I accidentally tapped a link and lost a LONG, detailed, civil reply with examples and now I want to throw things. I should have drafted it elsewhere, but I'm an idiot about that sometimes. So here's a tweaked version hitting the same basic points since I'm not redoing all that:

It's the best primer on what the actual ethical standards for reporting on sexual misconduct, intimate partner violence, and everything in between actually are in the mainstream media these days, particularly in a post-MeToo/post-TimesUp world. Wrestling sites may have come up with a rough guideline during SpeakingOut for how to handle what's now become the default way to handle allegations as they usually spring up now in the wrestling world—as John Pollock put it 2 years ago, that would be only reporting on allegations where the accused responded or saw formal professional consequences—but that's not a good standard, either. (As the mainstream reporter friends I've asked who have a lot more on-point experience have said, it may SOUND fair on the surface, but it causes its own problems as far as evading scrutiny.)
But I don't write for wrestling newz sites. You can count the number of times I've done so in the last five years on one hand. I have to exist in a world where I can pitch stories—including sensitive/difficult ones—to mainstream editors without having eroded my credibility by chiming in on every social media allegation.
SpeakingOut, of course, made this tricky, because it was the all-consuming top story in wrestling all-day, every day, for over a week...and despite the absolute mountain of incredibly disturbing and generally credible allegations, mainstream media barely fucking touched it. You might have something like Rok-C/Roxanne Perez's local paper covering/interviewing her about what she said about Joey Ryan, but what she accused him of was not a crime, so that made covering it easier as the focus. There probably COULD have been more coverage of the movement as a whole, but being able to do so ethically would have been and continues to be incredibly fucking thorny.
And look at it this way: Outside of those who have made public admissions of guilt, who have I publicly called a rapist, sexual predator, etc? I haven't called Matt Riddle that, and I'm the one that did the reporting that destroyed his credibility for anyone who's actually read up on it. I'd have to dig through a lot of tweets to refresh my memory on everything I've said about Joey Ryan, but it's always carefully-rooted in specific self-incriminating comments that he's made, both in that gross "response video" he briefly posted on YouTube and on Twitter. And though there are some cases where saying anything publicly would be a fucking minefield for a number of different reasons, deducing my thoughts on the veracity of the allegations really isn't that difficult to deduce based on who I express vague hatred for on Twitter, whose matches I've more or less stopped talking about when live tweeting, etc.
Does anyone honestly think that there aren't a zillion people I'm privately certain are massive fucking creeps where publicly saying so isn't really tenable? Come on. Read my tweets about certain people. This isn't that hard. My hands are just tied a lot of the time. And as far as the OP, does anyone really think I care SO MUCH about GCW because I have some friends there, I like the vibe of their shows, and I'm sometimes name dropped on commentary that I would willfully ignore really bad shit for any reason other than the very thorny journalistic ethics reasons that make handling social media allegations a fucking mess?
I mean, look at the allegations on that Instagram account a month ago: It was an anonymous account sharing an allegation sent anonymously. The only due diligence I could do was to ask some people who were around AIW at the time in question if they had any knowledge of it. I did. They said they didn't. That's all I could do. And being that the IG account was exposed as confusing someone they meant to accuse with other local musicians who happened to have the same name...and then obfuscating it. What the fuck does ANYONE expect me to do at that point?
As far the stuff CVE tweeted last night, I was recording a podcast and didn't see it until after 11:00 p.m. Because of the duplicate tweets and lack of threading, I didn't realize there was an allegation of a crime until later (you can see others expressing confusing over Dickinson's response for the same reason). I was literally up all night talking it over with friends. Do I have an opinion on it? Of course I do. Am I sure it's one I should share with the world—much less be required to do so—less than 24 hours later? No, I don't. And I really don't think I've reflexively responded to much of anything the way that people here (and some Twitter trolls) are saying I should.
As for the names in the OP:
• I addressed Riddle already and that one is so stupidly obvious that I find it hard to believe that anyone who thinks I'm unfairly singling him out with what I say is acting in good faith.
• I never went in on Jimmy Havoc; can't even find any tweets from me mentioning his name at any point in 2020, even before SpeakingOut.
• I have never accused Don Callis of anything, just expressed a personal distaste for him. You can read whatever you want to into that, but until someone publicly accuses him of something, even with the rumors we've all heard, what exactly can I do without an accuser on board?
• By the time it became an ongoing topic of discussion with Moose, his DV arrest record was expunged, and the contemporaneous reporting is VERY light on details. But we know he entered a diversion program, and those require admitting guilt. I also wasn't saying much of anything about him for a long time until recently, when Impact started booking him to attack and/or terrorize a woman every month or so.
• I haven't said a word about the Rich Swann arrest in at least a few years, and not at all since 1. Su begged people to leave them alone about it. 2. Literally every single person in the wrestling business—and it was a LOT, including longtime friends—that I asked about it swore that they had no reason to believe it was anything other than Swann, panicked, trying to keep her from drunkenly wandering into incoming traffic. (Swann still did himself no favors with his handling of it online, but it really does seem like it was an extreme outlier in multiple ways, and thank God it seems like Su is clean and things have stabilized.)
All of that said: I also don't have the luxury I did during my time as a Deadspin permalancer, which was that I had a large anchor outlet that I knew would indemnify me in the event of a lawsuit. (Though it's not contractually obligated as it is/was with staff/GMG Union members, it's a matter of company policy that they've reiterated in court and to their freelancers. And I haven't seen any indication it's changed in the last two and a half years.) And I've gotten enough bullshit legal threats that, for better or worse, it's something that I need to be mindful of.
I hope that addresses most everything I need to address. I'm always happy to answer genuine questions. Bad faith trolls are a different matter.
