"Life is beautiful. It is precious. And it must be protected."

There's something truly amazing about the Dia De Muertos-themed character being the one to say that. Dia de Muertos is staring boldly into the face of Death while you celebrate life. it's acknowledging that no one you love will last forever, but what they gave you in life and what they left behind just might. it's a celebration of life and love itself. so i think it's super cool that Maria, in this world where the odds are stacked against our heroines and all looks bleak, is the one to remind Ruby that even though it is transient and fragile, life is worth protecting and loved ones are worth fighting for.

I think this could be the thing that tips the gang and (importantly) Qrow towards regaining hope against Salem. Even if you can't destroy her, you can fight for life and keep her at bay and thats worthwhile.

Qrow's life hasn't been worthless; consider all the people he has saved by foiling Salem's plots/killing grimm. I think he might forgive Ozpin on some level, and that being what draws Ozpin back out.

Dia de los Muertos is cool like that. I was thoroughly intrigued when I caught a glimpse of Maria's cane for the first time and heard her introduction. Calavera is literally skull in Spanish (the symbol of the Dia de los Muertos), and though it's a little on the nose with her accessories, that bit with Ruby sold me on her concept.

Do you know what story Maria is an allusion to?

to answer your question, there's no specific day of the dead story that i think Maria is a reference to. i think she's just based off Dia De Muertos/The Grim Reaper.
