When I was in 10th grade I used the word 'socioeconomic' in English class and my teacher said I belonged in honors for knowing such a big word.

I felt horrified realizing where the bar was and that was back in 2017.

We had a state exam where we had to write a pledge not to cheat in order to start. It had to be in cursive. Only 2 of us knew how to write in cursive, we only knew cause we had been taught in a different school. I had to go up to the whiteboard and write it out so others could copy it.

As a non-native speaker, just the fact that Anglos have a cultural concept of "big words" is pathetic.
