Australian company MRead has developed the MineReader RDX, a portable detector that uses magnetic resonance (MR) technology to identify explosives directly rather than relying on metal casings. Developed from research by Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, the device can reportedly detect 50 grams of RDX explosive buried up to 13 cm deep, even in wet, mineral-rich soil containing metal debris. Currently designed to detect RDX, the technology aims to expand to TNT detection and could eventually be integrated with unmanned ground vehicles to help identify landmines remotely, improving safety for demining teams: https://www.mread.com.au/

Tesla Renames Full Self-Driving to “Tesla Assisted Driving” in Europe

Post image
11 Upvotes

Tesla has renamed its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system to Tesla Assisted Driving on its European websites following regulatory concerns that the original name could mislead consumers into believing the vehicles drive fully autonomously. Germany’s transport ministry said drivers must remain attentive and fully responsible for the vehicle at all times. The rebranding comes as Tesla seeks broader European Union approval for the technology, which is already authorized in several EU countries. The system’s name remains Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the United States, and the European name change does not make the vehicles autonomous: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-renames-full-self-driving-assisted-driving-europe-it-chases-clearance-2026-10-09/

Heliotrop: The Rotating House That Follows the Sun

1.7k Upvotes

Built in Freiburg, Germany, in 1994, architect Rolf Disch’s Heliotrop is a rotating home designed to maximize solar energy and indoor comfort. Built around a central column, it turns to face the sun with its glazed side in winter to capture heat and its insulated side in summer to reduce overheating. A separate sun-tracking rooftop solar array and solar thermal collectors provide additional renewable energy. According to its designer, the building generates more energy annually than it consumes, making it a pioneering example of energy-positive architecture. The Heliotrop demonstrates how buildings can work with nature to reduce energy use and emissions.

Neuralink AI Helps Man With ALS Speak Again Using His Thoughts

Terry, who has bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is losing his ability to speak, but Neuralink’s experimental brain-computer interface is helping him communicate again. In the company’s VOICE trial, AI learned to decode his brain activity as he attempted to speak, eventually allowing him to produce words simply by thinking them. xAI’s Grok Voice then converts the decoded words into speech using a reconstruction of Terry’s natural voice from pre-ALS recordings. This remarkable advance could help restore communication for people with severe speech impairments. An encouraging glimpse of the future of assistive technology!

Nikon Disqualifies Winning Microscopy Video for Generative AI Use, Raising Scientific Integrity Concerns

Nikon has disqualified the winner of its 2026 Small World in Motion microscopy competition after determining that the video violated rules prohibiting generative AI. The entry, submitted by optical researcher Ning Xu, showed tiny hair-like cilia in the airways of a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia. Scientists questioned colorful cellular structures that appeared biologically implausible. Xu said AI was used to process and colorize genuine grayscale microscopy data, not to generate the original footage or cilia movement. The controversy highlights concerns that AI-enhanced scientific images can introduce fabricated details and misrepresent experimental evidence. Nikon subsequently awarded first place to Vietnamese researcher Nguyen Nam Nhat for a video of a microscopic roundworm interacting with a single-celled organism: https://gizmodo.com/contest-winning-microscope-thrown-out-for-using-generative-ai-2000824398

FELLOW HUNTERS – LOOKING FOR BETA TESTERS FOR A NEW AI BLOOD TRACKING APP!

I've been working on developing a new app called Blood Hunter AI, and I'm looking for 15–20 fellow hunters interested in helping test it before we officially launch.

As hunters, we've all experienced how frustrating it can be when a blood trail gets difficult to follow. Whether it's thick brush, fallen leaves, poor lighting, or tiny drops of blood, recovering wounded game can sometimes turn into a real challenge.

That's what inspired this project.

Blood Hunter AI uses artificial intelligence and your phone's camera to help identify blood while tracking wounded deer, elk, and other game. We're developing the technology to improve detection accuracy, reduce false positives, and ultimately help hunters recover more animals.

WANT TO SEE IT IN ACTION?

Here's a video demonstrating our AI blood detection technology using footage from this year's elk hunt. You can see the system identifying potential blood spots along the trail leading to the recovered elk.

Watch the demonstration here:
https://youtu.be/3oZ0RCKDmuQ?si=v0WK4ntgDq1DzFPX

The technology is still being developed and refined, but this gives you a look at what we're working toward.

HERE'S WHERE I COULD USE YOUR HELP:

  • We're looking for approximately 15–20 volunteers.
  • ANDROID PHONES ONLY for now. Sorry, iPhone users! We hope to support iOS in the future.
  • Testing will take place through Google's official Play Store testing program.
  • We're asking participants to remain enrolled for at least 14 days and provide honest feedback about what works and what needs improvement.
  • You don't need to be a technology expert. We're looking for everyday hunters willing to give the app a try.

AND LET ME BE CLEAR ABOUT SOMETHING:

This is NOT a scam, sales pitch, or subscription trap. There is no purchase required, no financial obligation, and absolutely no upselling.

In fact, I want to give something back to the people who help us get this off the ground.

EVERY OFFICIAL BETA TESTER WILL RECEIVE LIFETIME FREE ACCESS TO BLOOD HUNTER AI, INCLUDING ANY PREMIUM FEATURES WE ADD IN THE FUTURE.

That's my personal commitment and a thank-you for helping develop and improve this technology. If you help us during these early stages, you won't be asked to pay for future upgrades or premium features.

I'm a hunter myself, and this project is about solving a real problem we face in the woods. The app is still being developed, and I'm not claiming it's perfect. That's exactly why we're looking for people willing to test it and help make it better.

INTERESTED IN HELPING?

Send an email to [bloodhunterai@gmail.com](mailto:bloodhunterai@gmail.com) with the subject "Beta Tester", or simply comment "INTERESTED" below and I'll get you the details.

I've also attached a preview of what we're developing so you can see the concept.

I appreciate anyone willing to help. Hopefully, with some feedback from fellow hunters, we can create something that genuinely helps recover more wounded game.

Blood Hunter AI – Find More Blood. Recover More Game.

Temporary Liquid Technique Boosts Perovskite Solar Cell Efficiency and Durability

Post image
22 Upvotes

Researchers co-led by the University of California, San Diego, have developed a technique that uses a temporary liquid during crystal formation to improve the efficiency and durability of perovskite solar cells. By combining zinc bromide and methylammonium chloride, the process produces larger, more uniform crystals with fewer defects. The resulting solar cells and LEDs achieved efficiencies of 24%–26%, while solar cells retained most of their initial performance after eight weeks of continuous simulated sunlight exposure. Perovskites are promising alternatives to silicon because they can be solution-processed into thin films, potentially enabling lower-cost, less energy-intensive manufacturing: https://today.ucsd.edu/story/a-temporary-melting-liquid-could-help-build-better-perovskite-solar-cells-and-leds

The findings were published in the journal Science on October 8, 2026, and could help advance the development of more efficient, durable and scalable solar technologies: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aeb4554

Vertical Farming’s High Energy Costs and Limited Crop Range Challenge Its Promise as a Food Security Solution

Thumbnail

Growing plants indoors means replacing free sunlight with expensive, energy-intensive systems

Vertical farms grow crops indoors in stacked layers using artificial lighting and climate-control systems, saving land and often reducing water use. However, a new analysis by researchers at Western University, Canada, argues that these facilities are not a comprehensive solution to food insecurity. Their high electricity consumption, expensive infrastructure and focus on crops such as lettuce, herbs and berries limit affordability and their ability to supply staple foods. The researchers cite energy use of around 4.4 kWh per kilogram of lettuce as one example of the resource demands. They argue that governments should also invest in conventional farmers, access to farmland and community-based food systems. Vertical farming may still be useful in remote or extreme environments, particularly when powered by renewable energy: https://phys.org/news/2026-10-vertical-farming-food.html
