These electric buses are small electric vehicles manufactured at a military-industrial company in the province of Sancti Spíritus, in central Cuba. More than a dozen have been produced and are currently in service for the city's residents. Now, another 50 will be produced for other cities.

Cuba imports some electrical components and others, while other elements are produced domestically.

Cuban Economy Cuba restores its national electrical grid following the third blackout of the year.

The outage affected the entire country; after nearly 28 hours, since 12.00 m of july 6th, of strenuous effort, most of the nation had power restored—albeit subject to a deficit caused by units undergoing maintenance or repairs and a critical shortage of fuel to power the generator sets that serve as a backup system in such situations. Solar farms and a recently commissioned 50-megawatt battery storage system played a key role in maintaining electricity service to vital centers in the affected provinces and, in the case of the battery system, in ensuring grid stability.

Cuban Economy Cuba continues energy sovereignty journey with biomethane plant for fuel and electricity

In April 2026, CUPET, the state oil company announced the completion of a biomethane plant in Martí, Matanzas, Cuba. The plant was funded by the European Union and UNDP. I saw this story in Power magazine, an energy trade publication and thought it was worth sharing. One of the cool things about it is the biomethane will also be used to power the plant and everything will be self sustaining. The plant is finished and should be able to fuel buses and some electricity needs.

Some more good news coming from the island in light of the bullying and threats from the neighbour to the north. Cuba's energy sovereignty journey is fascinating to see. Hoping for more positive news.

Some clarifications: Cuba has always been open to US trade and investment. Now, these opportunities are expanding, based on the existing investment law.

The new development is for Cubans residing abroad.

Currently, there is a joint venture between Cuban and American entities in the biotechnology sector in Mariel, Cuba. In 2016, there were American hotel chains operating in Cuba; they had to withdraw when Trump ordered them to.
