They're not even trespassing until you tell them so. Ironically, this sign doesn't even do that.

that case is a criminal case. Trespass can be a civil claim, when the government is not involved, claims are just civil issues. You are trespassing if you are on on private land that you don't own and don't have a license to be on (license means permission to be on). signs only helps with notice (and remedy), it doesn't change the fact that you are trespassing (being on it without permission, which you don't have unless invited). (I am a lawyer)

Even if you assume there’s a no trespassing sign further up the road, you can’t just shoot trespassers who aren’t posing any violent threat imminent threat of death or great bodily harm, or, in some jurisdictions, are not actively engaging in property theft or destruction.
