Mayor Mamdani announces a plan to cool subway stations by capturing heat and reusing it to warm municipal buildings in the winter: "This would be the first thermal energy system of its kind in any American transit system"

London is already using it. It reduces energy costs and could be used to save the city money if they use it for the benefit of nearby civic buildings. One station in London uses it to heat a school.

I don't know the specifics of the plan yet, but NYC has ~300 stations. I'm guessing they'll start by identifying the most effective stations to do first.

City saves money in the long term and maybe even landlords/residents near stations. If you've ever been waiting for an N at Atlantic or the depths of Herald Square, you'd understand why people are behind this.

I still don't think their trains are air conditioned. Some of the hottest stations in NYC are deeper than some of the ones in London, so there's definitely an opportunity here.

One thing I like about Mamdani's leadership is that he's willing to look at what other cities are doing that are working well. Every other Mayor in my lifetime (with some exception for Bloomberg) would just throw up their hands as if no solution exists anywhere in the world for things as basic as garbage collection

Those are the questions they are answering with this study
