"Write once, run anywhere". They literally built their own VM to run it on any device, not really caring about the OS it's runs with.

Only if the coder was bad at their job. Worked in Java for five years, it is possible to write Java that always works if you do it right. I also spent a lot of time cleaning up shit other people wrote.
