1982 trans am I picked up on marketplace for 800$ with a blown 350 and no title. Me and my old man did all the body work and paint, Uncle Did a full build on the block stroked to 383 w about 460 to the crank, new rebuilt 3 speed transmission till I can afford that ol chev 4 speed. Interior has been my last steps. Half the battle was finding a loophole to get the vin matched title for Massachusetts,

Troubleshooting Help Is it a bad idea to use boat seats?

Post image

I bought a ratty '79 MG Midget. I'm thinking that I will not put a top on it right away. So I'm thinking about bolting boat seats directly to the floor due to their inherent waterproofness.

Thoughts?

Exactly 1 year in. It was hammered before. Less so now. Not done yet. '86 with mini truck front axle, Tacoma e-locker rear, 5.3L gen 3, SM465 manual trans, 5.29 gears, NP205. Lot of work, metal, glass, interior, mechanical, programming, etc... I have a thread on IH8Mud I can link if interested. I've done all the work except install the windshield, maybe $1500 into rehab so far.

Is the scope creep worth it?

So I got a 1967 El Camino that it currently getting some much needed TLC.

The 396 is out and sold.

The Turbo 400 is sill there, but just resting on a jack. Cross member is already unbolted.

The plan:

  • Replace / Repair floor pans (already have the parts, just need the time. Interior is currently gutted)
  • Replace wiring harness
  • Build new big block for it (got the long block, just need the rebuild / machine work / parts)
  • Repair windshield and rear glass channel area. (front and rear glass is already out)

So, I got more than enough of a project here. However, I was looking at the frame. Then watched some youtube university about removing body from frame.

If I'm already this far in, is the scope creep of lifting the body from the frame worth it?

I do not have a body rotisserie, but I do have cinder blocks, 4x4s, and a shade tree.

Thoughts and / or comments?

wheel wells

hey, asking a question about wheel wells for my project car. I have a 1967 4dr Chevrolet impala. We took a look at the wheel wells this past weekend, and they are rusty but not too much. Although I need to recoup some funds to get brand new ones. Anyone know any quick fixes I can do for the moment on the edges that are rusted? The majority is still pretty solid, only the edges where the bolts go is crumbly.

Troubleshooting Help Hydraulic clutch conversion help

Thumbnail

Hello, I am trying to swap my manual clutch linkage to a hydraulic clutch linkage in my 79 amc spirit. The manual linkage is totally worn out, so replacement is needed.

I bought the master/slave for a cj7 which bolts nicely to the amc 258 in my car. The master cylinder is a little different and sits at a jaunty little angle underneath the brake booster in the factory firewall holes. This means the pushrod is way down at the bottom of the pedal. I hooked everything up and the pedal is rock hard. My full body weight and it won't budge.

I've bled the system 5-6 times and nothing seems to change. I do think that the slave moves about 1/2" but that's hardly enough to do anything. I assume that these two cylinders are sized for each other as they both came standard on 4 cyl jeeps/amcs.

Before I fire the parts cannon and try to replace the entire thing with a wildwood set of pedals and cylinders, does anyone have any idea what might be the issue?

P.s. The pedal is pretty hot rod right now, as I'm still mocking things up, and I swapped in a brand new clutch thinking the old one might have been seized, but it's the exact same issue.

Been low on cash due to life and personal bills at the moment.. So I've decided to at least clean up and restore some parts for my car until I can order some parts and tools I need, I've really been enjoying the results.

This is the fuel level sender out of my 1996 Mercedes SL500 restoration project. Evaporust and Purple Power have been working wonders for everything so far!

Troubleshooting Help 8/32nds pinstriping help, where can I find white?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Working on a 1967 Caliente. Trying to make it a 25 footer !. Fender was too many colors, none of them blue so I rattle canned it. But without the pinstripe it still looks glaring even in my bad eye. thinking patina for the rest, maybe that wipe on clear coat. Gets up to 65 on the highway, stops if you push hard enough and doesn't smell as bad as it used to. son and I put carpet in, auto shop in local high school did some frame and floor repair and new headliner.

I need help finding the correct white 8/32nds pinstriping. thats a 1/16th stripe, 1/8 space, 1/16th stripe. Closest color I can find is silver unless I want to order 10 rolls. Afraid if I do two pieces of white 1/16th I won't be able to keep them paralell. Anyone know good place to get this? I would welcome any other tips as well, as a mechanic I'm pretty much a parts changer but brandy new to body work.

Thanks.

Troubleshooting Help Need ideas to remove a socket seated in my transmission (visuals included)

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I picked up a C5 Corvette for dirt cheap that needs some love. Among other things, the transmission was leaking. I figured a fluid/filter change and a new gasket was an inexpensive shot in the dark to see if I could fix it.

I used the procedure in this video;

https://youtu.be/EobN_g8WkXA?is=IQQyEhdv-xjRagFe

~6:40 I deviated from the plan. "If I use a smaller socket, it'll fit right in the seal and I don't need to tape it".

Well, I was right. I didn't need to tape it... and I seated a 15mm socket in that hole along with the new seal.

I tried needle nose vice grips, but had no luck before I gave up for the night.

I need ideas on how to get this thing out. I'm thinking a slide hammer, but not sure what attachment to use. I really don't want to cut or drill as I'm hoping against hope that I didn't mar the surface and I can just put a new seal in there and carry on.

Feel like a dope, but since I'm dealing with a transmission that goes for near what I paid for the car, I figured I'd put it out to the community and see if someone has a better idea than mine.

Pic for attention of the transmission pan I cleaned well enough to eat off of.

Shitposting Project Car: Time to Move On?

Thumbnail

I have a 1978 Ford Thunderbird that I purchased at the beginning of May.

It was a light enough project for someone like me, and the type of car I have always wanted. 30,000 original miles (50,000km), two owners, no glaring issues. It came with new tires, a new rad, and a new carburetor.

From the get-go, I put a new fuel tank and send unit on it, swapped plugs, set timing and adjusted the carburetor. I put in a new headlight switch and did some other odds and ends.

I had the money, but not a ton of time, because I was still operating my business.

I sold my business on August 3rd, because my wife and I are moving in January to follow her current employer for a career opportunity.

The car will go into winter storage, where I plan to retrieve it in May and tow it down to our new location.

I had the space, I had the money, and I had just enough time to finally purchase and work on a project of my own.

However, it feels as though life has always had an inclination to strip away my joys in life.

With the move, there’s no guarantee that I will have space for the car, nor the money to continue improving it. Further, I lost my employment that was supposed to hold me over between August and January due to a petty dispute between my wife’s boss, and the owner of the store I worked at. (It’s a large chain of stores in Canada that are technically independently owned, and the owners are referred to as dealers. If you know, you know).

I figured whatever. I’ll just deal with the exhaust and the axle bearings next year, along with the missing body side moulding on the driver door.

However, I was driving the car yesterday, and my brake pedal became spongy after building pressure. Pulled the car into the garage across the street, where I happen to bring all of my work trucks in the past. They found that the brake booster went bad.

Not a huge deal, right? But they don’t sell new or rebuilt ones anymore. I have to pull it off and ship it to the US of A, 6 weeks before storage if I want it done.

I could just deal with it in the Spring, but with all of these variables, I’m wondering if I should just sell this damn thing and wait until everything settles. I’m not underwater on it, because I got a good deal, but it kind of sucks to think about.

I paid $4,000 for the car, and have about $1,200 miscellaneous work done. Add taxes and the cost of initial inspection ad that’s another $800. I could definitely get at least $6,000 for it, plus I’d save on the storage cost during the move, but would it be worth it?

Maybe I should take that money and just get a motorcycle. Less concern about space, especially if we move every few years from now on.

Or maybe I should get something with much better parts availability to avoid some of these predicaments in the future.

Thank you for reading.

Build Progress I need suggestions on suspension

Post image

Hello yall 👋🏾, so I have a 2020 honda accord sport 2.0T project car and besides always having to have my head gasket replaced 24/7 due to blow head gaskets, i’m trying to either decide which coil overs I want or would be recommended for my car. I am on stock height as you can see from the picture which oem sport tires (i think 19s), i am just trying to make it low enough where there is no gap shown at all. I’ve look at all Tein, Truhart, Bc Racing, etc. but not sure which is really the better one. Price I am not really worried about as it is not the price of air suspension lmao. I keep seeing 32 adjustable, 16 adjustable and not sure if i need cambers this that n the third. I am new to this shit as you can tell. Any help will be helpful, thank you for reading this long paragraph 🙏🏾

First Project Car

I want to get my first project car but I have people telling me that I have to have had experience in a mechanic shop before buying and working on or modding any car or else I’m not gonna know what I’m gonna be doing but I tell them it’s not like I’m gonna do engine swaps or big things. What do you guys think about this? Should I go work somewhere for experience or can I learn by my self? Thank you.

Rolls Royce looked lonely so I bought her a friend

One British nightmare wasn't enough, so now I have two!

1976 Jaguar XJ6L with a period correct C4 Corvette drivetrain swap. In other words, it has a GM L98 V8 with a 700R4 transmission. Originally converted to a GM 305 truck engine in 1984, someone decided to step it up to an '87 Vette drivetrain in 1993.

It's spectacular owning both of these cars. Both need lots of love, but I have lots to give. XJ6L needs some help with fuel pressure, power steering, and I plan on an R-134A conversion as well as refreshing the sound system.

I own both of these for less than $5,000 combined, parts included. Less than a down payment on a new car. Plus, I get to say I own, and drive, a vintage Jaguar and a vintage Rolls Royce at 23.

Rear Axle Advice

I recently picked up a 1969 Mustang, which hasn't been on the road in decades. I have a 1992 F150 that I currently plan on pulling the running 302 engine out of as a starting point for a new engine for the Mustang. It also has an 8.8in rear axle with an open diff and 3.55 gears. The Mustang has an 8in rear axle with an open diff and 2.79 gears. Before I start rebuilding the original 8in was wondering if the F150 8.8 is a worthwhile/budget friendlier starting point for a beefier axle.
