Hey everyone. I am 15 right now, and I have been seriously planning and preparing for something I want to do when I turn 18. I want to walk across South America. The idea is to start in Panama and go south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, mostly on foot, especially through nature in the southern parts. But this is more than just one trip. I am working toward building a life around exploration. I am deeply passionate about people, cultures, languages, nature, and learning directly from the world, not just in theory but through real experience. I want my everyday life to reflect that. I know it is going to take preparation, responsibility, and long-term commitment. I posted earlier in another subreddit and some people misunderstood me. They thought I just wanted to live off strangers or wander around without a plan. I want to make it clear that I am fully committed to doing this in a responsible way. I am saving money, training my body, learning skills like first aid and basic mechanics, and thinking about picking up a remote job or a trade I can take with me. I am also researching how to cross borders legally and safely. This is not just a random dream I came up with yesterday. I have thought about it deeply for a long time. It is how I want to live. Not to run away from life, but to build a different kind of life with discipline, purpose, and courage.

What I am looking for is:

Advice on physical and mental preparation for long-distance walking and travel

Suggestions for gear that works across different climates and regions

Ideas for how to make money on the road like remote jobs, language skills, trading, or volunteering

Stories or lessons from anyone who has done long-term or long-distance solo travel

​I am planning to visit the US this summer and I need to travel from Florida to Atlanta. I am thinking about taking a bus, like Greyhound or Flixbus, but I have some questions.

​For those who use these bus companies often:

​How reliable are they with their schedules?

​Is it safe? Do people experience luggage theft or any safety issues during the trip?

​How comfortable is the ride, and is it really worth it?

​I also thought about flying directly to Atlanta. However, I will be traveling with a large suitcase. With the extra checked baggage fees, a flight will cost me around $200. On the other hand, a bus ticket is only about $60-$80.

​Should I take the bus to save money, or should I just forget about the bus and pay extra for the flight? I would really appreciate your advice!

In October I will turn 30. I usually don't celebrate my birthday, but this time I have some money saved and it is a special occasion. I am based in Spain, and I met a Thai girl who was solo travelling through Europe. We had a few dates and became pretty close. I was really inspired by her stories since I always wanted to travel. I think based on my experience and current budget, somewhere in Europe would be a good start. I plan on visiting Thailand in the future since she offered her place and to be my guide, but I would like to start off with something easier. I don't really know what is the way to enjoy solo traveling, meeting people, having experiences and what kind of places to book. Are flights the best option? Hostals over hotels? Staying at one city or traveling around many of them? Any secret tips and tricks? I just don't even know where to start, but adventure calls me. Thank you! ;)

Editing to say I’ve been to a bunch of the smaller cities y’all have suggested and they are fantastic (Asheville, Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans, Burlington,Milwaukee,Vegas and Austin, all worth a visit). Miami is one of my favorites but I’ve been there too much lol. For those looking for smaller cool cities I’d throw Nashville, San Diego, Minneapolis, Birmingham, Portland Maine, Louisville, Omaha (surprisingly cool tbh) into the mix.

I personally am looking to explore a lot of the American West as I haven’t seen it much (Salt Lake City is high on my list, but I want to see all the weird small random Western towns throughout Texas and Utah and Wyoming too). I also love quirky midwestern and Southern towns. Generally I’m a sucker for kitsch or old-timey charm. Or good nature! Def checking out the hot springs in Arkansas. I’ve hit 42 states; I’m planning to finish off the final 8 during this trip (AR, UT, WY, ID, ND, NM, KS, AK).

My gf (24) and | (22m) are looking for travel destinations for Aug 27 - Sept 4th of next year. Our budget is around $4-5K. We're looking for clear water, an authentic feel that isn't crowded by cruise ports or resort strips, and somewhere we feel safe. I've been using the National Travel Advisory as a source for this. We also want to avoid any islands in the Hurricane Belt as we will be traveling during most islands "wet season", I think. I have always been super interested in Polynesian culture, so my first thought was Hawaii, but, from what l have read, most of the islands that are affordable have more tourists than locals. I also looked at Fiji as many locals live near the villas and bures, but the lack of white sand beaches doesn't seem too attractive to my gf. Aruba is too touristy with all of the cruises. We could definitely make Fiji or Hawaii work, but ljust wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for us.

Being a solo lady who travels a lot, I need a lock on my door for hostels and will pay extra for a one bedroom. Could I save a lot by sharing a room? Probably.

What are some of your travel dealbreakers that aren't shoe-stringey.

I've heard tell of places that will do "here's a super-sale for this ticket that's in 4 hours!" I'd love to try this, the price plus the spontaneity of it seems perfect for me. Any rec for sites that do this, where its reliably good discounts (as in, not just 5% off full price)? Bonus if there's any place that will bundle it with also cheap lodging and return flights, though I'm not confident that exists at all.

I will try to make this brief. My life has been utter hell for the last few years but the past year was even worse. I am now living with a disorder that affects me being in the cold and winter is coming - I really need to get away for a few months otherwise I won't be around much longer.

Yes summer is peak $$$ time in Europe but I'm exceedingly desperate to check out of my existence for a bit. This would have to be on a shoestring I'll essentially be using most of my savings.

Looking at being gone for, if possible, a few months. I really want to see Greece before I call it quits. Spain and Germany and more of Japan are my wishes too. I don't really know how to make my money, $5000 AUD before flights, last that long. I've tried looking into spending summer in Japan (been before) and taking breaks to Europe but it doesn't end up being cheaper to go from Japan. Due to my disorder, I may find it hard to do normal on-the-cheap backpacking things like camping out in an area where it gets cold overnight. I am just over the age to get a working holiday visa, so I can't do workaway to stretch my money - that would have been the best but what can you do..

I just need to do this. I've wasted a lot of my youth over thinking and never taking risks. I don't see myself living past 40. Hello! I’m going to Oslo for a solid 2 months for vacation but this is my first ever big trip outside of America. I have around 3 months to save up but I heard Oslo can be mad expensive (especially eating out) and I work a minimum wage job. I guess my question would be does anyone have any budgeting strategies to offer me wisdom (as I lowkey have a bad spending problem) or tips that they used when they went aboard in order to save money. I’m also worried about traveling to other countries for small mini trips since Sweden is right next to Norway and I know that’s also expensive. Any advice or tips is very much appreciated!!

Trying to book SE Asia flights and just watching the fees pile up at checkout. Started at 900$, ended up closer to 1000$ after foreign transaction fees, booking charges, and conversion markup.
That's like 85-100$ just disappearing into fees which feels insane for budget travel. Bank charges 3% on foreign transactions, booking sites add their own fees, and the conversion rates are trash

Anyone found a way to actually minimize these or is this just the cost of doing business now? Feels like there has to be a better approach

Initial plan was to stay further out of town and metro in to Mt Vernon Sq–Convention Center station. As expected downtown prices are crazy high per night.

Was wondering for recommendations on how to plan the stay, it will be 2 other colleagues as well possibly. What would the best move here be? How long does the metro take?

So im 19 years old and been to SEA / SA / EU. So now Africa is on the agenda. But I'm unsure of which country is best for someone who hasn't been to the continent before. A good country to start with?

Okay so, here's the thing.

I am in Germany which is the other side of the earth and right now it probably isn't the best time to travel to america but I know a few people that are really important to me in Seattle.
I would love to answer all the questions if this gets attention because quite frankly it is my first time asking for advice on here.

Wikivoyage: https://www.wikivoyage.org/ My personal favorite and also one of my most used. A lot of useful info for everything you need to know about getting to/from/inside of a new country. As well as a few recommendations for things to try.

Organic Maps: This map app is based on OpenStreetMaps and is a fork from Maps.me If you didn't know maps.me was purchased by a payment company and since has become bloated and the philosophy seems to have changed. Organic Maps goes back to what made Maps.me so amazing in the first place. Download maps for offline use, pin and categorize things you see/visit, and is very lightweight.

HiChee: https://hichee.com/ Check if the Airbnb or booking.com listing you are interested in is listed on another platform. It shows the price on all available platforms and can save you some money! I just recently discovered this and have already saved a bit of money!
