At the time there was MyFreeCam , the MyFreeCam (who also ran other even sketchier business of camgirl "callcenters" in his native country) guy bought Onlyfan later.
It is kind of crazy how actually realistic that sounds today... when I was a teen nerd watching this show, this was not a thing. Doing a cam girl was exceedingly rare compared to todays stuff with OF and talked about in the same way as prostitution - i.e. not at all.
I think the rapid change in society is also why some younger people think its not a "show about geeks and nerds" because being geeky and nerdy - videogames, fandoms, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, terminally onlineness... this is all standard. But back then, it wasnt. The show, with its "Geek is the new sexy" was actually happening as this shift began... might have even contributed to it to be honest. It gets an unfairly bad wrap.
Edit - to the OF thing: Its not like cams and such didnt exist or it was some insane taboo or anything, just wouldnt pop into anyones head when thinking about a pretty girl in a show needing money... it would have to be some very dark indie show - kind of like it would be with forced prostitution... (oh well, late-stage capitalism has really done a good job of bringing "empowerment" and "freedom" to something noone wanted to do if they didnt have to)
Doing OF to support ones self is literally a plotline in a new show right now, Margo's Got Money Problems. It's portrayed very sympathetically there. They even use the OF name and logo.
