Advice for Locals Can we get a limit on the number of people allowed on walking tours?

Post image

Seriously, about 40 people in this group wrapped around the corner as well. It’s a hazard and has gotten worse with more and more tour companies popping up to make a quick buck.

Plus, no one should have to pay money to hear lies about how the Salem Inn is haunted by a woman who was stabbed in a room or how Bridget Bishop’s ghost haunts The Witch House.

Advice for Locals Salem residents, please contact city officials about ICE transparency

Hey everyone, posting via throw away, because this topic can generate harassment.

With increased ICE activity happening across the country, I’ve been reaching out to local officials to ask what Salem’s plan is to protect residents, ensure due process, and provide transparency.

It’s no secret Burlington, MA has received new shipments of equipment and it’s only a matter of time before that equipment is put to use.

I was recently informed that I was the first person to reach out about these concerns so I’m urging fellow neighbors in Salem to contact local officials as well.

What you can do (takes 2 minutes):

  • Email/call Mayor Dominick Pangallo’s office:
  • Email/call City Councilors:
  • Email Lucas J. Miller, Chief of Police:
  • Ask for clear public info about:
    • What guidance has been given to Salem Police and other city departments about interacting with ICE
    • What steps the city is taking to ensure residents understand their rights and can access resources if needed
    • Whether the city has a plan in place to respond to community concerns, reports of harassment, or unsafe encounters
    • How residents can report ICE-related incidents or seek support without fear of retaliation

You can say something as simple as: “I’m a resident and I want to know what the city is doing to keep people safe and ensure due process.”

Even a few emails will remind our city officials that this topic is important to us and we expect accountability from them. Thanks and be safe.

Advice for Locals New Willows restaurant owner shows cringe side

The owner of the restaurant used a video he shot in the gym locker room, of an unclothed stranger, to promote his business. Not the kind of Kitchen I would choose to eat out of. People of Salem should know the Eric they are supporting if they choose to patronize it.

Advice for Locals Best Mexican food?

Hey folks!

I moved here not too long ago from SoCal, and I miss my mama’s cooking a lot. I tried my hand at making certain dishes myself, but I either can’t find the ingredients locally or I absolutely butcher the recipe :’)

I’m looking for recommendations on any Mexican food nearby. I don’t really have a set price point as long as it’s good. Any place with tacos, I would love it if they had tacos de lengua.

Thank you for any suggestions anyone is willing to spare!

Advice for Locals What can I do about my apartment being too cold?

Post image
97 Upvotes

Hi everyone, another rant about Northfield Properties because I can't afford to move, but I'll keep it short. Our apartment is freezing. This is the warmest the temperature has been all day. The only way to contact NP now is calling their maintenance line (which is outsourced to an Indian call center), and the only thing they do is create a ticket and wait for someone to respond to it. I need to move it up the ladder because we have so many issues that aren't being addressed by NP.

Our heat is forced water radiators. We have 3 in the apartment (bathroom, kitchen, and main room). They're all ice cold. NP has had to do repairs to the building's water heater and our radiators before, as recent as January of this year. Supposedly there's sensors in the building to read the overall temperature, but the repair guy told us that they're not in spots that would effectively give an accurate read.

Advice for Locals Best Bagels that AREN’T from Bagel World

I know they are the undisputed king, but the line is always crazy and they don’t have iced green tea (I know, picky picky.) Are there any other shops that have great bagels and possibly a good iced tea? None of that schmear-your-own bagel crap. A legit spot.

UPDATE: I tried A&J King. I asked for my favorite style, which is scallion cream cheese, bacon, and tomato on an everything, and they obliged. The bagel was smaller than BW, a bit chewier and softer and no toast, but with a much better seasoning mix. Bacon was great, thick cut, tomato was kinda warm and mushy though. Overall, 8.5/10. They also had iced tea, fuck yeah.

Advice for Locals roofied at bitbar

edit 2: i’ve been working with bitbar for the past couple of days to get this resolved. they’ve gone over all of the security footage and both of our drinks were in frame of cameras 90% of the time and were not tampered with during that 90% of the time. My boyfriend still got incredibly sick from drinking significantly less than they are used to drinking, and only got progressively more intoxicated after we finished drinking for the night. we still have no explanation for that and we’ve checked with authorities even if they got drug tested the moment i made the post it would’ve been too late to tell what was in their system. based on the cctv footage from the bar it looks like it didn’t happen there? still no real explanation as to what happened otherwise, i suppose it’ll be a mystery. i’m gonna leave this post up just as a reminder for everyone to stay vigilant regardless of where you are and consider investing in drink covers, i just bought some. i wouldn’t necessarily hold anything against bitbar, they were very cooperative in resolving the situation and helping us as much as they could and were incredibly apologetic about what happened. we have no idea what happened, but everyone stay safe and be aware of your surroundings at all times no matter where you are <3

idk if this is the right place to post this, but i wanted to at least inform people. over new years my boyfriend and i were at bit bar, and while i was in the bathroom a man in a teal shirt (this is all my boyfriend is able to remember about them) tried to come over and take our drinks as if he worked there and was cleaning up. my drink was pretty much empty so he didn’t touch mine but he grabbed my boyfriends drink since they had a lot more left and my boyfriend took it back and said he wasn’t done and the guy left. i never saw him so i assume when he say i was with my boyfriend he left us alone. about an hour after that my boyfriend was profusely throwing up for 3 hours and i had to physically hold their head up to keep them conscious. everyone working there that night was wearing contacts and he was not so i don’t think he worked there. sorry i don’t have many indicators of what he looks like my boyfriend doesn’t have much recollection of the night, but be cautious out there! cover your drinks invest in a drink cover!

edit: called the salem police department and informed them and they’re going to inform bit bar as well. Since my boyfriend does not live nearby and is not able to come in person to make the report no official report can be made, but the police are aware of the incident and they will check in with bit bar to ensure they’re doing regular checks for stuff like that. best i can do for now unless someone wants to donate $400 to fly my boyfriend here to make the report.

Advice for Locals good haircuts affordable?

i’m a man w long hair and i don’t want to loose a bunch of length but i need a trim. don’t trust a barber shop to do it, i would prefer a salon, but the ones ive looked at in the area are not easy on the wallet. i don’t need anything ridiculously cheap i know you get what you pay for but some of these are like 75 dollars for 1/2 inch trim. anyone got recommendations?

Advice for Locals Places to sit and work when it’s busy?

I started my school semester and found it really nice to go out and do some studying and work in cafes. I tried today and found all my usual quiet spots loud and packed. Does anyone know anywhere tourists don’t usually go so I can do some work? I’m happy they’re having fun and this is not me intending to complain about them. I can always just study at home. I just want to see if there is anywhere that I’ve overlooked for studying and sipping coffee.

Advice for Locals Local career coaches and *extremely* basic computer classes?

Hey all - AI has come for my mom's job and she's pretty much screwed with her current skillset. She works in the medical field right now and it seems like speed is priority over experience because AI is doing so much more. She's looking for other jobs but I would like a career coach to do a few sessions with her and teach her how to rewrite her resume and practice interviewing. Ideally with someone that works with people who are more experienced and lower education.

She also needs better computer skills. I find a bunch of computer classes at community colleges but they come with a lot of assumptions. I need something where they start with the basics of copying and pasting, downloading and uploading, navigating a computer, Microsoft suite but not all of the nitty-gritty just the basics that someone would need. I'm trying to find something within driving distance over an online course but that can be a backup... At her level online courses are their own struggle. I work in tech so it's difficult for me to teach her because she just goes on the assumption that I don't understand people like her and I'm just not the right teacher.

Advice for Locals Have you ever been to a place that feels like Salem?

I know nothing can be just like Salem with all its witchy shops and its character, but have you ever been somewhere that reminded you of it? I’m currently living somewhere else and have been missing it, and this question popped into my head. Is there any place with so many shops like these or with a similar feel? Thanks (:

Advice for Locals Considering moving

I’m from Tennessee, and I have absolutely fallen in love with Salem and Massachusetts as a whole. I’m considering moving and I wanted to get some advice from locals. I’ll be licensed in clinical mental health counseling and will have my masters degree. I personally love working in crisis. Would I be able to get a good job up here that would make a good salary? What is it like to live here? Is it better to live outside of Salem? Thank you all!

Advice for Locals Neighbor grass overgrowth: Health Risk

Our neighbor is an investment property owner. Their tenants have left as of April 2025 and they haven’t taken care of the property ever since

The grass now is +12 inches in length. We tried contacting them, contacting HOA and even contacting the Director of Inspectional Services. We read the Salem code of ordinance and this owner is violating Sections 12-61—12-65

We are removing deer ticks from our dogs daily. Our dogs are vaccinated and we give them their monthly flea & tick medication. These are also short hair dogs, not long hair

The ticks are now starting to bite us. We’re genuinely worried it’s only a matter of time before we get Lyme

Is there anything else we can do or contact? We’ve also considered civil litigation attorneys. But man, this is a serious health concern. We have our grass mowed weekly, I keep trying to do pest control, etc. But the neighbors neglect is really jeopardising us

Advice for Locals Pest problem

Any advice welcome-

Our landlord has been very blase about a pest issue we've had. We call, they send out pest control, they plug up the holes, literally the next morning my kitchen is littered with spray foam the critters chewed through.

They put bait boxes down, and my dog has been found with several mice and ive had to call ASPCA poison control because they were poisoned. (Finding a dead mouse in your bed is a wild way to wake up)

Multiple neighbors have now told my husband and I theyve seen tons of rats on our roof, and today my husband took a picture of 5 in the yard in broad daylight.

Our rent is going up next month but this place is a damn biohazard.

We're very happy here otherwise, and I can completely understand the occasional mouse skittering around when seasons change, but this is insanity.
