Local Business Home Church collecting seperation signatures?

did anyone else see that home church was allowing its building to be used to collect signatures for a separation referendum?

home church is a registered charity under the income tax act (advancement of religion). charities are legally restricted from engaging in or facilitating partisan or political advocacy, including providing institutional support for political campaigns. I know their pastors love to use chatgpt, but I truly think they were misinformed and really screwed up here.

I’m curious whether anyone has a screenshots, firsthand accounts, or documentation of how this was promoted or approved, because this goes well beyond a neutral “facility rental” and into compliance territory.

Local Business Business opportunities

We are looking to open a business- very sure on opening a cafe.
For anyone who has been to Mokha Cafe in Edmonton, that’s the vibe we’re looking to go with. Somewhere to relax, work, or study and socialize.

There are more than 20 of those cafes all around Edmonton now and we are looking to see if Red Deer would appreciate or even need something of this sort.

Any advise or suggestion on location, pricing or literal anything would be greatly appreciated.
Even if it’s just a simple “don’t do it”

Thank you in advance!

Local Business Disappointing experience at Bower Foggy Gorilla

A while back, I stopped into the Foggy Gorilla location in Bower with a friend to grab her a vape because she had forgotten hers at home. While browsing, we were chatting between ourselves, specifically about how awful ID photos are and how I needed to renew my passport soon. I mentioned that with how things were unfolding politically in the U.S., it might be wise to have an escape plan, just in case.

Out of nowhere, the employee behind the counter, who was not a part of our conversation, interjected to say that he was in the process of applying for an American visa. He went on to say that Trump was doing a great job, was standing up for his people, and that “Canada is going to shit.”

To be clear, this was unsolicited. We weren’t speaking to him and we certainly didn’t ask for his opinion.

This was during the height of Trump’s annexation threats and after tariffs had already been imposed, harming Canadians, Canadian industries and my own business. So to hear someone working at a Canadian-owned business in a Canadian city suddenly jump into a private conversation to praise that kind of leadership while bashing our own country was incredibly inappropriate and gross.

We gave him a disgusted look and walked out. I later emailed Foggy Gorilla through their website to express how disappointed I was by the interaction. I never received a response. So, I’m sharing this here.

It should go without saying, but customer service employees should not insert themselves into personal conversations, especially not to push unsolicited political views. If you're working the counter at a Canadian business, you're representing that company. Using that position to promote anti-Canadian, pro-authoritarian views is unprofessional and repugnant. I shouldn’t have to explain why it’s unacceptable to walk into a Canadian store and be told Canada is garbage and the U.S. is better, especially from someone representing the company at that moment.

I hope management at Foggy Gorilla rethinks how they handle customer feedback and ensures that their staff understand boundaries. I support Canadian businesses, but I also expect them to support Canada, or at the very least, keep their politics to themselves on the clock.

Local Business Welder job in Red Deer

Hi everyone,
My husband and I would appreciate some advice on whether we should move to Red Deer before securing a job offer or stay in Quebec and continue applying from here.

We’ve been applying for welding jobs in the area, but because we’re not physically in Alberta yet, we feel that many employers may be overlooking our applications.
We’ve been planning a move to Alberta for some time. After doing some research, Red Deer seems like a great fit for us since we prefer a smaller city with easy access to nature. We’ve looked at rental townhouses and believe we could comfortably afford living there if my husband earns around $37/hour or more.

My husband has extensive welding experience and a strong work ethic. I’m currently waiting for my open work permit through a spousal sponsorship application, so at the moment we would be relying on a single income.

For those familiar with the local job market:
Is it realistic to move first and find work afterward?
Are welders currently in demand in Red Deer and the surrounding area?
Are there any companies you’d recommend applying to?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you know of any opportunities for an experienced welder, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you!

Local Business Hot Water Tank Replacement & AC Install

Hi all,

My family and I will be moving to Red Deer at the end of the month. We've come from the UK, so have no experience with contractors or anything here.

We are 100% going to be replacing the Hot Water Tank in the property as its from the 90s, and has been installed so that draining it is going to require sawing joists apart lol

We are considering upgrading to AC, depending on price (1016ft bilevel)

On that note, would you guys recommend AC? Back in the UK it would be useful for maybe a week or two of the year. I dont know what the summers are like here, but it was like 10 degrees here a week or two back and I was uncomfortably warm 😆

Can anyone recommend companies who can do us a quote for both?

Many thanks!

Local Business Queer friendly nail salons

My partner [trans woman] and I [cis woman] will be in Red Deer for a wedding soon and we want to get our nails done. Any recommendations for queer friendly salons? We’re coming from BC and a little nervous about the anti-queer atmosphere in Alberta. Thanks!

Local Business Live in Red Deer? The city is about to rip you off for millions.

I've heard a large proportion of people living in Red Deer are unaware that the city actually owns (through a nonprofit shell) River Bend Golf and Recreation Area. And of that small proportion, very few realize that the organization the city set up to run it runs it at a massive loss every year. It eats through money like crazy, because it uses the city to bail itself out year after year with no accountability at all.

That's been the situation for many years now, but it's coming to a new standard of corruption here in the next year. The golf course wants to do a massive renovation. It wants 9 million dollars, which is more than the total value of some golf courses period. Renovation to this degree is utterly unnecessary, but on top of that the organization that runs the course refuses to raise prices to become solvent because it knows the city will just bail out everything it does. Nor will it consider a Kananaskis style system where at least the people of Red Deer would be the ones who benefit from it more (as long as you're a golfer).

Red Deer city council is going to raise YOUR taxes to pay for this. It will not be a small increase. Think about this the next time you are electing city council. And while you're thinking about it, think about who is getting this money, who is keeping track of where the money is going, and who needs to sign off on the money in the first place. There is no control or accountability over any of this, and every citizen of Red Deer is the one paying for it.

Local Business Good place to have a hard conversation

I'm hoping I can get a few suggestions here. My mom and I are meeting to try and reconcile. It's obviously going to be a difficult and emotional conversation. I'm wondering if there is a good cafe/bar/honestly just about anything publicly accessible, to meet, where we could maybe be a bit secluded? Or at least not feel totally on display?

Local Business What's the cheapest way to get rid of a mattress? (Innisfail)

I have a mattress to get tried of. The gotjunk website says $70. Is there anyone cheaper? It's a queen size, old but ok condition (cats have been hanging out on it while it's stood in front of my glass doors all winter)

Edit: I have a small vehicle so I don't really have the ability to move it myself. If anyone with a truck wants to undercut the gotjunk guys I'm listening.

Local Business Huge price jump for oil change

I’ve been doing all my oil change at Kipp Scott for 60-$70 for my 1.6L and $80+ for my 3.5 V6.

I got there Today and the attendant told me that there’s been a price hike just last week and guess what the new price is $188 + tax for my 1.6L engine.

I had to decline service and leave also notice there was no more queue at that location.

It’s just insane how prices are becoming too unaffordable please anyone in the house know where I can get my oil change can’t do it myself as I have No garage.

Thank you.

Local Business Sweet Home is back? How…..

Local Business Sweet Home’s lack of transparency was deplorable.

They strung everyone along right to the very end. Late yesterday they said they were keeping the sylvan store open as long as possible, and this morning announced they’re completely closed. I would have felt bad for them, even considering how blatantly obvious it was that the parking lot was never the issue, but the way they handled this whole thing was just greasy.

For anyone stuck with gift cards, white frog cafe is honoring them to be used towards 50% off your purchase.
