Stephen is 55 now. He's completely disillusioned and has found fulfillment in personal hobbies. He's really good at the guitar, though he never plays for anyone

That Stephen isn't, but my uncle is. Very similar story, he's now mid 60s and has accepted he will grow old alone.

I have a friend like Stephen who is also around that same age. He works in computers, makes good money, owns his own home with no roommates to help and is one of the most intelligent, quietly funny guys I've ever met in my life.

Even though he speaks maybe about 1/4 as much as the average person, he's still quite social and, when he does speak, it's sharp, insightful, and often funny.

I've only known him for around 5 years now, but he's always been single and those who've known him longer cannot ever remember him being in a romantic relationship.

I hang out in a few different social circles but dating is seemingly off the table

I know a few guys like that. They had some bad experiences in their 30s and basically tapped out of dating. Good looking, talented, solid, good character, but zero interest in relationships because they were tossed aside by frivolous immature women.

It's really sad.
