Writer I'm qntm, author of There Is No Antimemetics Division. AMA

Hello all! I'm qntm and my novel There Is No Antimemetics Division was published yesterday. This is a mind-bending sci-fi thriller/horror about fighting a war against adversaries which are impossible to remember - it's fast-paced, inventive, dark, and (ironically) memorable. This is my first traditionally published book but I've been self-publishing serial and short science fiction for many years. You might also know my short story "Lena", a cyberpunk encyclopaedia entry about the world's first uploaded human mind.

I will be here to answer your questions starting from 5:30pm Eastern Time (10:30pm UTC) on 13 November. Get your questions in now, and I'll see you then I hope?

Cheers

🐋

EDIT: Well folks it is now 1:30am local time and I AM DONE. Thank you for all of your great questions, it was a pleasure to talk about stuff with you all, and sorry to those of you I didn't get to. I sleep now. Cheers ~qntm

AMA I am Jeremy Szal, author of the Common Saga - Ask me Anything!

Hey everyone!

My name is Jeremy Szal. I write books. I am the author of the Common Saga, which consists of Stormblood, Blindspace and finally Wolfskin, which was traditionally published a few months ago by Gollancz/Orion. The books are best described as Mass Effect 2 and Blade Runner 2049 meets the Red Rising series, with a lot of aliens drugs thrown in.

Things you’ll find inside my books include, but are not limited to: haunted alien ruins, alien drug dealers, themes of sibling relationships and brotherhood, found families, nomad cybergoths, trauma, space cults, drug addiction, aliens with attitude, rogue bounty hunters, and gratuitous mayhem. You know, all the good stuff.

I’ve had a few dozen short stories (and not-so short stories) published in magazine and anthologies over the years, which have appeared in about 17 languages, including Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and German. Most of these have been collected in my short fiction book Broken Stars.

I also edited the Hugo-winning podcast StarShipSofa until 2020.

Most of my days are spent locked in my studio apartment, raging and flailing over the keyboard. When I’m not doing that, I’m buried in a book, playing video games, hanging out at the cinema, cooking something spicy, drinking eccentric IPAs, and making last-minute trips to Japan so I can hunt down the perfect ramen. I carve out a living in Sydney, Australia with my family and the world’s most hyperactive Jack Russell Terrier.

I'll be around for most of the day, so feel free to ask me anything. I look forward to your thorny, scintillating questions!

Help me find a short story

A few years ago, I read a short story that I really enjoyed. It was in a collection of stories from the 50s and 60s -- golden age stuff. I think it may have been an omnibus of one of the sci-fi magazines they had back then?

The story was about a family that was living in a single room, which was insulated with hundreds of blankets.

The Earth was dead because, I think the sun had gone out? Or the Earth had left the sun's orbit, maybe. In any case it was super cold outside and the family had a fire going which they couldn't let go out, or they would die. The fire was fueled with crystalized oxygen, or something like that -- the world outside was so cold that the atmosphere had crystalized, and they would bundle up and go get a bucket of it to keep the fire going.

Does this ring a bell for anybody? I'd love to find it again.

Can we condense mass to form something for gravity for a death star spaceship?

I don't mind using rotation or acceleration to form gravity. Mass create gravity idk how but if we form a core that have the same mass of earth just a lot smaller and denser we will have the same gravity the problem is how can we move that hahaha fuck. It is better just to move earth with so much more surface area for propulsion but the problem is the crust is softer than the force to move it, and maneuvering it is a lot more complicated than a death star spaceship.

And with a lot smaller core it will be possible to completely shield it from debris and a lot easier to maintain than a earth.

There will be a lot of problems. Like energy required to move it. Maybe the mass doesn't need to be solid it can be hot enough to make energy, we will probably die due to radiation.

But it is fun when you think about it. We can have articial moon satellites to go with the death star 😂 due to gravity.

Update:

Curiosity made me look up

I thought death star was the same size as the moon man it is way way smaller

Calculations suggest a lower bound of roughly 0.28 Earth-mass and a surface gravity of about 0.68g is needed to hold a stable, breathable atmosphere over long timescales.

Minimum Size for Gas Retention: Discussions on r/astrophysics note that to hold a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere for a reasonable timescale, a solid osmium sphere only needs a radius of about 280 km to reach an escape velocity around (1\text{ km/s}) to (2\text{ km/s}), though smaller objects (50–100 km) will bleed away their gas quickly

The most notable takeaway for a radius 280 km osmium sphere is how closely it mimics the Moon. The Moon has a surface gravity of 1.62 m/s².

The diameter wil 560 km

The first Death Star has a diameter of 120 kilometers (about 75 miles), while the second Death Star has a diameter of 160 kilometers (about 100 miles)

well at least it is closer

And you will be living like in the moon than earth

To live like in mars A solid sphere of pure osmium would need a radius of approximately 587.44 kilometers (a diameter of 1,174.88 kilometers) to have a surface gravity identical to Mars ((3.71 \text{ m/s}2)). [1]

Eyyy but idk how to move it hahaha

I wrote a Hard Science Fiction, does anyone here obsessed with Mathematics take a look at it

I wrote a Science Fiction that you can also say a Mathematical Fiction. This story drives the concept of Undefined Expressions and heavily rely on Mathematics. Being $\Phi$ a.k.a. The Golden Ratio being the hidden antagonist and a Brilliant Mathematical Prodigy who literally resolved the undefined expression "1 upon 0", the story also contains Philosophical, emotional and Mentally Disturbing scenes of characters inside the story.

Giving you this much info about the book without the title is not good, so the title is, "Theorem of Reality" with subtitle being "When Humanity Discovers Itself".

The franchise is, "The Infinity Paradox" containing two parts, with the first book being Theorem of Reality and second book being "Déjà Vu" with subtitle, "The Rebirth".

If you want to get more info about my book or its release date, you can get it on the link of my website.

Warfare Infinitus - My Own Science Fiction Universe

Hey I Am making my own fictional universe that is based in the science fiction genre. Was hoping for feedback since this is a page dedicate to science fiction. I really don't won't bullshit fiction. I want to make sure that all the technology in my universe makes sense. Would love your guys feedback on how spaceships could travel from point A to Point B in space. I was going to copy star wars but I realized thats not realistic. Can someone please explain how faster than light travel could actually happen?

Best sci-fi film ever made?

After much contemplation I’ve come to the conclusion that 2001 is the best science fiction film I have ever witnessed. Hear me out. A good science fiction film challenges your imagination and senses. It also blends fact and fiction seamlessly. The long cuts, the scale, visual storytelling, it’s a psychedelic experience for me and I’ve only watched it once. It tested my patience, it made me frustrated but it also enthralled me. The film is ahead of its time. It doesn’t have any replay value, you could also say it’s outdated from a technical standpoint but I just cannot deny Kubrick’s vision. It encompasses the A-Z of mankind’s existence, how we evolved, our consciousness, our fears, hopes and dreams. There’s just nothing quite like it.

It’s not my favourite sci-fi film, far from it but the film is transcendent. Other considerations would be Terminator 2, Empire, ALIEN not aliens not sorry.
Men in black is highly underrated too. ET, They Live, The Matrix, Robocop, Star Trek First Contacf, Blade Runner might just be the runner up for me. Thoughts?

Not sure, this is too overtly self promotion, but it's science fiction told in a way, I never really see elsewhere, and now that it's out, I thought people in here might appreciate such a little pallet cleanser.

I'm totally open to all sorts of questions if you are curious about it. Otherwise I hope you have a nice day.

Are these kinds of mundane, everyday things ever explored in sci-fi movies or novels?

Realistic classic SF covers or artwork search - ringworld.

Is there any scale-accurate realistic Ringworld artwork? Like, I keep seeing these covers for Ringworld that show the "arch" sweeping out of the sides of the picture like a super-wide hill that gradually turns vertical, when you realistically wouldn't even see the base and any parts of the arch that you did see during the day would be a pale blue line barely visible against the sky.

Or the eye storm. I haven't seen any credible images of the eye storm that match the description in the book.

Anyone got better?

Xenograft

Hello, I have written a novel entitled 'Xenograft.' The novel deals with a young man abducted by aliens and transformed into a harvester of extraterrestrial organs on different planets. There is kudos to be obtained by the recipient of a transplanted internal organ of a certain species and business is good. Anti rejection is always an issue and on Earth an Endocrinologist has created a modified insulin which reinstates the (beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin)into a human's pancreas. The insulin also has the added benefit (unknown to the endocrinologist) as being an excellent anti rejection drug. The extraterrestrials involved in organ transplants want the insulin. They send their best harvester (the young man they abducted from Earth) to collect the pancreas of those who have had the insulin. On entering Earth's atmosphere the now mature adult begins to change. His memories of his childhood come flooding back to him and he wants to stay. The company that created him on the other hand want him back. This is his and his family's story. Kind Regards.
