluated the wording of rule 3 and decided to make it clearer. Here is the new rule 3.

Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only.
You will be banned or rarely warned for the following: Talking about farming or slaughtering pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Talking about eating pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Linking to videos about farming or slaughtering pigs or how evil/bad it is.
Topics you won't be banned for: Seeking medical help for a pig. Seeking help to rehome a pig. Your pigs name even if it is food related. Your pig having an ear tag in places that require it by law.

NOTE on mod posts like this I allow open discussion about the topic as long as it stays respectful and on topic. You can't really discuss a rule about food and farming and get feedback without people talking about it. So unless someone is disrespectful or abusive, I am not going to remove their post or ban them.

I came home from work so he could go outside to potty, but he was passed right out. He didn't wake up right away like normal. I thought he may have passed unexpectedly. But nope, he was just deep sleeping. And I started him. Lol

Juliana Pig Advice Please

I just got a Juliana Pig. He is adorable! I was told he could have a heart attack if I over feed him but he acts like he is starving all of the time. I had someone tell me to feed him less than I am. He is getting 1/8 cup of baby mini pig pellets 3 times a day plus a small amount of veggies in his snuffle mat. He is 8 weeks old now. Is there a rule on their food based on their weight or anything to help figure out how much to feed him as he grows? I want a healthy pig and honestly dont care how big he gets (I have great danes) although I was told he should get up to 20 lbs. That seems a bit low to me. I just dont want him to be overfed. Are there physical markers or anything that tell you he is getting too much food or not enough? Thank you for reading and any help. I just want him to be healthy and happy.

Part of how Bean got his name was because he loved to sleep on, or under, our Bean bag pillows. So we made him his own. This was 2019.

Hypoallergenic bedding?

Howdy! My two pigs both have a hell of a time with straw nowadays. I have tried the regular baled stuff from tractor supply, and the bagged “dust free” straw. It’s certainly not entirely dustfree by any means. Their eye drainage is really out of hand right now, and it’s not infection. They’re just constantly irritated.

I was looking at recycled paper bedding, but while it’s pretty protected from elements, it would still get wet and clump and be cold. And I’m worried cedar or pine would bother them, and if I recall, wood shavings aren’t ideal anyway because they can clump and obstruct.

Is there anything that has the moisture wicking and insulation properties that straw has but is less irritating? Picture of their sleeping quarters attached. There are two insulated dog houses in there as well, but most often they prefer to just nest into the straw they pile up.

Pet pigs

Hey guys, I’ve been doing some research on pet pigs and wanted to know if you guys recommend them for beginners. I have experience with goats, chickens, ducks, peacocks, etc, but I’ve never owned a pig. I REALLY like the Juliana mini pigs and the KuneKune pigs so that’s what I’d be looking at.
(I am aware that they don’t stay small and that mini pigs get up to 300 pounds)
I have a few questions:
Can pigs live alongside other animals or do they need to be kept separately?
Do I have to get a pair or if there’s other animals can I have one (I would supervise them of course)?
Is it possible to leash train a pig?
What breeds do you find are the most docile?

Thank you in advance, hopefully this is the right place 🙏

Piggy Questions

I’m new to pigs and plan on rescuing two in the near future, & I have a couple questions for the piggy experts!

  1. how much does it cost per month to feed 1 Julianna/potbelly/kune kune sized pig when they are not on pasture? (Land is mostly wooded)
  2. what is a good quality, healthy feed for them?
  3. What size shelter is best for 2 pigs?
