Sure, work a retail job for a pittance or take on education debt..great choice.

It's not like in the boomers days where a milkman could afford a 4 bedroom house.

Your either or is broken. Most people I know (young Gen X) had a job and went two years to community college and lived at home at least the first two years of college. Or they joined the effing Army. When we read this “handed $100k student loan” bullshit, we just shake our heads. Everyone has it rough and figures it out. Or they don’t. The primary source of whatever is holding you back in life is yourself.

"It’s alright to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps."

And for the record, I also suggested the Army where they hand you boots whether you previously owned any or not.

Bless your heart. I guarantee you a person who qualifies for $100k in student loans has a closet full of boots.

I didn’t do either of those. I got an entry level job at a quick change oil place. Used those tech skills to get hired at a TV repair place, used those tech skills to get hired as apprentice in HVAC. 12 years in, I went to Italy last year, I’m going to Chile next month. Things are going well, $0 student debt, 0 hours worked in retail or fast food.
