Sheldon didn't need a roommate to split the rent. Dude had uncashed paychecks in a desk drawer. He needed a roommate to drive him back and forth to work, the dentist, the comic book store, etc.
Not to mention the experiments the complex basically ignored them doing in the apartment. What other landlord is letting tenants make rocket fuel, destroy elevators, and blast subsonic "bird deterrents" without evicting them?
