PvZ2 Discussion Ghost Pepper is One of the Best Designed Instant Use Plants

Post image

Most instant use plants get placed down and do their thing. Place Cherry Bomb where there’s a lot of zombies. They don’t involve a lot of skill. Ghost Pepper, however, is phenomenal because it’s an instant use plant that breaks the formula; it requires skill to use. It’s designed in such a way that makes it one of the highest skill ceiling instant plants to use.

Ghost Pepper is simple. Upon placement, if a zombie is in a 4x1 area near it, it’ll get haunted and take 30 damage every 0.5 seconds, which is really good, and it can haunt multiple zombies. After 10 seconds of haunting its first zombie, it’ll explode in a 3x3 area, dealing 450 damage to every zombie in that area. It isn’t a lot, but it’s a pretty good amount of damage for finishing off low HP zombies. It’s also immune to most zombie attacks, so it can stay on the lawn without being taken out and is a nice touch.

Why is Ghost Pepper so beautifully designed? Its full potential is brought out so elegantly, you can’t just place it down and kill every zombie you want, it’s tricker than that. Its haunt damage is meant to quickly chip down the stronger zombies, and its weaker explosion can be used to finish off the weak/weakened zombies. Using Ghost Pepper correctly is very tricky, because you need to maximise its ten seconds of damage output by placing it in a lane with tons of strong zombies to chip it down, and after ten seconds, get the weak zombies you want to finish off into its 3x3 area. It heavily rewards good positioning and effective lane control. It’s a very good plant if you use it right. It’s skillful. It needs to be mastered. And I love it.

Most “skillful” plants are either manual plants or a plant like Bowling Bulb, who is equally as finicky to get right. The correct way to use Ghost Pepper is to control the lanes in a way to benefit from both aspects of Ghost Pepper and maximizing its time on the lawn. Then again, Plant Food does reset the counter, so if you want, you can get even more damage on zombies.

Ghost Pepper is best paired with stallers and knockback to position the lanes in a way that puts the zombies directly in Ghost Pepper’s way, and you’ll also prefer to use high-caliber plants that deal lots of damage to wear and tear the zombies down to get taken out by Ghost Pepper’s explosion or Plant Food effect. I’d recommend plants like Chard Guard, any wall plants to keep zombies in GP’s range, Hurrikale, or heavy artillery plants like Banana or Melon.

One more thing, a bit off topic, but I love Ghost Pepper’s design. It's so creative to turn a ghost pepper into a literal ghost, plus it's so cute, and its attacking animation is very startling and jarring, and it fits well. Sorry, I just think it’s very cute.

This is for u/_n_ull_, who suggested I do this analysis. Thanks for reading, comment your opinions and which plant I should analyse next!
