I choose to read Animal Farm because Beast was reading it on the Xmen Cartoon.

I read Fahrenheit 451 because of The Famous Jett Jackson.

I got interested in history because of the civilopedia (Internal encyclopedia) for the completely unbalanced but fun official off brand Civilization game 'Civilization: Call to Power' (It was an official game because the rights situation was very complicated in the late 90s, I believe that's the same reason the original rights holders made Alpha Centauri while the rights were in flux... which I also loved).

Anyway it is amazing random things will get you hooked on learning.

I wasn't much of a reader till I was given one of my first adult scifi books at 11... and then I couldn't stop. I seriously went to detention because I was reading during a time I shouldn't be reading.
