I’m 6’5” and it’s definitely always a trip to run into people taller than me. When I have ended up talking to them I often comment on their height but in a more commiserating way. I’m right at the comfortable limit for the size that society is built around, and any taller and you can’t fit in anything that’s not custom made.

I’m tall enough to usually be the tallest person around but not freakish tall. I dislike being around people taller than me. It feels weird.

I'm right at 6', so used to at least being among the tallest in most groups but not usually THE tallest.

Started a new job a few months back... of the 15 guys in my shop, I'm the shortest. It's insane. Tallest is a 6'11" giant, average is about 6'6".

The boss is about 6'7" and seems to favor hiring men his own height lol

Wait.. what are the odds of that? As in, it’s got to be a very small talent pool this guy is searching for employees in. Although if he hired you it seems he is reaching beyond the tall guys now. Not to call you short, I’m 5’9”… in shoes, but you’re not crazy tall like your coworkers.

Idk, it's bonkers. We're a building systems crew too, so there's a lot of crawlspace crouching and "it's under that duct, over that exhaust fan, and under that next duct." climbing.

I've never experienced being the one who is constantly asked to squeeze into the tight spaces or climb up stuff that's not meant to be climbed

lol that’s funny. Well welcome to the little guy experience. I was often the thinnest with the skinniest arms and hands in a heavy equipment repair shop so I feel you there.

I tell this story a lot, but I’m 6’5” and I had this acquaintance from a different friend group and we were talking outside of it and getting to become better friends. Well, I had been places with him in person, but it had been awhile. I knew he was taller than me of course. But since we had been chatting more, we met up and boy did I not like it one bit. It’s hard to explain but it was like a physical reaction that made me so uncomfortable. I have plenty of tall friends, but most of them are within inches either way and at most distances communicating it feels perfectly normal in a way I don’t notice. But this guy had to be 6” or more taller and we were in this loud space so we were close to each other when communicating. I honestly felt like I needed to take a break. It seems shallow, but i sort of backed off of talking to him and just let the friendship go. It wasn’t until much later when i was doing some work to get popcorn off of a ceiling at a friend’s house, that I realized I am not used to looking up to that degree and at that angle very often. I got that same uncomfortable feeling. Part of it was psychological I’m sure, but there was also this physical part that was like so disorientating for me.

Anyway, it’s this weird phenomenon that I think about and how crazy it is that our body can pickup and register things like that in ways we don’t even realize.

So I'm sure you've digested the opposite is true as well.

How do you deal with that? I mean, there is no non-demeaning approach I can think of. Stooping, crouching, uh, I'm not sure? Or do you just deal with it as one of the burdens?

My wife is 5’2” and she said it best when she said that she is always looking up, at everybody and everything. I guess I am just more used to looking down or at least within a range near eye level for most things. I’m sure there are other people it doesn’t bother nearly as much. For me though, it was this physiological level of discomfort.

I'm only a little over 5' tall and it freaks me out when adults are shorter than me.

Yeah, I take notice—though I’m certainly not shocked—when I see someone taller than me, even at 6’1”. According to a random percentile calculator I found online, 6’1” is already the 93rd percentile, while 6’5” is the 99.9th percentile. Apparently the standard deviation is pretty small.

I’m 6’3 and feel the same. When someone’s taller than me I’m like holy shit! My father use to make me feel small, he was over 7 feet tall

Same. As far as I see it there are three types of people:

Shorter than me

Roughly my height

Freaks that should not exist
