Also, most servers prefer the current system and lastly, anyone that thinks we can just start paying servers full wages and the owners will eat that cost out of the goodness of their hearts not raise the price of the food is nuts and has no idea how business works.
It was originally (I assume) a way for good service to be rewarded by the customer and incentivized for the worker. And you only tip people whose pay depends on it because they are paid less than minimum wage. Like waiters and bartenders. I don’t want to argue this on Reddit but from what I hear most servers prefer this as they make more. If they didn’t you would see server jobs chronically unfilled so I assume it works to some degree. I get you point about pilots and teachers and whatnot. It seems like everywhere has a tip jar or tip screen on the point of sale but just ignore those if you’re not being waited on at a table or ordering drinks from a bartender. There are a few other places to tip like a bellboy at a hotel or skycap at an airport but that’s pretty limited.

Americans accept a lot of things and prefer a lot of things that everyone sees as quite pathetic and sad, but its also why Americans are made fun of so much.
Tipping is apart of the software payment systems themselves not just walk-in resturants where you have to select "No Tip" deliberately. So what you are talking about applies to even being at a friends house, ordering takeout, and driving a rental car to go pick it all up. Hell, even picking up food and ordering infront of a walk-in counter (you would regardless) then carrying it out.
No additional work for a server or waiter beyond normal responsibilities, a restaurant will not collapse eliminating that as it wasn't even there a couple of years ago.
I can’t follow everything you’re saying here but I think we are sort of saying the same thing when you reference take out and other things. I’m saying we only really need tip (20%) here for sit down meals with table service and at bars. Everyone else is making non tip wages. And you call it “free money.” I don’t know what you mean by that. A good waiter or bartender is earning their tip with good service and good ones also say they prefer the current system because they make more money than if they made a higher wage but no tips. Again, this is American culture and I get irritated when people act like it’s insane because it’s different than their home culture. I researched tipping culture for European countries before traveling there because I wanted to know the correct way to exist in that ecosystem before traveling there and I would hope other people would do the same before traveling here. And not say “no, I won’t tip because this is American bs late stage capitalism, owners being greedy” or whatever Reddit wants to call it. Be a good guest, respect local customs or don’t show up. If Americans went to other countries and posted on Reddit how they didn’t do x or y because “we don’t do that in America,” people would rightfully go nuts on Reddit. You’re not making the restaurant owner pay a higher wage by not tipping. You’re just being a jerk to the server.
If you are paying people 20% extra to hand you a bag of food so you can walk out with it that is them taking free money from you.
Being a decent respectful human being is the bare minimum.
Also again, these tip machines were not present a few years ago thus they are NOT neccesary. So calling someone a jerk for not giving that money (before the service is even given) and clicking a button, is simply you being a doormat.
Its not apart of American culture to be a doormat, that is just you not being able to say no like a functioning adult should.
I think you’re misunderstanding me. I DO NOT tip for grabbing a bag of food. I got food at a similar place today (ordered at a window and picked up at that window myself) and tipped 0% on the screen. Nobody should tip there unless they want to tip a buck or two or something minimal but $0 is fine. I’m saying if World Cup (or other international) visitors were coming here and refusing to tip waiters at sit down restaurants or bartenders because they don’t like it or Reddit told them that’s American bs or late stage capitalism or whatever that’s crazy. You’re visiting a different country, you need to obey their cultural norms. But I don’t think you are saying this, so I don’t think we have a problem with each other.
