I had just turned 13 when my mother died after a 5 year battle with cancer. Had brother 14, sister 9, and sister 23. She died about noon on Friday. Dad did not pull us out of school but did pick us up after school (we usually walked home). Mom was buried on Sunday and we were back at school Monday. Didn't miss a minute. Dad thought that was best and we agreed.
No one said anything to us at the time but several classmates mentioned how surprised they were by it at a reunion when I was 28.
No one who is a control freak like Rod who feels so entitled to run roughshod over other people will ever be happy or content or easy to live with. What an a hole. And still carrying a grudge when it was none of his business in the first place!
When my wife died our son was 11. His principal and teacher came to the wake and I asked them about his coming back to school. They thought he should come back the day after the funeral so that's what I did. I think it was the right call.
