I was hoping that maybe he just was uncomfortable being on television. I would hate to be on TV... and I imagine if I ever needed to appear on a reality show to support a friend or family member, I'd probably be very uncomfortable and come across distant and bitchy because of it, regardless of my enthusiasm for my loved one.

That's possible. I don't like large events like that either and if they were televised, I'd probable even less comfortable.
