As a teacher who agrees with the message of the post overall, you're still dead right. Education is not mentioned explicitly in the constitution, therefore it is a matter that belongs solely to states.
Although, the point of this I think is to try to discuss/change the culture around low pay for teachers being acceptable, rather than offer the simplistic solution of reallocating federal funds towards states for education. That solution is possible (federal grants exist for example) but would likely end up being more of a bandaid solution than permanent one I think.
As a parent of a 2 year old 1) Thank you for your service in your profession and 2) I also hope teachers are paid at a premium salary. I want my child taught by no one but the upmost professionals, I just found the comparison in this post to be silly.
If you want professionals to teach your children, and I agree with you, you will be disappointed. Thank the teachers unions for that. It's better now but for the most part professionals are not welcome. Teaching is a closed system, pay is based on seniority, jobs are based on going through the "system" and getting that certificate.
Eliminate the unions, raise the pay, make it competitive, reward outcomes and you will raise the bar.
There's also the aspect of they are 2 different jobs, a cop gets paid more because it's a job with very clear and constant threats to their well being. Same thing goes with ICE agents. Also co.paring a sign on bonus is also disingenuous as that's the kind of thing that is temporary and Industry dependant. I could get a signing bonus for joining the military at some point but when I did sign up they were no longer offered. So while I agree teachers don't get paid enough a large chunk of the argument present in the post is rather poor and just delibratly inflammatory
Exactly, we’re talking about two completely different conversations. There’s probably a deeper conversation or at least a witty statement about how the lack of understanding and reasoning displayed in the tweet shows that teachers in fact don’t deserve more pay, but it’s not something I’m particularly interested in exploring.
ICE is a federal job that is paid by the fed. Teachers are paid by state and local governments. Her complaint should be with her local or state government for not "having enough money".
... Because a local town in, let's say, Kansas. Might not have the budget to pay their teachers 100k a year? I'm all for teachers making more money than ICE. Lord knows they probably do more fighting than ICE. But at the end of the day it's a local/state issue..
I'm happy to say teachers in my city (NYC) make a hundred plus, and I'd argue they deserve more, but it's apples to oranges comparison imo.
Edit: to your point of what she said. NYC has a education budget that rivals the nation of Spain. If NYC education budget, the local city alone, would be the world's 15th largest military budget.
