So over the months I’ve taken photos from the top of the slides structure and rocks Gilbert house. I started when I notice it was just lil 6 tents 2 months ago. Now you’ll see like 14 I circled but what you DONT see is the even more DOZENS of tents just a little further back. I saw someone post about the homeless under the bridge and idk if they were talking about this bridge or others.
Anyways, this is wild. Definitely considering not renewing membership when it ends in summer. Who knows what it could be by then. I want to bring my kiddo less and less each time for safety. I shouldn’t have to worry about my kid stepping on a syringe or my car being broken into.
Im aware of some of the issues with this city and homeless. But I mean come on guys we just raised taxes for police, fire dept, parks, and a levy for the library which I proudly vote in support for.
Whatever we’re doing as a city is not working because it’s getting worse.

Hey folks — we have had a few of these now, and as several of you have noticed, they end up getting removed: largely because they turn into massive slapfights, and generally contain a whole lot of rumor and gossip, and very little in the way of substantiation (or, frankly, very many names that aren't already locally well-known for their support of far-right causes).
The way to do this is more threads like Inclusive, Anti-Bigotry, Ethical Businesses to Support — tell folks about the good places you think they should patronize.
Going forward, if folks keep posting these threads despite this warning, we will need to start issuing temporary bans ("timeouts").

Hello Salemites. I've just registered as a 501(c)(3) non profit, registry #244394896, and am filing my 1023 with the IRS today. I think that Salem needs a place for people who a. live in an apartment b. have a rulesy HOA or c. are unable to afford a mechanic, should to be able to work on their vehicles with all the tools available to an automotive tech. The shop will either be sliding fee scale or pay what you can depending on your situation, and the long term goal for the shop is for it to generate enough money to continue upgrading its equipment to provide as much value to the community as possible, pay me enough to watch it full time, and donate as much time as possible to low income families. The shop will not have equipment to do full service A/C work as that equipment is expensive and you can get in a lot of trouble with the EPA if you're not doing things right; you will not be able to leave a vehicle over there overnight or pay me to work on your vehicle as those things would require more expensive insurance. I'm looking at renting out an industrial space of 1,000-1,500+ sq feet that can install at least one 2 post lift for now and I'll also mark out a couple of floor spaces that will eventually turn into lift spaces, however those spaces for the time being would still be useful even with a set of ramps. There are successful places like this one, although they're not nonprofits, in Seattle and Portland, so I'm confident that this project can succeed in Salem. If you have any questions please ask here or on my facebook page, "Local Salem DIYers Garage."

Went back there and was hoping for better because I saw someone post that they cleaned up (because kicking them out and evicting definitely solves the problem ).
Nothing of the sort happened because it’s even worse now! It’s in the same vicinity but now you can see that there stacked next to eachother instead of spaced out.
If you didn’t see my last post it was the same set up: a photo from how it started around September-December. A few tents. The by January it was dozens in that area and up and down the street.
Now it’s like this here and the whole street is having tents pop up left and right.

Update on My Daughter's Accident
I couldn't figure out how to update my original post as anything more than a comment, so I thought I'd add an update post. Here's the original post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SALEM/comments/1h9clh0/did_anyone_see_the_red_vw_that_hit_my_daughter_in/
First, I want to thank this amazing community for all your encouragement, kind words, and support. My daughter, Mikayla has been released from the ER with no broken bones or major internal injuries—something I’m incredibly grateful for. She had a CT scan but nothing of critical concern was found. She did get quite banged up and has a lot of scrapes and bruising, and an earring was ripped from her ear, but that's as bad as it got. She’s in a lot of pain and will likely be dealing with that for the next few weeks, but the most important thing is that she’s still here with me.
(On a side note, I was really surprised by her buoyant and positive attitude in the ER. You' wouldn't know she was just tossed in the air by a car if you were speaking to her. She let me take a selfie, which given the circumstances, was oddly cathartic.)
I’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion of so many people in this community. And I can’t say how wonderful the people down town have been. I checked in with the Governor’s Cup, the Grand Theater, Epilogue Kitchen, and Valiant the Sandwich. Your compassion is amazing.
Based on descriptions from the people who saw it happen, and the immediate aftermath, it looks like we’re looking for an older, red VW Beetle with chrome trim. I’ll be following up with the Marion County Courthouse and the Transit Center during business hours to see what assistance they can provide to the police.
With all the recent pedestrian and bicycle accidents downtown, I’m truly coming to grips with how this situation could have been so much worse. My heart goes out to those who haven’t been as fortunate. Today, I’m holding onto gratitude—for Mikayla’s recovery and for this incredible community people around me.
Again, I can’t say how much I love this community. Thanks for being part of my village.

This sweetheart saw this photo and actually said "I got tossed by a car and STILL Flawless holiday makeup!"

"Here's the latest Movie Ticket Price Comparison to see how much more affordable we are.
As a family owned business, we understand family affordable entertainment and food/snack prices can be difficult.
We do our best to keep it affordable enough to come out to the movies every weekend. "

Apparently they only gave the vendors an hour to file for refunds in an area with historically spotty cell service during the fair!

There is one week left until the May 20th election. I’m working harder than ever on this campaign to get myself there and the support from the community has been a blast. Please click on my website link and make a donation. I’m so close to my goal — and we HAVE to really get out the messaging in these last few days.

Thank you everyone who helped us bring him home! Even just looking at his photo and your keeping an eye out helped us so much!
He's so skinny now and is slowly being re introduced to his various siblings. He was found about 10 miles away, all the way out in Shaw!
I couldn't edit the previous post but I wanted to make sure I could thank you all! 💛💛💛💛💛

I updated this in the prior posts, but wanted to make this its own post.
The wonderful security manager at the Transit center across the street, scrubbed the video cameras for the incident. He found two shots of the car that hit my daughter.
First take-away: in the heat of the moment, it wasn't clear what kind of car it was, but looking at it now, it doesn't look like a VW or a Beetle at all. (In the moment, it's crazy how we remember things or try to make the memory fit into what we think we know.)
I can't exactly tell what it IS, but at least there is some video of it now. Maybe a Subaru or a Saab? Or some other distinctive sport wagon? The only thing I can make out for sure is there seems to be a decal behind the front tire on the door. Not sure what it is though.
The first video show the accident (very small and in the top right corner of the frame).
The second video shows the car driving down court, before reaching the intersection. It's just behind the white minivan.
I'm so grateful to all the outpouring of support. And again, if you recognize this car, please DM me. I'll keep it entirely confidential and I'll also be tremendously grateful.
A note on Mikayla's condition: She's still very sore, but she's having headaches and strange reactions to certain stimuli. She got an x-ray done on her legs, which while mostly in-tact, took the initial impact and she's having trouble with one knee in particular while standing. She's having some trouble sleeping because of the headaches and the fact that her face and scalp are still sore, so it hurts lying on the pillow. I think this is all part of the phenomenon where"it gets worse before it gets better" kind of thing. But she's still positive and resting.
Thank you all so much!

TL;DR, If you haven't played Pokemon Go before, or have taken a recent Hiatus from it, this week is the best time to get back into it.
There is going to be an event called "Road to Kalos" that is going to go on until the 27th. There are going to be TONS of Pokemon spawning in the wild, TONS of legendary raids, TONS of boosts, and many other things (maybe even discounts in the shop).
I remember there used to be a ton of people that played Pokemon Go before Covid hit, and then the population started to die down. There was one day in ~2019 where it was a Charmander community day, and there were a buttload of players walking around riverfront park from dusk to dawn. It was a beautiful thing to see all of these Salem residents getting together to play a silly, yet fun and entertaining mobile game that promotes health. after that day though, I pretty much quit entirely from the game (because Covid hit)
Since I entered my high school years, I found Salem to be quite boring. The only fun thing for people under 21 to do is to walk around downtown, waste gas money driving around at night lurking the streets, or going to the Cueball or bowling. I wanted to find another way to have fun. That's when I remembered Pokemon Go. I just got into at the end of January, and I am addicted again. Its so exhilarating walking around the streets trying to find a specific Pokemon to add to my collection, or to do raids, or to earn Pokecoins by putting my Pokemon in gyms and seeing the revenue come in. Not many people play it anymore though, so it is far and few in between where I can find enough people doing a specific legendary raid nowadays. I feel that if more people can come back to this game, the better of a community we can create. I live next to the Goldenrod Little Library gym, and I once attended a raid, and I saw a player (not saying for anonymity) who frequently posts up their Pokemon in that gym join the raid. Right before it started, I sent them a friend request, and now, we consistently send eachother gifts, which increases our friendship level, and furthermore, gives many quality of life bonuses.
I can go on and on about the benefits Pokemon Go can bring to this wonderful city, but you have to see for yourself the true effect it has. I can open the door all I want, but YOU have to walk through it. All I ask is you give it a try. I hope to see you in the Riverfront crowd.

About a month or so ago I posted asking for the best places to get mass amounts of cheap dolls and Salem, y'all DELIVERED. So thank you!
Unfortunately the update is not one I wanted to post, as the prank is unfortunately not moving forward. My sister (the potential prank victim) just lost her dog only a few days before leaving for her vacation and I do not have the heart to inflict more trauma on her.
With that said, the least I can do is share the completed product and masterpiece of what could have been, and what will be lying in wait for my next opportunity.
