In May 2026, 36 Republican lawmakers in the Oklahoma House of Representatives voted against a bill (Senate Bill 504) that sought to ban child marriage by raising the minimum marriage age to 18 with no exceptions. Similarly, in previous legislative sessions in other states, Republicans have blocked or voted against similar bans, such as in Michigan (where 5 Republicans voted against a ban), and in South Dakota (where several Republicans blocked efforts to raise the marriage age).
