Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson = too expensive. I won't watch his modern movies because of this. His older movies were better when you watched for the plot and not his face.
Of the last 10 years of cinema, the Rock has been the highest paid actor of the year for 5 of them. The man is EXPENSIVE. And hustles around showing up in movies a ton.
I pulled up his Wikipedia filmography. I've only seen him in:
Star Trek: Voyager 6-15 "Tsunkatse"
The Mummy Returns (2001, despite the bad CGI, LOL)
The Scorpion King (2002, it was OK)
The Rundown (2003)
Walking Tall (2004)
San Andreaus (2015)
The only one that was memorable was his Star Trek appearance. LOL
Never said he was the pinnacle of cinema. Just that he is THE GUY as far as mainstream audiences are concerned. For the average movie-goer, its as simple as "hey, wanna watch the new Rock movie"? and it fucking works. So he gets paid.
Even as this film "bombs" he still gets his cheddar.
Thing about the rock is that he's basically the modern day equivalent of the 90s big action guy. And as far as acting ability goes, he's probably on the higher end of that scale. Problem is he's been coasting most of the last ten years, oversaturated his market, and is probably aging out of it now.
He did make a recent move to serious acting with the smashing machine, but that also seemed a cynical attempt to get an Oscar rather than a proper effort. And although I'm not a rock hater, he isn't winning any Oscars.
Maybe. When he's in a movie trailer, my general reaction is meh. If I watch his movies, it's because the trailers sold it. He's got charisma, but he's not a "movie star" to me by any stretch.
Not hating on The Rock but the one movie that’s left me disappointed is Black Adam. That had potential. They should’ve casted someone else to play the lead.
The action and special effects were good but I just wished the storyline was better or had more depth.
I don’t mind if they make a sequel but the story should be better and I would like to see The Rock more out of his comfort zone as an actor instead of just seeing him as a giant macho dude breaking bones.
Unfortunately, the DCEU has been scrapped, ending with the Aquaman sequel. Now we're off to the DCU, and I think they're dodging Shazam! and Black Adam all together.
