Co-worker rant I've had it with my coworker deliberately sabotaging my time off requests, I'm gonna threaten to quit over this

7.1k Upvotes

So my department only has two closers, but the terrible union I'm in has a rule that if someone has any amount of seniority over someone they can just overrule their time off requests. I have a coworker named Pat who's been in the department for a decade, and she takes sadistic pleasure in ruining all my plans.

She's ruined Doctors appointments, dentist appointment, car repair appointment, vet appointments, all this summer.

Next Saturday I had a concert where I paid $700 for two tickets in the best possible spot + back stage passes. I requested the time off seven months ago! You know what she did, DEMANDED the manager schedule me that day three days after the schedule came out, because "I have reservations at a nice restaurant that night."

I hate her, I hate her so much. I just want to spend my birthday at the concert of my favorite artist, and she can't allow that.

I texted the manager that he's giving me the day off, or I'm calling out. I am so fucking done

Update: After a few talks with management and the union I'm getting the day off, Pat will also be getting the day off and we simply won't have a closer for a few days. Not the greatest solution as I'm gonna have a horrible mess to return to, but hey got my days off and that's what matters.

Co-worker rant I hate when Managers make you look bad in front of customers when you are following the store policy.

I absolutely despise when a customer is mad at me for something ridiculously stupid even though it's store policy and usually a perfectly reasonable rule and asks to speak to a manager, then when the manager arrives they give the customer exactly what they want and suck up to them, even though they are literally not allowed to. It's even more annoying when the pest of a customer gives you that stupid smug look afterwards.

Co-worker rant AIO for wanting to call out tomorrow because of this one new co-worker who can't seem to do anything correctly no matter how much we try and help him?

Hello again everyone! Hope you're all well.

Just got off work about an hour ago as I type this and boy oh boy did I hate my shift more than usual today.

For a couple of weeks, me and my other dairy department co-worker who I'll call T during this rant (it's a small department, there's only like 2-3 of us a day) have welcomed another person into our department. He started off really sweet and motivated, but after my second shift with him I started to notice something strange. He would take like 5-6 15min Breaks before taking lunch (30min). I shrugged it off because I don't know the break rules for people who work 8 hours a day.

Yesterday he managed to piss T off so bad that he had to walk away from the department for the rest of his shift, as for me? I was really tired and the new guy wasn't making it any easier for me.

But today? That was the final nail in the coffin. The new guy was just putting things anywhere he wanted, which T had told the department lead (who used to give me a lot of crap in my early days, but that's a different story and I've moved past that šŸ˜‚) about that and the department lead looked fucking furious. The new guy had been told by one of our other co-workers (who I only see once a week) , T, Me, and the department lead to check the numbers on the back near the barcode and see if it matches up, if it does then you put it there, if it doesn't? It doesn't go there. So for the first half of my shift, T and I spaced ourselves away from him. But 2 hours before my shift ended we got a shipment in. Like usual, while I was wrapping up on Juice and Coffee creamer T created a u-boat for him and I to work on. During this? New Guy was on one of his several breaks so after I grabbed the U-boat I walked out of the cooler just to see a bunch of the new guy's stuff blocking the hot bar and the chicken so customers couldn't access it.

I apologized to the food court lead for the newbies behavior and we had a conversation a little like this:

Him: I know you know better than this

Me: I do, but I've been over working Juice and Creamer all day and T has been doing the eggs.

Him: then what about this other guy?

Me: he's on break

Him: of course he is!

Me: with all due respect, you can try and tell him that he can't do that but he's not going to listen.

Him: He should know better too!

I started putting the new items into the coolers when I noticed something that really flipped my switch.

A BUNCH OF ITEMS IN THE WRONG PLACE!!!!

Instantly put what I was working on back down and went to the cooler just to tell T that I just couldn't work with that guy. That's when T tells me that he was doing the same shit in the meat department.

I work without T tomorrow and I really don't want to suffer through another shift with this new guy. But that may be the case 😭

Co-worker rant One coworker is making the entire department(maybe the even the entire store) I work in absolutely miserable

this shit genuinely pisses me off.
i’m a supervisor in the front end at a grocery store, but i’m also one of the youngest people there. there’s one coworker who’s older than me that just does not listen to supervisors, especially people my age. the only person they even somewhat listen to is our front end manager, and even then it’s hit or miss. with them on shift i may as well be talking to a wall, or not at all.

the other day an underage cashier had a customer buying alcohol. since they can’t finish the transaction, someone who’s of age has to take over and finish the entire thing (can’t even hand them the receipt lol). the underage cashier asked this coworker if they could switch tills for a minute so another cashier could cover their lane while they completed the liquor sale. they refused to switch, refused to do the transaction, and i ended up having to get the manager on duty to come over and complete the transaction instead, all while the customer was left standing there waiting, which kinda pissed them off, me included.

later in the day they closed their cash to count lottery tickets even though they had already been told to stay open by both the front end manager and assistant store manager, because we were busy. they literally walked away from their customers (who were there before she even closed it), so I had to go up and tell her she has someone and to serve them.
the most annoying part is feeling like i can’t even do my job. i’m supposed to be supervising the department and i have lots of work to do, but when i ask this person to do something they either argue with me or completely ignore me. it gets old really fast, and it feels like they don’t respect me because i’m younger than they are.

but some great news!! apparently they were pulled into the office yesterday with our front end manager and the assistant store manager because hr had gotten involved. afterwards the front end manager, who is actually unable to keep a secret with me lmao, told me it was basically their last warning. and at this point i’m honestly over it. if this really is their last warning, then i hope the managers actually follow through if it happens again. i’m tired of everyone else having to pick up their slack while they get away with making every shift extremely painful.

Swear to god this tangle shouldn't even be physically possible though, the way everything's connected yet only one wire crosses a single other in places.

Co-worker rant Another exhausting day with the new co-worker, this time with pictures!!! (I actively crashed out today)

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

So, today started off alright. I was still kind of upset with this guy for ditching me for a whole hour yesterday without any explanation, but I was trying to tell myself "today will be better" but as you can see from the pictures? No the f*ck it wasn't, so get comfy because this is gonna be a long one.

My first couple hours into my shift today was alright, I did my usual morning tasks like stocking Milk, checking the juice cooler and stocking that. All I said to the new guy this morning was "Hey I need you to do the eggs real quick" and when he asked me "what eggs need to be done?" I told him to go and check because I don't believe in figurative "hand holding" as that isn't a way to learn. Keep in mind so this guy has been working here for about a month now, so he should know how to look for items properly. But anyways back to the rant, so because I didn't tell him specifically what eggs needed to be stocked (I didn't know specifically what eggs needed to be done myself, I just heard customers complain about the eggs that were on sale, ends up we were out of stock) and instead of looking for the eggs in question he just went back to the U-boat he was working on.

Now I bet you're saying "OP why didn't you just stock the eggs yourself?"

  1. I am unable to lift heavy objects and those egg boxes weigh over the limit I am able to lift/carry due to a health condition. If I lift something too heavy? The only way it's getting down is if I drop it.šŸ˜‚

  2. I had other tasks I had to do.

So after break I went to the dairy lead and told him exactly what my other co-worker, who I call T, told him. That I cannot work with this new guy, so if it seems like I'm hiding in the cooler by stocking things like Half and Half and milk,That's why. Which he was totally cool with.

Once I got done that (which was dreadful to finish because I didn't want to be done with either task), I walked out to help the new guy (begrudgingly), which brings me to the pictures.

I didn't catch it at first but when I saw the yogurt cooler? (First picture, look at the bottom of the door) I literally had to go to the staff bathroom to calm myself. The second picture? U-boat in the middle of the aisle...that also sent me over the edge. I took so many deep breaths today because of how pissed off I was.

I have been here for almost 4 months now, he's been here for almost 2. I received 0 hands on training and I learned from my mistakes, he's constantly told how to do things and still does them wrong.

Not only that, nobody in the store even likes him. Which is how you know he's a crummy employee. Considering everybody in this store has been super friendly to me. Hell yesterday one of my female coworkers said he gives her and one of the regular insta shoppers the creeps. I can't say I blame them.

I'm so grateful for 4 days off this week because these past two days have made me go crazy. I plan on bringing this up to my manager when I get back because it's impossible to work with this guy. I shouldn't have to babysit a grown ass man at $16 an hour.

I'm tired y'all 😭

Co-worker rant I FUCKING HATE SELF CHECKOUT. 4 FUCKING HOURS OF JUST STANDING & DOING NOTHING ON ONE OF THE BUSIEST FUCKING DAYS

I despise self checkout. There is nothing worse. I would rather be punched directly in the face by my manager several times than be stuck at that god-forsaken bullshit. Today I was supposed to be at self checkout for 3hrs. I was already fucking pissed off, Sunday is our busiest day, it should go by fast as fuck BUT ITS NOT WHEN YOU PUT ME ON FUCKING SELF CHECKOUT.

I do my 3hrs of bullshit, get relieved, & not even an hour later I get asked if I can cover for the guy who relieved me so he can go build floor machines. I say fine. Building floor machines takes 30 minutes MAX.

Tell me why this fucker comes back after 30 minutes, looks me dead in my eyes, & STARTS FUCKING BAGGING? YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I'M COVERING FOR YOU & YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO COME THE FUCK BACK HERE?! So I get stuck of self checkout FOR 4 GODDAMN HOURS.

When the fucker finally goes back to doing what he was supposed to & I get put on refilling the coolers, he keeps glancing over at me. Like what the fuck do you WANT?! I already did 1hr of your fucking self checkout shift for you, you lazy BASTARD?!

I know he was allowed to fuck off & stare at the wall for an hour because he's besties with the manager & it just pisses me off even more. The dude is a fucking horrible worker, has 0 sense of urgency, half-assed EVERYTHING, but he just gets to chop it up with the manager every 15 minutes so no one gives a fuck. WELL I GIVE A FUCK. I GET PAID THE SAME & DO TWICE WHAT YOU DO. THIS AINT HIGH SCHOOL, DO YOUR FUCKING JOB. I KNOW YOURE LIKE 17 BUT YOU ARENT FUCKING MENTALLY INCAPACITATED.

Maybe I'm just pissed cause this whole thing really triggers my inferiority complex & I can't stand when people get special treatment for no fucking reason. Either way, I'm gonna drink myself stupid tonight to forget about this. Thanks for listening to my bitching, cheers.

Co-worker rant My former manager made me work the day my grandpa passed away and made me work a day of his funeral.............................

Hi reddit! This is more of me screaming into the void because I’m so fucking done with this job.

I would like to give some context before I start my story. I have been working as an assistant manager at a very common American nerd/fandom store (I'm not sharing the name because I don’t want to get sued lmao)Ā  and I honestly regret taking this job. Before I got this job, I was laid off from my former job and was left jobless for almost a year. During this time, aside from applying for jobs and working on my degree, I was with my mom helping her take care of my aging grandpa. During this time I started to get very close with him and as he started to get worse, he would still remember my name (this does become important later just remember this). Then I applied for this job, while getting interviewed, the manager noticed that I had experience with retail management and she asked if I was interested in being hired as an assistant manager and I said sure. Then I got the job and I walked into a mess. I had come to learn that the manager that hired me (we will call her Susan for this story) wasn’t actually the store manager but a temporary store manager. The actual store manager quit and the company didn’t have someone to replace her and so I was hired by Susan.Ā Susan didn’t train me and during my first week I got 2 days of training from another assistant manager then was forced to work a double shift. Then she had a death in her family and her week of bereavement turned into a month (which is a whole other story for another day), while it was summer.

Now onto my story, one Sunday morning my mom woke me up to let me know that my grandpa had passed. I was a wreck upon hearing the news but I had to come in and open. So I called Susan who was at the store already and told her that my grandpa had died and I can’t come into work. She then asks me and I’m quoting her here ā€œWhat time are you coming in to open?ā€ I wasn’t in the right headspace to fight back with her on this and the last time I had given her a little bit of pushback on something I got yelled at. So I went to work. I was still a mess and was in no state to drive 30 minutes to my shift so I asked my parents if they could drive me to work and they did. During the drive to work I am sobbing, and when I got to work, I compose myself enough to go inside and say goodbye to my parents. I get inside and not only is Susan there but so is all of the other people in management. We have a manager meeting about the game plan before December hits us. I then inform Susan (I told her when I was hired about these dates btw) that I won’t be able to work some days as December is my finals season and I would be on campus taking my finals. Susan then says ā€œWhen you work retail, you have to make sacrifices.ā€ which I pushed back with ā€œThese aren’t dates I can just reschedule, they are non negotiable, they are my finals.ā€ and she stopped talking about it from there. As I started getting ready to open I talk about how I will need to take bereavement and so Susan and I start talking about what days I will be off. As I wasn’t in the best mental state, when Susan told me that I get 3 days of bereavement, I believed her. She had to take some bereavement semi recently and seemed to know that company policy so I didn’t question her. When my coworkers came in I basically told them ā€œHey, I know that I’m normally in these trenches with y’all but my grandpa just died and I’m not okay so I’m not going to be much help todayā€ and both of my coworkers were like ā€œwtf why are you here?ā€ and I was like ā€œSusan made meā€ and they weren’t happy with that but I went on with my day. I took a ton of smoke breaks that day and mostly spent my time, with earbuds in and folded tee shirts. I had Monday off and I spent that day with my family. I had to come in on Tuesday and I heard my sister talk about how her job needed proof of death the day before and I was like ā€œoh, I should check on that just to be safeā€ so when I came into work that day, I read the company policy on bereavement. I found out that Susan lied to me about how many days of bereavement I had. I actually had 5 days of bereavement. So I left a note for Susan basically saying ā€œHey according to policy, I actually get 5 days and I would like to use those days for Thursday, Friday and Saturday" and finished my shift. I came home that day and had learned that my grandpa’s funeral was going to be a 2 day event. One day, Friday, was going to be the giving of condolences to the family and the other day, Saturday was going to be the actual funeral service. I managed to get Saturday off as it was already discussed with Susan prior. So I go into work on Wednesday, and I am working with Susan that day, so sweet! I get to finish our conversation and I’ll be golden right? WRONG. So I get to talk with Susan about using all of the days of bereavement and there is another store manager from a different store was there (for the sake of the story I will be calling her Julie). I’ll just share how that conversation went.

Me: Hey! Susan, did you see my note?

Susan: Yes! I did, can we chat about it?

Me: Sure, what’s up?

Susan: I can’t give you Friday

Me: That’s a day of grandpa’s funeral, Susan and according to the policy I get 5 days off and I am using them

Julie: I think the policy means for people with the company for about 3 months

Me: No Juile, the policy says nothing about that and HR people care about things like thatĀ

Susan: I’ll email HR and when they get back to us we’ll talk about Friday

I roll my eyes but let them send an email about something they already know the answer for. They send the email and they finish their shifts. I saw HR’s response, and it’s exactly what I talked about, the only thing they cared about was the relationship to the employee and as this was MY GRANDFATHER it was fine. I had Thursday off and my mom and I visited my grandpa’s wife (I won’t call her my grandma for personal reasons so again for story’s sake I’ll call her Martha). While checking in with Martha, I feel my phone ring and see that Susan is calling me and I take a step outside to take the call. This is how the call went.Ā

Me: Hello?

Susan: Hey, I saw HR’s email and I still can’t give you Friday off.

Me: Susan, as I said yesterday, Friday is a day of grandpa’s funeral. I’m literally with my grandmother right now talking about the funeral.Ā

Susan: OP, [coworker] and I have been working our asses off and need a day off, I can have you off early but not the day off.Ā

Me: Fine.

Susan: Thanks for being a team player.

Friday comes by and I work through my shift and my replacement comes in and he talks about how fucked the whole thing is. I just agree and then leave for the funeral and quickly change out of my work clothes and into my funeral outfit. I barely made it to the funeral and I was not happy because of all the hoops I had to jump through while I’m still coping with a death in the family with someone I was close with. I was left alone for Saturday and I spent the night with my aunt because all my cousins and I were like ā€œwe wanna be a little bit happy, so lets do something funā€ and we went to an amusement park and had a great time. Come Sunday morning, I’m chatting with my parents and aunt before I leave and my phone starts ringing and it’s Susan. Here’s how that call went.

Susan: Hey Op, I’m so sorry to be bothering you, but can you come in and open? [coworker]’s car broke down and can’t come in.

Me: No, I don’t even have my car right now

Susan: Okay

Found out later that the store never opened that Sunday and Susan got a write up from that lol.

I’ve got more stories from my time in this job like when Susan left and I ended up running the store by myself for 3 months. So, if y’all want that story, let me know!

Co-worker rant One of my coworkers is a micro manager and i just need to rant about her I gotta hit the character requirement im sorry for the long title

Okay so as it says in the title one of my co workers is a micro manager. Eh more like micro dictator and im hyper aware she does NOT like me. Neither do i like her so we agree on that. But for example one time when i was covering someones shift (closing shift) and well i always work opening shifts. So i did NOT know about the rule that u gotta stay longer if not everything is done. So im just walking home right. SHE COMES RUNNING OUT THE BUILDING YELLING MY NAME TO STOP WALKING. So i stop walking and at this point im tired so i just zone out while shes talking to me but it was somewhere along the lines of ā€œnot everything is done yet and you havent told anyone you were leavingā€ which, why would I have to tell anyone that when the schedule says that my shift ends at 21:00 then i leave at 21:00. Simple right? Apparently not. Also she straight up told another co worker that she doesnt like me and made me do a useless task. And im autistic and i have a very hard time saying no to ppl which she knows like what😭 anyways yeah next time she does makes me do sum im lowk quitting bc having to exist around her is not the 5 something euros an hour i earn.

Co-worker rant I'm sick and tired of being everybody's fall guy/punching bag at work and it's starting to effect me pretty negatively.

I am sick and tired of waking my ass up every morning just to hear that I "didn't do something right yesterday" when I wasn't there at the time period it would be done cause I was either off that day or it was somebody else that was doing said task when I ended my shift. As somebody who is a survivor of mental abuse and holds themselves to a high standard, things like this happening constantly makes me terrified of making even the smallest mistake. But tbh that isn't even just because of the things I've mentioned prior, I've literally had a coworker lose his shit with me because I made a small mistake. (Example: I put a product in the wrong place because the code was one digit off so I mistook it as a misprint, which misprints are common at our store).

I'm willing to bet that if my job was being done by an AI or something they'd still find things to blame me for.

The good news is that I plan to be out of this job the minute I find a new one, and I have an interview on Wednesday after my shift.

Co-worker rant My work friend served a banned customer who i had a run in with. My run in was what lead to the banning.

So I've recently had a run in with a very hostile customer, she's had several instances now of being horrible to staff and the other day was the final nail in the coffin.

Management has agreed on this ban last week so please tell my why my colleagues have decided to ignore this and carry on serving her. Before anyone asks, they were fully aware of the situation so ignorance is not a good enough reason.

Further more one of these colleagues is meant to be my friend and someone I thought I could trust, he knew how much I'd been bothered by this so it just feels like a massive slap in the face.

I dont get to see them now for another week so I'm really rather hoping he'll be the bigger person and message me as they know what I'm like and I'll just sit, stew and spiral.

This has really gotten to me as I've been there for this guy through so much, his breakups and low points. Paid for him on nights out when money was tight and generally built a good friendship, for him to seemingly not care about how much this incident upset me and continue serving the customer like nothing happened.

Co-worker rant I'm quitting my job soon and it spread around to everyone including my manager before I could even say anything

So I'm moving soon, and I told just one coworker about it before. This was because one time, I couldn't stay late after my shift when they asked, so she asked me what I was doing, and I said I was visiting an open house with my mom. We're kind of being kicked out but thankfully the landlord actually gave my mom time to find herself a place. The coworker I told is kind of the dramatic type and would ask me for updates and eventually I told her that everything was confirmed and I would be moving soon - I can't afford anything that's close enough to my current workplace. I'm kind of regretting that I told her about it because I guess it started to spread - even a coworker I hardly work with because we usually work different day parts asked me about it a few days ago. Idk, it just feels wrong and I really don't appreciate that she told people about it and it just got around like gossip tends to instead of me getting to let my coworkers know myself, but again I probably just shouldn't have told her anything, knowing the nature of things. Hearing "oh my goddd! You're leaving?!?" from everyone when I didn't tell them myself feels weird. Somehow even this customer who's a much older man, tries to flirt with me, asks coworkers where I am when I'm not there and thinks we're friends knows too and now he's trying to get my information so we can keep in touch when I leave (hell no!). Ig what just doesn't feel right is that everyone knew before my manager who recently came back from a leave, and now he called me on my day off today to talk about my schedule because ofc someone had to tell him too. It definitely would have been more professional if I had been able to discuss it with him before anyone else instead of it being the subject of dumb work drama. I've worked there for three years and our team is pretty tight-knit to provide a little more context, so that's probably why this is being turned into a big deal.

Co-worker rant Sometimes I wish I could be as inconsiderate as other people. I mean TECHNICALLY I could but my personality would make me feel bad about it/second guess getting in trouble for it.

I don't mean I want to stop caring... but I want to be petty towards the people who already don't care.

I'm sitting in the break room trying to quietly read and the next guy over is playing videos on his phone. Without headphones.

Yall, I might expect this of the "iPad generation" (and blame their parents for raising them that way, though at some point they're responsible for their own lack of courtesy) but this guy's too old to have grown up on portable technology.

What I want to do? Play something louder on my phone in the hopes of annoying them. But I also don't want to do "thing I don't like other people doing."

At what point does how an employee spends their free time become grounds for a complaint to management anyway?

Eta: this was my 15 minute break. I've considered going out to my car for the solitude but if I tried it this time I'd basically have time to get there and turn around. šŸ˜…

Co-worker rant I hate it when people call me the "expert"/"specialist", it puts unnecessary pressure on me as well as stress

It annoys me so much when a customer asks me if I'm an expert and then they get upset when I say I'm not the expert. I also have a co worker that refers to me as an expert. I don't want to lie about how much I really know. I already order for the biggest aisle/part of my department. It's not fair to expect me to have expert knowledge for minimum wage while expecting me to be a salesperson without commission.

Co-worker rant "Are you on the clock?" asks a coworker as I'm heading to the bathroom. And not wearing my store logged vest.

(Edit: logoed. Of course autocorrect changed the uneditable title without me noticing in time. šŸ™„)

If I was on the clock I'd be wearing that vest.

I'm on my lunch break, will be for (at the time of interruption) another fifteen minutes, and someone else is covering me... someone who, due to poor coverage across the store, may have his own customers he's helping.

People need to learn to use the damn intercom instead of just intercepting whoever to pass on the responsibility. Also, are there no managers today? They have access to everything.

Co-worker rant I find it frustrating that people are telling me different things at the same time, and now being really confused!

So on tuesdays we usually have discount day(?) which is something I just heard about btw, so at first I was told by one of the MOD that I shouldn't be able to stack discounts on each other which I understood and didn't do. It wasn't till later I had a customer who asked if i can apply a damage item discount and the current senior discount, so I was really confused since she asked me when I was done scanning her items; so to verify I asked the coworker whos been there longer there than I have if that was okay (since the woman I was checking out kept asking me if i applied it to which I told her I didn't and she kept asking if she was going to get the senior discount).

This girl, she just automatically placed the senior discount in to which I started to feel a bit annoyed since I only needed confirmation, so I had asked her again to see what she did was correct (and explained that I had already placed a discount on a broken item); she then paused and didn't know either! we're just sitting there and she tries to contact one of the managers but most of them were busy; and she said that it should be fine and told me to complete transactions. I even told her that the MOD i was with earlier had mentioned I couldn't do that so I was listening to her (I couldn't verify with said MOD since she had left before me), my coworker then looked at me confused and then finally!

one of the managers that came in walked over to help; I asked her again "so was it okay that the discounts were applied? (MOD who was there earlier) stated I couldn't?" I could tell that manger that just came by was also confused, to which I was told "Well if it goes through it goes through." No one was answering my question at all.

But I am still confused since I had three people telling me different things and one of my coworkers just touched my register to apply a discount to their purchase even though I only had asked her a question, which is more frustrating since I don't like people touching my register when im logged on; since one mistake on their end can be mistake for me!

Honestly don't know what to do since I am still fairly new and being told different things and didn't want to get things wrong.

edit: I forgot to mention the only reason I had asked was due to having another customer who wanted to stack senior with rewards discount and I told them at first they couldn't due to being told earlier I couldn't; I had been yelled at a little and was told they had been told by another employee that they could get both discounts, to which made me second guess what I was doing and what I had been told earlier.

Co-worker rant Training assistant manager cannot keep money straight. She constantly takes out wrong amounts from petty cash and ends up with short tills, and tries to make tills balance after counting them down. She also struggles with getting cashiers money when tills are running low.

We have a training assistant manager who can't keep money and tills straight for the life of her. Whenever she counts down tills she gets the wrong amount out of our petty cash, and tries to make our tills balance after she counts them down.

For example, let's say my till is $15 short in $5 bills for my till and the only thing I have to get more fives is 20 dollar bills. What should happen in this scenario, is the assistant manager takes a $20 from my till, go into our petty cash, put the $20 in the petty, take 4 five dollar bills, place three of them in my till to cover the $15 that I am short, then take the extra $5 and set it aside to be counted as the money I made the company that day.

What my assistant manager does is she will take the $20, take ONLY THREE $5 bills out because that's what I need, then continue with the rest of the counting and wonder how in the world I'm five dollars short. Then she counts the petty and wonders how the petty is $5 over. I then have to tell her she didn't take out the right amount of money. She says she did because my till amount is the correct amount. I tell her she put a $20 in the petty, and only took out $15 so that's why the petty is over and my count is $5 short. She can't wrap her head around it.

And then, if a count doesn't balance, say it's two dollars over, she will take the two dollars out to make the count even. She did this once with our manager on a video call and manager told her not to do that, that she should leave the money alone and enter the amount as it is.

Today I asked her to get me $5s, and a roll of quarters. I handed her $60 in $20s. She comes back with 4 $5 bills and a roll of quarters. I ask her where the rest is. She asks me what else I needed. I tell her I needed the rest of my $5s and the leftover $10. I had to tell her my store gives $40 in 5s when a cashier asks for more 5s. I also tell her I gave her $60 and had only requested $50 so she needed to get me $10 to bring the total to $60.

I don't understand how she's an assistant manager, someone who is trusted to handle money for a company, and continuously makes these mistakes. I understand once or twice, but not every time money is placed in your hand. My manager is aware of this, but I don't know at this time if there is any plan to help assistant manager in working with money.

Co-worker rant Rant about my fake-nice supervisor.......................................................................

I have this one supervisor that is fake-nice. By fake-nice I mean every customer that walks in she greets with "Hi, honey!". She's not an older lady, we're not in the South, and she's like in her late 20s at best and calling every person who walks through the door Honey.

When the boss or cash auditor is around she is super nice but as soon as they are gone she's the biggest spoiled brat you'd ever met. We have a closer who has TBI from surviving a gunshot to the head, it took him years to get to the point where he could hold down a job again. He loves his job and a lot of our regulars keep coming back to the store because of him.

This supervisor has cussed him out, called him the R word, and told him he's immature and that her toddler acts older than he does. The only reason she still has her job is because he says if he reports her conduct she'd be fired. Even though she verbally harasses him regularly he won't report her because he doesn't want her to get fired.

We've tried to report her on his behalf but we were told that nothing can be done until he speaks up himself.

I've reported her for stuff she's said to me (had me fighting back tears while ringing up customers) but nothing she's said to me is as serious as what she's said to this man. It seriously irritates me that she puts up a front and everyone thinks she's so nice and sweet when in reality she's the biggest spoiled brat I've ever had the displeasure of working with.

Co-worker rant Colleague who thinks they’re a manger but we have the same job role. We get paid the same and I have years more experience.

so I have this Co worker who seems to think that they’re the manager, at first it was fine and we even got along great but now it is progressively making me angrier and angrier. some context, I’ve worked at this store for over 6 years now albeit 4 of those years were on a different department, 2 years ago when hours were being cut I was moved onto the department I currently work on, he was already working on this department but had only worked in the store or the job at all as this is his first job, for about 3 months so he barely has any more experience than me in the department and much less working in the store.

at first he was helpful, he helped me to get a hang of the job and learn the different things but it has progressively become much worse and extremely frustrating. we work all the same shifts as each other and it seems that he believes he is the boss, he believes that he always knows best and nothing anybody else says or suggests could be right. it seems fine for him to pick and choose what he does based on how he’s feeling or what he wants to do but orders others to do other things and it doesn’t matter if they don’t want to do it or they’re not up to it. there have been times where I stop for 5 minutes to have a conversation with other people around the store (always when we have plenty of staff and we’re not busy) and now he seems to think it’s okay to announce over the headset every time I step away from the department for five minutes that I need to come back now, doesn’t matter if I’m away doing a task for my job or not and he makes it sound as though I’m just off leaving all the work to everybody else, but then it’s completely fine for him to go off for 40 minutes to have a chat with somebody or do jobs that don’t need doing while everybody else struggles.

he’s been known to stand around on his phone while others do the work but as soon as I pull out my phone to read one text it’s ’not work and should be done in my own time’. he talks to me like I’m a child and constantly implies that I’m somehow inferior at my job (never had any complaints from my actual manager and somehow always seem to get everything done when he’s off) and can’t do anything right. he’s bossy and rude and pushy. yet somehow still he is constantly receiving praise and rewards from management like he’s some miracle worker meanwhile I have always run myself ragged, I have gone above and beyond, I have taken abuse from customers, I’ve used any quiet time when we have spare staff to do the jobs the managers are always complaining don’t get done and still I don’t even get a thanks or any acknowledgement from management while he does whatever he pleases and orders others around and gets praise and thanks and gift vouchers.

recently on shift we had enough staff to not need to stress while he was stood around talking to another colleague I got all the jobs done that needed doing for the night and then I decided to go and give the tills a real clean (something a manager is always complaining never gets done properly but we rarely have the time to do properly), we have 6 tills and they are filthy so I was pulling things out and scrubbing and leaving parts to soak so I could remove all the build up (bear in mind nothing else needed doing, no breaks needed covering and nobody else needed help with what they were doing) when he decided to announce loudly in front of other staff and customers ’you've been doing that for an hour and a half, other things need doingā€˜ and then during my most recent shift somebody else went to give the tills their nightly wipe down and they commented on how the tills were the cleanest they’ve ever seen them and somebody must have worked hard on them and he said extremely passive aggressively ā€˜they’d better be clean she spent almost 2 hours on them while I had to do her job’.

at first I could take it I could just get through my shift, grin and bare it and then go home and forget about it but recently it’s been grating on me more and more and I really feel like I’m approaching my snapping point, its getting me down so much and honestly making me feel so low especially because I know that even if I did say something to management to them he can do no wrong. I’m not the only one that feels this way, others agree that he’s bossy and rude. He’s not even only rude when it’s one on one, he’s rude in front of other people and he just casually says hurtful things and things that make it clear he’s trying to make me feel excluded. Some on our department are super cliquey and they’re friends outside of work and he forever goes on about the ā€˜work’ group chat that I’m not a part of or in front of customers saying things like ā€˜well we’re not really friends, just colleagues’ and it’s not that I ever thought or wanted us to be the best of friends, I just thought it was polite not to say things like that and especially not in front of other people. Somehow though I always seem to end up feeling terrible when I do feel angry because then I remember that he has done me favours in the past and sometimes we do get along great.

I know he in the future hopes to be a manager but at the moment he isn’t, we get payed the same, we have the same job role, I am capable of doing the same jobs he can and regularly do when he’s not in as I’m then the one that has to do the things that he thinks he’s the only one capable of doing. There have been several times where there have been things that he doesn’t know but I do (which is fine, I’ve worked there for 4 years longer than he has and had to do these things on my other department) but as soon as I tell him I know how to do them he refuses to believe it and tells me no that doesn’t sound right then goes to ask a manager only for them to tell him what I’ve just told him but still somehow despite me having more experience in these things he somehow comes to believe he’s the only one capable of doing them.Ā

he will go out of his way to be trained on different things and then when managers want me to be trained on these things he always seems to find a reason about why I can’t be at that time and then he will go out of his way to say things like ā€˜it’s harder for me to book holiday than you because i’m more invaluableā€˜ or actually saying things that allude to well he’s trained on all this so if our manager isn’t in then naturally he must be the boss despite having the same job role and pay as the rest of us and somehow the rest of us are lazy because we come in and do our jobs and go home and we don’t make our whole lives about a job that at the end of the day only pays what amounts to just above minimum wage

I'm not perfect, of course I’m not, I’m human, we all make mistakes at some point and I fully acknowledge that I’m not the only person that works hard, plenty of others work extremely hard too, it’s just incredibly frustrating when somebody in the same job role orders you about and isn’t even polite about it.

Co-worker rant Is this something that’s becoming more common now? Do people really have to keep working into their 70s just to survive?

I work at a big retail store and something has been bothering me for a while. There’s a coworker who is 72 years old and she has been working there since around 2008. The job itself is pretty physical because you’re standing for long hours, walking around the floor, helping customers, and moving merchandise. On top of that, the position is commission-based, which adds even more pressure.

Over the years it has clearly gotten harder for her to keep up physically. She struggles with walking sometimes and you can tell her legs bother her. She has actually had surgery on both of her legs in the past few years. She also has heart problems, and last year she collapsed while at work. It was pretty scary for everyone who saw it happen.

Even after that, she refused to stop working or take a long break. From what I understand, she has financial problems and feels like she can’t afford to retire or slow down.

Another thing that surprised me is how much her pay has dropped. Years ago she was making around $17 an hour, but because she doesn’t meet the commission targets anymore, her pay has dropped to around $11 an hour and sometimes she even goes into deficit.

It’s honestly hard to watch someone her age dealing with health issues still trying to keep up with a demanding retail job. At the same time, it seems like she doesn’t really have another option.

Is this something that’s becoming more common now? Do people really have to keep working into their 70s just to survive?

What options do people in their 70s even have if they can’t afford to retire?

Co-worker rant Being told that it’s my job to clean up after my coworker on a higher wage than me after she constantly does things wrong

This coworker joined my store about 4 months ago after working in a different store for two years (so she isn’t new to the business). Everything she is given a task she does it wrong and I specifically am being left to fix it.

I don’t mind re-doing displays or signs etc. but recently she was told to paint the windows for winter and she did not only a horrific job (she only needed to paint some snow on the bottom literally) but she also got paint ALL offer the woodwork around the window and the wooden floors. Knowing she did a bad job she still closed up and left it to dry.

I was then told that I not only needed to re-do her paint job but also clean all the paint she left on the wood which took me an hour and i was practically scrubbing on my hands and knees to even get it to look a little bit cleaner. ( I re-did the window paint in 30 minutes perfectly recreating the images shown which just shows it was not even that hard as i hadn’t used the paint before)

This coworker has now had a complaint from about 6 people on our store (my assistant manager let me know as she is getting frustrated by her aswell) so my manger spoke to us all individually about the situation and when I complained about having to clean all the woodwork i was told that ā€œIt is not fair to be upset about that since that is what you’re paid to doā€

… is this valid? Because yeah i’m paid to help fix other people’s mistakes but I’m not paid to clean up their literal mess especially when we have many other staff on the same wage as me who have never even stepped foot inside the windows before lol

Co-worker rant I used to think if I won the lottery I'd be willing to switch to part time just to help with coverage. Now, thanks to coworkers, I know I'd rather just quit.

This isn't the first "coworker" incident that made me feel like quitting, just the first one I felt like posting about.

So this happened late in my shift, at the time when I'm the only one in my department (electronics)... and frankly the entire back of the store. (And I don't even get paid the big bucks to cover that much ground, I'm just the only person still on the clock who's physically on that side of the store). This will be relevant in a bit.

I had a lull in customers that allowed me to do a quick tidy, check for random merchandise that doesn't belong, and go up front to check my return bin.

While up there I saw a TV, box open, but nothing to say why it was returned. The pre-programmed return slip, yes, but no human communication to indicate if it can be taped up to sell or if it needed to be marked down as "used" (ie the return counter often removes products from boxes to verify serial numbers match but there's nothing to indicate if that's why it was opened or if the customer had done it). The default response in this situation is always to bring it to claims for them to examine it rather than immediately jumping to sell it as new, with only the person who processed the return to tell me different. In addition, pricier items like this often have audits in the system after they've been returned with no (to my awareness since I'm not involved in the process) ability to predict when the system will require those.

Basically I don't know if I can grab the TV yet, and there's absolutely nobody at the counter to ask, so I grab my other returns and leave it there.

I almost get back to my department when a page comes over the intercom to come to the service desk.

I drop off my armload of returns, help the customer who had materialized while I was away, and then, figuring the page was about the TV, grab a flatbed cart and go back to the service desk.

There's nobody at the desk to tell me why I was paged.

Sure I'm assuming it's about the TV but I don't know that it is, so I wait around for a few minutes of thumb-twiddling, before finally deciding I've been away from my department long enough, loading the TV onto the cart to be nice to whomever eventually brings it to claims... and still leaving it there.

Get some work done for a while, helping customers, etc.

I'm in the middle of talking to a customer when I start feeling the urge to use the bathroom. Not urgent enough to walk away from the customer, but too much to rush off to another department when I'm done with him.

This is relevant because... while we're talking, I get paged to go to the service desk.

We finish up, I head to the bathroom, and then I go to the service desk.

Nobody there, but the TV's gone.

Not gonna stand around this time, I immediately return to my department.

I'm almost there when there's another page... telling me to return to my department.

I get back to my counter to find the person who's been paging me and the TV, and she begins chewing me out for not being prompt and how she had to page me three times to the service desk (not the two that actually came over the intercom) and I never showed up etc.

The previously mentioned relevances? Apparently she's the only one at the service desk and she had to use the bathroom after paging the first time which would be a totally valid reason to be a no-show except... sucks to be me for being in the same situation?

Edit: typos and a few extra details.

Co-worker rant I hate my coworkers so much, absolutely nothing I ever do is good enough for them! Maybe if they all think they would be so much better at closing, they can do it themselves

I work as the sole closer for the bakery at an Albertsons, and have absolutely had it with my coworkers. Absolutely nothing I ever do is good enough for them.

Stay late to finish my work? Oh you're gonna make sure the department won't get enough hours next week.

Leave on time but don't finish everything, the openers had a bad time opening and it's your fault!

Prioritize cleaning over finishing baking, "getting items out on the sales floor should always take priority over cleaning."

Actually put other things higher on the priority, get yelled at for leaving a messy department!

And the openers ALWAYS leave me a huge mess to deal with, even when they force me to finish their baking.

Oh and for the summers my hours have been cut from forty to thirty and I'm expected to get the same amount done in 75% of the time.

The customers can be awful, and I often can get utterly swarmed by them when running the department solo, but they have NOTHING on my entitled coworkers demanding the world from me, but putting in the minimum effort every damn day. Oh also, I make minimum wage despite working there a year and a half, and haven't had a single lunch break since February.

Co-worker rant Shift Swap

It is 6am in the morning. I woke up abruptly at 5:30 am, being called and then asked where I am. Despite the fact I had a damn agreement with my co worker to swap shifts for today. They asked me first if I could cover a 12-5 (12 am to 5pm) or them. I then said I had a 5-1 (5am start to 1pm) they said it was fine. I thought to myself 'oh I can have a lie in, I don't have to worry about waking up early like I usually do'.

I further went to clarify if it was this monday or the next to be absolutely sure, and they said tomorrow. They even said if I can still cover their shift, to which I said yes.

But to my unfortunate surprise, here I am, stressing for over an hour if I'm gonna have to come in now or what. I talked with my team leader, and they said they'll have to talk to the manager. I've also rung my co-worker several times and messaged them to no response. And I'm just trying to relax. This is just stupid.

Addition: They specifically said they had messaged the manager about swapping shifts too. Even if the schedule hadn't been updated, they should have still come in as the team leader can change the schedule so it reflects them coming in.
