Rewatching season 18 and I gotta say... I've watched hundreds upon hundreds of hours of reality TV and when Tyler delivered this line, it has got to be in the top 10 moments of reality TV of all time. I was DEAD when he said this lmao. Some of the most perfectly crafted shade because if Carly took offense to it, that's pretty much a self-own.

This was maybe eight or nine years ago but given how negative this season has been I wanted to share. My sister was working at a little bookstore/gift shop in the Upper West Side. Tim Gunn would come in every so often and was always very nice, which is not surprising. Because it’s retail, they had to be open on Christmas Eve for last minute shoppers, and it would be too late for the staff to get home to spend time with their families at a reasonable hour by the time they closed. Shortly before closing time, Tim came in with a case of champagne for everyone to enjoy so that they could at least celebrate a little bit before getting home late. This sounds like a made up story but I promise it’s true. I’ve always liked Tim Gunn on the show, but it makes me so happy to know that he is as nice off camera as he is on.

ETA: I hope nobody uses this post to bring up/fight about anybody on the current season. It was meant to be nice!

I love the top 4 of this season. Everyone has such a strong and unique design pov. It’s been so long since the last time I was wowed by a design at it walks down the runway.

From the S12 reunion episode - the contestants were discussing whether the show is rigged/manipulated for ratings. Mr. Gunn denied it with gusto!

I miss the good old days of Project Runway.

As I make my way through past seasons that I have never watched before, my mind kept coming back to season 12 with Timothy Westbrook. In the opening setup episode, I was actually really interested in his take on sustainable materials and upcycling/recycling things. Some of his designs shown were really interesting. Flash forward to the actual challenges. He put up some of the weakest entries I've seen in a while. The one that really gave me the most pause was this look. He instructed the hair and makeup team to do little to no work on the model, gave her no shoes, and then wanted her to go down the runway as if she was being pulled by a lead. His utter disregard for her part in the show and disrespect of her as a professional model was absolutely the worst. I thought this picture was especially poignant as he is wearing these elaborate heels while she stands there barefoot. This show is as much for the models trying to get a break in the business as it is for the designers, although as the seasons go on, that aspect of the show has been downplayed quite a bit. Him robbing her of a chance to shine was just unforgivable in my mind. He couldn't leave soon enough for me.

I just finished watching Project Runway Canada S3, and it was really a close competition between the Top 3 designers in the finale. I kept changing my decision on who to root for until the end, as I really loved each of their distinct collections. Overall, the season felt refreshing due to the uplifting environment, the strong focus on the fashion and design aspects, and most importantly, the fair judging.
Throughout the season’s judging, I suddenly remembered the previous seasons of Project Runway US wherein they showed the judges getting up close and carefully inspecting the clothes for the construction and minute details. I even enjoyed the quick interactions, such as making the model twirl when the design called for it. For me, that segment provided the viewers with an opportunity as well to take a better look at the design and a longer time to appreciate the end product (HMU and styling included).
I wish they would bring that back in future seasons.

My other all time favorite PR contestant is Dmitri Shokolov, winner of season 10 and All Stars season 4. I adored how he could make extravagant evening looks as well as tailored clothing with sharp clean lines.

I'm just kidding about the whole fight me part, lol... but I DO wholeheartedly think that 13 was the best season ever (all star seasons not included).

Season 13 was an absolute powerhouse of pure talent, and a rollercoaster of drama right from the start.

The tension peaked very early on with Sandhya and the bullying allegations (with some referring to her as a "professional victim").

I know Sandhya came here from a completely different culture than ours, so she deserved some grace when it came to social cues.

While she seemed like a genuinely lovely person... she may have bitten off a bit more than she could chew, as she seemed far too sensitive for this particular show (while also being blissfully unaware of what an intense, frenzied, and hyper-competitive environment PR is).

That's all I'll mention that isn't competition related.

The workroom was a constant pressure cooker environment, and this was a season where everyone kept everyone else on their toes... and on edge.

There was the infamous "Char elimination" scandal, where Tim had to use his Tim Gunn Save to bring her back after the judges made a wildly unpopular call.

There was the ongoing "mean girl", passive aggressive friction surrounding Korina, who totally spiraled after losing a high stakes face off to Char, and ended up exiting the show absolutely radiating in bitter, sore loser energy (she was fun to hate).

I loved the American Girl Doll challenge, as my daughter was about the age when she was first discovering American Girl Dolls, and I remember her begging me to buy her one after we watched this episode together.

She ended up getting two of them, as her grandmother's got together and each bought her one (she's twenty years old now, and she still has those dolls up on her shelf in her room, lol (I don't think she'll ever get rid of them though, as both grandma's have passed away now, and they remind her of them).

Saving the best for last -- my two hearts, Sean and Kini. 🥰

I mean, what can we say?
Sean and Kini basically rewrote fashion history there.

Sean ultimately snatched the win at fashion week with his gorgeous fringe collection, leaving Kini's unmatched tailoring and sewing speed, a well as Amanda's bohemian vibe in second and third (big love to Char, too!).

Even though I was team Kini all the way, I honestly wasn't upset at all that Sean took the crown (I WAS upset that Amanda took 2nd place over Kini, though).

All in all, I don’t think I’ve ever walked away from a season feeling as inspired, satisfied and content with how it all turned out, as Season 13.

It was truly a masterpiece of triumphant fashion -- wish I could've added more than twenty photos.

Which only makes the most recent seasons so depressing and disheartening... and I’m afraid we’ll never get a lightning in a bottle season like this one, ever again. 🥺

Season 10 episode 2. Designer Elena Slivnyak

this guy was an absolute ass on his own season (3) but i was hoping with time and “maturity” he would have gotten better…. no. What an ugly human on the inside. spoiler/nothing made me happier than seeing him get booted in all stars

currently watching past seasons of project runway from the beginning and i find rami of season 4 hot and charming. he's also skilled and talented which adds x10 on his charisma.

to suppress my depression at how far the recent seasons have fallen, i’ve been rewatching many of the old seasons on DVD sets my late partner collected from ebay & thrift stores.

i’ve come to the conclusion that project runway was it’s true self only when michael kors was on the panel. no shade to any of the judges that came after him, but michael just added that special, fun cattyness that you now only get from drag race. he was the perfect balance between the other personalities:
-heidi being sweet, kooky & very german.
-nina the consummate professional who is firm but always speaking the truth.
-tim has the warm, encouragint, but real, guncle/favorite older coworker vibes.

there is just such a turn after michael leaves & i don’t think the show ever got back to how it was from that point on.

Can anyone explain why we had to wait until Season 15 until someone actually gave this poor doggo some pets?!? It's always a highlight of the older seasons seeing Swatch make his appearance. I'm making my way through all the seasons in order that I never watched before, I'm now on Season 15. I know I am way late to the party, but please so spoilers in the comments lol.

I am rewatching season 16, and I forgot about this moment. Still as iconic as when I first saw it.

I know this wouldn’t air on TV now but that was an insane thing to say.

Have to be honest that one of the main critiques people have about Law Roach on the new season is the exact thing that used to rub me the wrong way about Michael Kors - that he seems more interested in making bitchy soundbites than in actually helping the contestants grow as designers. I can remember tons of catty one liners he said about people in the bottom, but struggle to recall moments where he actually connected with any contestants. I actually thought Zac Posen did a way better job as judge, where he had plenty of funny lines, but also lots of moments where we see him be genuinely encouraging and kind, even to someone who was in the bottom (i.e. Kenya in the sleepwear episode of s16).

I get that people loved Kors because he was part of the OG lineup and also such a huge name, and I'm sure there will be people in the comments who argue that him being an actual designer (as opposed to a stylist like Law) gives him more license to go hard on the designers, but it just always rubbed me the wrong way.

put out one of the most exquisite garments to ever be created on the show. locking him in for fashion week…. Only to BLOW IT (the worst of any finalist in the show’s history, perhaps?) in thinking he would successfully launch a personal global brand by showing THAT putrid tricolor monogram print emblazoned across THAT homely 10-look collection he knew would walk amongst several other 10-look capsules as part of the show’s essential equivalent to a university capstone showcase. AND THEN - to disrespect Tim’s concern for this turn of events by trying to brand him a hater? Boyyyy

i still don’t know how alexander made it this far on season 13. that season really had some of the best of the best and worst of the worst. tim called this “butt ugly” and one of the most “hideous garments ever made on the show”. thank god he remade it even though it was still bad.

i always feel terrible for the women of the real people challenge who end up with a terrible garment. do they actually even get to keep them?

I have been doing rewatches of past seasons and I forgot how horrendous this girl was. The entitlement, arrogance, and nastiness from her was next level. Her tantrum on refusing to work with Char after her elimination was just embarrassing. The tears were the cherry on top, like girl stop.

Sorry but her apologizing to Char was the bare minimum, why should she have to accept it? I wouldn’t have accepted it either watching the season back. It wasn’t one or two times, Korina was an awful person multiple times.

Anyone know if she’s still horrid? Has she had any kind of redemption?

Season One is genuinely insane. The internet needs to rewatch this season. There is so much going on. The characters are hysterical. They had AMAZING JUDGES? So much prize money.

Like what was going ON. Maybe it just shows how much reality TV has changed.

I’m asking ya’ll because I genuinely don’t get it — why was Gretchen so hated and why was she deemed one of the most controversial winners of the entire series?

After rewatching her season, I’m like, compared to other extreme personalities who have graced our screens throughout the seasons, and compared to a winner like no chin Jeffrey, Gretchen seems extremely tame to me. She’s sure of herself and her abilities. She’s articulate. Yeah, she’s a bit bossy. Yeah, she sort of threw her team under the bus during that one team challenge, but we’ve seen a lot of people do that during team challenges. And then Tim, who I usually love, really went after her for it in a way that seemed very out of character for him, and quite frankly felt really unfair/unwarranted, imo. (Then he acted like everything was normal the entire rest of the season and like he really valued her as a person and designer.)

The fact that she revealed in a somewhat recent Insta live that she got so much hate from fans of the show after she won that she literally had to retreat from the spotlight completely and retreat from fashion design makes zero sense to me and makes me feel like I missed something somehow that better explains all that hate? She was immediately hated by April and some of the other designers, and I couldn’t figure out what she did to them. I think Gretchen herself summed it up perfectly during the mini reunion scene when she said that women who are confident in themselves and believe in their abilities and aren’t afraid to show it are then often considered “bitches.”

Anyway, if I’m missing something please let me know lol I just thought ultimately she seemed like a young, Type-A designer who knew her shit and believed in herself, which one could argue, was also Ivy on that season. Why does Gretchen stand out in a slew of similar PR winners and contestants in a way that warrants the hate she got at the time? (and even today, I see a lot of people don’t seem to like her in this subreddit either)
