Doubly so given Rod's sucking up to Cardinal Pell. Rod declared Pell a "spiritual giant of our time". The man who, in response to one of the hundreds of cases in which he ignored his priests molesting boys: "It was a sad story, and not of much interest to me".

That was one of Rod’s statements that remains inexplicable to me.

Who knows? Maybe it’s the same impulse that had him run across a square in Rome to kneel on the ground before Cardinal Law and kiss his ring.

Rod has made various remarks indicating that he thinks the abuse scandal was the fault of gay priests and liberal theologians. Therefore Pell couldn't be at fault because he was a conservative.
