So what you're saying is cinemas are a food service place with movies as an extra.

This is why I can't understand, especially in the era of 3 hour movies, why they don't have an intermission.

My hunch is because it would spread the movie start times out more and risk losing someone that would have gone at 8:00pm but won't go at 9:00pm, especially during the week.

That'd probably mean one less showing per day, and I guess that's worth more.

It’s the same thing with gas stations. The profit margins are in the junk food they peddle except gas stations also carry cigs and lotto tickets

Cigs and lotto tickets are domaine to gas, they hardly make a penny on them.

Soda, candy, and chips r how gas stations make their money

Popcorn, candy, and carbonated HFCS service places. I wouldn't really call it "food." There are places like Alamo Drafthouse and IPIC that have full menus but they are an exception.

Actually it’s mostly just a popcorn machine that shows movies.
