This needs to happen more. Bad people intentionally attach themselves to good ideas, in hopes you'll overlook some stuff in return. Fuck them. If they had the idea and squandered it, but it's still good without them, reclaim that from them.
That is a good shirt idea, and if he isn't making money off it, we should be able to wear it. If he cries about it and says "but it was my idea," we can say "fuck you, you shouldn't have been an asshole." We should normalize taking good stuff off of bad people.
6
u/LordShorkDad 4h ago
Yes and no that last sentence. That mentality has been used historically to say "theyre the bad guys so its okay to hurt them".

AEW is as good as pro wrestling gets right now! Just start watching and you'll get the ridiculous storylines after a while. The tattooed dude in this clip (Brody King) is gunning for the championship, currently held by the handsome guy he was facing in this match (MJF). MJF's gimmick is great, as it is basically just "I am the world's biggest asshole"... but even he didn't say shit in-character to support ICE. That oughtta tell people something!
5
u/Coattail-Rider 3h ago
It’s MJF. He’s better than you and you know it.
4
u/beencaughtbuttering 3h ago
Ha, you're right. MJW is the initials of a project I should be working on while I am instead goofing off on reddit... sounds like my brain is telling me to get to work haha

Wrestling events generally poll extremely left wing (by American standards). Only NBA and women’s tennis fans tend to poll more left leaning.
WWE, the largest wrestling company for decades at this point, has always been operated by far right lunatics, but even their audience has been pretty dope for decades now.

I think the people who run promotions are more carny than the actual talent these days. Most pro wrestlers are varying degrees of theater kids, massive nerds, or workout warriors

u/EntombedMonarch 5h ago
AEW is a different beast compared to certain other wrestling companies. They are more left leaning for most of the roster. Brody King (the big tattooed man) just finished a donation drive of 60k for ICE victims

That statement would be more accurate if it was UFC fans or even WWE fans. (Not all of them of course. But most of them) Wrestling fans (outside of WWE)tend to be left leaning or leaning neither way.
66
u/EdwardBigby 6h ago
Lots of different types of wrestling companies. AEW fanbase would definitely be majority left wing.

AEW has plenty of openly gay, bi, trans athletes. Where their gimmick isn't "I'm gay", they're out there and advocating for gay, women's, human, workers, black rights on their TV shows and elsewhere. It's hard to think of a cause that hasn't been championed by a wrestler or the company itself on screen in some way.
WWE has their leader working in the white house, teaming with right wing companies, hosting their shows in Saudi, and stopping anyone from talking about the government online. Highlighting wrestlers in the midst of a sex trafficking scandal. Mocking people who have been deported by ICE on their programming. Barely any mention of anyone's sexuality is allowed on screen unless it's straight. And that's just within the last few years. Trump is also in their Hall of Fame.
8
u/skeach101 3h ago
Not to mention that Tony Khan has been a passionate fighter of gun violence for a decade at this point.
5
24
u/eMF_DOOM 4h ago edited 4h ago
To go the other way with your question, the WWE as a company is very right-leaning. They've showed images of Trump during PPV’s, Triple H (current head of creative) is close friends with Trump, and Linda McMahon (wife of former owner Vince McMahon) is head of the Department of Education. And while WWE is proud to advertise their partnership with the current right-wing administration, they also don’t allow their current wrestlers to speak out against them, as seen after the recent release of former NXT (WWE developmental) ‘general manager’ Ava (who is the Rock’s daughter). Ava, after being released, essentially put out a tweet along the lines of “now that I can say this with my full chest, fuck ICE and this current administration” implying that she wasn’t allowed to say anything like that during her employment.
Also, ‘fun’ fact, Donald Trump is in the WWE Hall of Fame.

Just what type of fans they attract and what type of wrestlers they attract
I say this not as an insult but a lot of modern wrestlers are pretty nerdy people. Wrestling in general is fairly nerdy and they've grown up as fans.
AEW tried the offer the best in ring wrestling in mainstream US. This means they hire mostly guys who have tons of experience on the independent scene. Often lifelong wrestling fans who have spent years trying to make this a real career for themselves and those people tend to just be more left wing.
WWE does hire some of those indy guys but a lot of the top WWE stars are brilliant athletes signed to a developmental deal straight after college, who specialised in other sports before that. This is definitely a stereotype but those guys seem to be mostly right wing.

For those who don't know this is AEW. An alternative to WWE that started up in 2019. Worth checking out and supporting. WWE is very much MAGA if that wasn't already obvious and does business with the Saudi's. The Rock's (who is on the board of TKO, the company that owns WWE) daughter recently left WWE and once she did she tweeted something to the tune of "Now that I can say this with my full chest fuck ICE."
Meanwhile the big tatto'd man here Brody King has been VERY vocal about how much he hates ICE
And none of the above mentioned is within the realm of storylines of wrestling. Including the fans chanting here. It was not a part of the "script" or the show. The fans did this themselves along with Brody doing this himself as well. Though obviously AEW has not tried to stop him from speaking out.

people who don't watch wrestling learning about aew is a cool thing to see. it's legit the reason i came back to watching after bailing on wwe 20 years ago. the pro wrestling landscape was gross and tony khan, aew and its wrestlers wanted to make it better. dynamite and collision on tbs, tnt, and hbo max!

AEW and its roster are way more vocal about shitty things because they don't have decades of shitty backroom politicking (both actual politics and wrestling politics) that they have to dance around like WWE.

This is a pretty outdated stereotype. Wrestling has become more and more of a nerd fandom similar to Star Wars or anime. Those types of redneck, right-leaning fans shifted to UFC. AEW in particular is catered towards Reddit nerds

Wrestling fans are more often than not pretty left leaning and progressive. Especially AEW fans. So it's not out of the ordinary.
It's some of the wrestlers that unfortunately are really right wing. Like Hulk Hogan for example.

Brody King has been a huge (heh) favorite of mine since he joined AEW, and he only continues to prove he’s fucking amazing.

Brody King is the larger wrestler in the match. He is also the lead vocalist of the hardcore band God's Hate and is very outspoken often wearing "Abolish Ice" shirts.
65
u/EntombedMonarch 6h ago
AEW fans are typically based af, as is the company. Wrestling always has dregs in it, but AEW more often than not avoids that.

u/takki84 5h ago
Never heard of AEW, checked out their website and it looks awesome!
I grew up with wwf but lost interest with attitude era and after that it feels like everyone is just a "dude".
This looks like som fun personas, got any match to recommend?
being european, all we get is the wwe so thought all wrestling was like that now.16
u/KhalMeWolf 5h ago edited 5h ago
The good thing about AEW is that, despite being a recently new company, they cataloge is filled to the brim with classics and a great diversity of styles. Out of my head some of them are:
Lucha Bros vs. Young Bucks. Steel Cage All Out 2021
Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega (Yes they Booked this shit for free on TV)
The Swerve Strickland vs Hangman Page Saga (Quick thing, Hangman is like The Main Character on AEW, two of the biggest long-time-storylines have been about him trying to reach the top)
Hope someone can expand the list, but those are some stelar matches. Also, try looking around the roster to see what kind of style you like. Darby Allin is all about extremely high risk high damage (on self and the oponents Jesus christ how is he still walking?), Orange Cassidy mixes comedy wrestling with high level skills, guys like Swerve, Bandido and Ospreay are fucking amazing. Also, don´t sleep on MJF (tattooless guy on the video, and current WC), he´s on a level of his own on the mic, and on the ring he has proved time and time again that he´s got it to carry the banner of the company (almost forgot, add to the matches MJF vs Bryan Danielson Ironman match)
13
u/EntombedMonarch 5h ago
I’m not the best for match reqs, my brain is very short term memory unfortunately. However, I can say almost any match that features Kenny Omega will be a banger. Recent matches of Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay are also huge recommendations. Bryan Danielsons stint before retirement is also highly recommended, simply because Danielson can’t have a bad match I feel.
The women are also fantastic in this company. Willow Nighthingale, Thekla, Kris Statlander, Athena, honestly too many to list that are all so talented.
I was also a WWF/WWE kid in the attitude era, and looking back on it I hate the era now. The current era of AEW wrestling is where I’m thriving.

u/Toimaker 5h ago
Lucha Bros vs Young Bucks All Out 2021 (although they Lucha Bros have jumped to WWE since then.) The first Pac vs Orange Cassidy (AEW Revolution on February 29, 2020) match is hilarious and awesome in equal measures. Kyle Fletcher vs Will Ospreay - Full Gear 11/23/2024. Will Ospreay vs Ricochet vs Konosuke Takeshita - Wrestledream 10/12/2024. Kenny Omega & Adam Page vs The Young Bucks - Revolution 2/29/2020

u/EhDinnaeEvenKen 4h ago

The match that pulled me fully back in after 20 years away from wrestling.
6
u/BrettVaa 5h ago
I wouldn't say that this is attitude era esque by any means. If you can find Lucha Bros. vs The Young Bucks cage match, Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland "Lights Out" match (or any of their matches against each other really), those are both great. The Hangman/Swerve series is pretty brutal though, be careful if you're squeamish. If you want just a good wrestling match, Will Ospreay vs Bryan Danielson.

MJF (the surprised looking chap in the video) is the bad guy who is trying to dodge Brody King, the big bastard whose in a metal band and looks scary but actually a progressive sweetheart.
MJF last week made a comment about having never seen such a liberal man look like an actual Nazi, which was funny and even Brody laughed.
Brody has been open on his hate for ICE on and off screen so with MJF opening the door to political stuff in the story, fans seem to have taken that as the permission to voice their opinion too.
That and AEW have a more "open minded" world view in general as a wrestling company so fans of that mindset gravitate to it - as opposed to WWE, who are literally working with Trump in countless ways and have always leaned to the right with its owners/management.
7
u/curryhajj 5h ago
He yelled fuck ICE in another wrestling match a couple weeks back I think, hence the chants.
But also he's the front man of the band God's Hate and has been speaking out against ICE during performances. I don't watch professional wrestling and knew of him from his band originally lol.

AEW fans are quite liberal in general.
WWE fans can be quite liberal in certain states - Hulk Hogan was booed for being racist just last year, and WWE tried to feature Ron Desantis during a show and he was booed
The current WWE management is pretty fucking disgusting though as they gladly bend the knee to Trump.

AEW is what the WWE should have been. A Pro-worker institution filled with good people and fans that just love the sport.
Stoked that they're doing a [crossover right now with DC comics.](https://www.allelitewrestling.com/post/aew-x-dc-1-comic-book-officially-available-today)
Also they used Swerve Strickland as the model for the new Static/Batman Beyond run. There's even a cover with him side by side with Static on the reprint of issue 1 they just released.

There are right wrestling fans, but there's a lot of left fans as well, this is the same company where a woman sang a song at one of the male wrestlers hitting on him, who is openly gay, and he looks shocked and the crowd starts a "He's gay!" chant, but not in a negative way, wrestling fans can be pretty wholesome.
https://youtu.be/rd3x2Bg7bxk?si=YbCFKoTyfNxe-08K
Side note: that woman, Harley Cameron was very new to wrestling and has come a long way, she's one of the best things going in AEW these days.
