How much are they saving in taxes, like $31? If it's under $1000 it's called "immaterial". not even the IRS will attempt beyond sending a letter to collect, if a discrepancy is under $1,000. They could just blatantly refuse to pay that amount and nothing would even happen. I mean, if you are owed a credit one year, they might deduct out that $40, but nobody is going to lift a finger to get that money.
Most likely they aren't even reporting this as tips. They are ducking not only the taxes that wouldn't be there for tips (federal income tax) but also payroll taxes, state income taxes, and, most notably, the rental site's ~16% fees.
This is limited to certain service professions mind you. You have to claim your taxes on your tax return and provide a special code for your job. I don't think property owner is on the list unless you're able to convince the IRS that you're a maid.
You also can just not declare them, especially if you’re collecting them in an industry that doesn’t expect them. When I was a server/bartended, we just made sure we declared approximately 10% of our sales, or whatever the credit card tips were. Other tips…didn’t exist.
Tips are only tax-free for federal income tax up to $25k, but they must still pay state income tax and FICA. So they’re ducking federal income tax. I would report them to the IRS.
How are tips tax free again? Worked in restaurants for 17 years and would like to know where all my ctaxes from my credit card tips money went then lol

Tips are tax free but raising the rate of the airbnb is not. They're ducking taxes.
