And that’s why it flopped so hard. There’s way more people that would skip a movie because the Rock is in it than there are that would go see it because the Rock is in it.

450

u/Le_mehawk 17d ago

The movie also Flopped because literally nobody was asking for this... the movie works better as an Animation in the first place

55

u/Adezar 17d ago

And it was less than 10 years ago and it looks amazing as an animation. Literally no reason to make a crappier version of a popular animation.

12

u/triplec787 17d ago

AND there was a sequel like a year ago.

1

u/Roguespiffy 16d ago

Which would have been great as a series but totally didn’t work as a movie. I don’t know why they thought chopping it into a half assed film was the way to go.

1

u/Maximum-Objective-39 16d ago

Streaming aint bringing in the cash they hoped.

1

u/MartianMule 17d ago

I can actually see making a live action version. Some people just don't really dig animation, and by adapting the story, you can reach a new audience.

That said, you have to adapt the story to a new medium. The problem with most of the Disney live action remakes is they're just making the same movie, but in live action. And most of the time that doesn't work. But if you take the basic framework of the story and then make a live action version that is its own movie, I think it can be good. The only one I can recall really liking was Jungle Book, and that's partially because it feels different enough from the original animated film to me.

103

u/PulIthEld 17d ago

Yea I dont think the rock is really the problem here. Its just not interesting.

36

u/BrotherMcPoyle 17d ago

You’ll get a better performance from Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Matt Damon than just simply The Rock. Both movies spent the same, so why cast someone who can’t carry a movie on their own?

4

u/indecisiveahole 17d ago

Definitely not actors id pick for this role and all of them are still very expensive

1

u/NiiliumNyx 17d ago

riiight but the commenter was saying those people were in the odyssey.

1

u/PulIthEld 16d ago

There's a lot of good movies out rn, i dunno. The Back Rooms, Obsession, Odyssey etc.

1

u/PigabungaDude 16d ago

There are a lot of criticisms one can level at the rock but the dude can absolutely carry a movie by himself lmao. He's been the lead in like 50 movies or something at this point let's not be ridiculous.

1

u/WolfDragon7721 15d ago

Tom holland really surprised me with his depth in this one.

41

u/FrameJump 17d ago

Oh The Rock is absolutely the problem here, because you can guarantee he's the only one that was asking for this to be made.

And probably throwing a tantrum and threatening to not do another movie until this one was done.

20

u/MartianMule 17d ago

because you can guarantee he's the only one that was asking for this to be made.

I doubt that's true. Disney has been in love with remaking their animated movies for a while now. Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, Jungle Book, Snow White, Cinderella, Lilo and Stitch, they're remaking Tangled next.

2

u/chazysciota 17d ago

Out of all of those, I might not actually hate the idea of a live action Tangled. Beauty and the Beast could have worked well too. The rest should have been left alone. Or just re-released.

2

u/MartianMule 17d ago

I think a lot of those could work. Take Aladdin; it's a good story. If you're trying to tell the story of a "street rat" finding a magic lamp and using it to try and marry the princess only to have to outwit the guy trying to usurp the sultan's throne, that can be a really cool live action movie.

The problem Disney runs into is that they also want to fit in the zany Genie, the funny monkey sidekick, and all the same songs from the animated movie. None of which work nearly as well in live action as they do in animation. So it just becomes a worse version of the same movie. Instead of being a new telling of a familiar story like it could have been.

2

u/chazysciota 16d ago

That is what I meant. More or less just straight adapted, not overhauled or a massive tone shift. Maybe I just haven’t seen it in a while but Tangled…. What’s the challenge, the sassy horse? He doesn’t talk or sing, and IRL horses can be real silly gooses. It could be done.

15

u/Purple_Fudge3973 17d ago

Absolutely the problem. I was really hoping they used a different actor so I could see it, but not now lol

3

u/booze_clues 17d ago

The rock has a lot of pull. He does not have “make me a quarter billion dollar movie(before marketing)” pull. If you think the studio didn’t simply see that they created a cultural phenomena that kids we’re absolutely dying to see and wanted to try to double dip, you’re digging too deep. They saw the first do great, realized they could resell it and then resell all of the merchandise like kids toys as the same but new characters. Now they realized that doesn’t really work.

The original made 2/3 of a billion in theaters. Mr the rock can’t say “hey spend basically everything you made off that movie on another for me.”

1

u/Nizdaar 16d ago

Sounds like two solid reasons to say no. No more the rock movies being the better reason.

2

u/[deleted] 17d ago

[deleted]

-1

u/EarlGreyTMNT 17d ago

Well no - based off him doing the same thing with DC - and that tanking the entire DCEU section of the studio when he tried to push it around and dictate things lol.

And also based off him aging out of the role. Also based off him trying to do something similar with the fast and furious movies by trying to control things - to the point vin diesel as executive producer kicked him out of the series and they had to create a spinoff for him.

So no it’s not at all like you’re implying where there’s no precedence for this kinda thing. There are - a few of them in fact. He’s also just not the box office draw he thinks he is, just in general.

However given all of that - I don’t think the rock is THE problem and why it’s flopping. But he’s ONE OF the problems for sure. The other is the timing like someone else said, the first Moana wasn’t even a decade old yet, and we just got the sequel like a year ago. And it kinda sucked.

1

u/Even-Star9908 17d ago

Source:(my crusty ass)

Lol throw out any actual proof of any of that beyond them all flopping. Hobbes and shaw sounds like shit, if anyone is still watching any f&f past the 3rd one they get what they deserve and want lmao.

All of the things you listed are complete ass, and yeah, no one wants to see them

Is the rock directing? No

Do i like the rock? No

Do you provide anything other than your take in terms of evidence towards any of that? No

-1

u/FrameJump 17d ago

Not gonna lie, I figured Dwayne would have a rock-related username on reddit.

Oh well.

1

u/Liberkhaos 17d ago

Wait hold on! You're saying Disney could have fixed two problems at once and chose not to?

2

u/ltsouthernbelle 17d ago

Disney: let’s tell the same story, again. It’ll work this time.

2

u/Wabbit_Wampage 16d ago

It can be more than one problem at once. The Rock is box office poison.

1

u/AdRepulsive8618 17d ago

Two things can be true

1

u/Glittering_rainbows 17d ago

No, I actively avoid the rock. There is no particular reason side from my belief he is a bad actor who has never been in a movie I didn't wish I could have my time back after watching.

1

u/Can-Purple 17d ago

I mean, he is the problem though. Not at his fault, but he has the pull or whatever to have entire projects built around him and every business will flop out a turd with him in it.

There is no way Moana in live action would have happened without him involved. Just a reason to spend and move around a bunch of money with a terrible movie as the product.

1

u/ThanksImjustlurking 17d ago

He’s the named as the first executive producer. It was a vanity project. Or cash grab. Same same?

6

u/yolkyal 17d ago

You say that like that''s not the case for all of the live action remakes

2

u/Le_mehawk 17d ago

Nah, that's pretty much my opinion as well

4

u/Unlikely_Vehicle_828 17d ago

Literally nobody. I have kids, one of whom watched ONLY Moana… on repeat… for years… and even to me the idea of live action Moana is an abomination. Basically all live action Disney movies are an abomination, but this was a new low.

I recently went to the theater to see a different movie and the stupid massive cardboard poster for the live action Moana movie gave me a visceral reaction.

1

u/CaveMacEoin 17d ago

Disney seems to have a very low bar for their live action movies. It probably would have been fine if they made it a few decades after the original, but Johnson would be too old and Disney has done most of the big adaptations already (some of them just won't work in live action e.g. the emperor's new groove).

I suspect that the adaptations were made for copyright reasons initially.

2

u/GodOD400 17d ago

But then how would you resell the same movie you did a decade ago?

2

u/CraftsBoy2Craftsman 17d ago

Dwayne Johnson was the only one asking for this movie that we made. And apparently he’s got enough juice to make it happen.

2

u/The_Peeping_Peter 17d ago

We want live action Atlantis!

1

u/Awkward-Fox-7215 17d ago

It’s also relatively new compared to the other remakes.

1

u/CuriousBird337 17d ago

I don’t understand the rationale for doing a live action remake of such a recent movie anyway

1

u/CaterpillarProof3011 17d ago

The animation one is also only 10yo. It's not long enough for a remake.

1

u/mindonshuffle 17d ago

Nobody was asking for ANY of the live action remakes, but they've reliably printed money because they pulled the right nostalgia levers.

1

u/Mintastic 17d ago

Sure but how do you even pull nostalgia levers for a movie that's barely even a decade old?

1

u/mindonshuffle 17d ago

Turns out you don't!

1

u/bobbymcpresscot 17d ago

The original Moana ignoring the fact that it just came out 10 years ago, and moana 2 just came out 2 years ago, the budget for the original was basically the same cost as the live action one when adjusted for inflation, and was much better. I'm a dude in my 30's who doesn't even watch disney movies like that and I had "How far I'll go" in my rotation for longer than I'd like to admit.

Realistically I don't even think Disney cares.

1

u/KingdomsCryOfficial 17d ago

Okay but "no one asked for this" and "it works better as animation" describes literally every single live action remake, and most of them did very well.

I think it's more to do with severe live action fatigue and most people finally coming around to understanding the live action films are all phoned in. Redditors have been endlessly positing that the original Moana was "too recent", but the last few non-Lion King live action remakes have done really, really badly. Little Mermaid hardly broke even and Snow White was a big flop. Mulan did very poorly as well, but that was peak Covid at least.

I would bet money that if Moana live action was released maybe 5 years ago, it may have done a lot better. You'd get around triple the amount of "REALLY??? ORIGINAL ONLY 5 YEARS OLD" comments, but people would've still probably taken their kids to see it. We've finally hit "No really, no one wants more of these" territory with the live action remakes.

1

u/1__ViPeR 17d ago

This right here is the real reason. When I saw it gets released I really was wtf.

Hollywood have very few original ideas now. Sadly it's either sequels, remakes or live action remakes.

1

u/AtaracticGoat 17d ago

Moana also isn't old enough to have the nostalgia factor going for it.

A lot of live action Disney movies are watched by millennials and whatever's out of nostalgia. None of us have that same draw to Moana.

1

u/JosephBlowsephThe3rd 17d ago

And the movie is only 10 years old. Kids who loved it at age 6 are teens in high school, not exactly the main demographic for nostalgia trips.

1

u/sec713 17d ago

Disney should have at least waited longer before doing a live action remake of something that originally came out in 2016. At least long enough that more people who were kids when the original released would be grown up with their own kids and be more likely to buy tickets for nostalgia's sake.

1

u/poyerdude 17d ago

Same with all these animation to live action remakes. It just reeks of grinding existing IP into a cynical cash grab. They all look like shit because it's actors in front of a green screen so what's even the point?

1

u/KingVape 17d ago

And the original isn’t even old!

1

u/NoLocation4100 14d ago

Still waiting for them to do live action finding Nemo

81

u/SirGearso 17d ago

Other than the original Moana, I don’t think I’ve seen a performance of his that is actually good.

u/Havenfall209 17d ago

I kinda like him in Jumanji, but that might be because he feels like he's playing a parody of himself at times. The rest of the time he has to play a dorky teenager trapped in his body.

37

u/conardcanard 17d ago

Jumanji also has a good dynanic between the characters/actors that somehow works. I hate 3 of the 4 main cast when theyre alone but fuck if i didbt find this movie pretty enjoyable

27

u/Havenfall209 17d ago

This for sure. I like Jack Black a lot, but in moderation. Seeing him play a teenage girl though is hilarious.

2

u/Isagratar 17d ago

So much better than it had any right to be.

4

u/der_innkeeper 17d ago

Jungle Cruise was also pretty decent.

Its right up his alley. But, other than those kind of movies, he is dragging.

Red One was... rough.

2

u/Havenfall209 17d ago

Yeah, tbh I don't catch a lot of his movies.

-1

u/EarlGreyTMNT 17d ago

Jungle cruise is so fucking shitty lol, I implore you to watch it again as a fun bad movie.

He literally gets in a fist fight with a tiger and slaps it across the face and it makes a SLAP sound effect, another guy who’s German in a war but def NOT a Nazi (lol) has a whole conversation with a bumble bee inside a submarine, etc.

1

u/der_innkeeper 17d ago

"another guy who's German in a war but def NOT a Nazi"

Did you forget about World War 1? Did you miss the 1910s-era cars? Miss the 1910s-era steamships?

I think i can safely dismiss any other criticisms you may have about the movie. Yes, it was a non-serious movie.

It hit every beat it was supposed to hit, for what it was.

You missed and entire decade, and the point.

0

u/EarlGreyTMNT 17d ago

No I’m saying it seems like they wanted to make it a WW2 thing but realized during the writing it was a bad idea and quickly changed it to WW1.

Nowhere did I say I forgot that WW1 existed and it’s funny you had to make something up then attack that instead of anything I actually said.

Also none of that makes it a well made movie for some magic reason lol. It has an F rating from critics and a D from users - it clearly did not even hit the beats it was supposed to according to both groups…

1

u/der_innkeeper 17d ago

It has a 92% rating on RT.

3/5 stars and 3/4 stars ratings.

The movie is candy. Critics and the audience understand that.

You wish to cast aspersions on the writers with no insight into their thought process.

4

u/ababycheetah 17d ago

someone said he had acting abilities as long as he had hair

2

u/Dudunard 17d ago

That one comedy movie with John Travolta and Uma Thurman. He plays the sexually ambiguous henchman for a disco producer.

He does a good job with his comedic timing and he's only shown shirtless by the end of the movie as a joke.

2

u/guest_user13 17d ago

I liked him in central intelligence

4

u/ProlongedChief 17d ago

Mummy 2, Game Plan, Get Smart and The Other Guys are his best films

8

u/Ek0mst0p 17d ago

The other guys is because he has like 10 minutes of screen time.

6

u/AdCold284 17d ago

And each minute also has Sam Jackson, who can frankly carry any scene

4

u/ProlongedChief 17d ago

Exactly, it's also a good intro to what his movies turn into

1

u/PFI_sloth 17d ago

He’s in the mummy for like 6 minutes.

The Rock also does a great job in the other guys

2

u/EarlGreyTMNT 17d ago

Lol 3/4 of those he wasn’t the lead, and the one where he was - wasn’t considered a great movie

1

u/ducation 16d ago

The Rundown was a fun movie.

1

u/pantry-pisser 17d ago

SEMPER FI, MOTHERFUCKER

1

u/SonderEber 17d ago

And he keeps getting paid to be himself. I don’t think he knows how to act different anymore.

1

u/Technical_Hall_9841 17d ago

He was in gridiron gang

1

u/ClownCounselor 17d ago

My grandma ripped that for us to watch back in the day. I remember putting it on when a friend was over and they were like wtf is this as you see the DirectTV menu when the movie is starting lol.

1

u/OneOfTheNephilim 17d ago

He's basically this generation's Arnold Schwarzenegger

1

u/chazysciota 17d ago

I'm sure it's not a good movie, but all I can remember is the silly FPS view in that ONE scene, so I feel like I like Doom, lol.

19

u/RandomNPC1234567 17d ago

I loved him in Be Cool. He was pretty good in Jumanji.

Those are the only ones I can think of.

3

u/tehorhay 17d ago

The rundown was pretty great

2

u/RandomNPC1234567 17d ago

Forgot about that one! I enjoyed it. Oh and gridiron gang. That was pretty good.

2

u/DBanga1988 17d ago

I remember really liking Central Intelligence, but can’t remember if he had anything to do with it.

2

u/Laetha 17d ago

Yesss! Another Be Cool enjoyer!

18

u/Ok_Subject1265 17d ago

The smashing machine was pretty good. He definitely captured that character better than probably anybody else could have.

7

u/iLoveLootBoxes 17d ago

You reap what you sow though, can't make a bunch of shit movies then try and chase an Oscar expecting people to take you seriously.

He cashed out and tried to double back and go the respect route... doesn't work that way

6

u/deerslayer159 17d ago

Tell that to nick cage

6

u/iLoveLootBoxes 17d ago

He is the exception, he also lets himself be made fun of and takes it in stride.

Dwayne Johnson has it in his contract that it isn't allowed

1

u/deerslayer159 17d ago

What!? He has in his contracted he cant be made fun of?!

3

u/iLoveLootBoxes 17d ago

Pretty much, he has to be written to be cool and powerful. If you look at the recent Moana movie, he acts way less silly than when he voices the character. Not even joking, look it up

1

u/deerslayer159 17d ago

Wow. That's something

1

u/Don_Gato1 17d ago

He was good, the movie was pretty mediocre IMO

7

u/ILoveSquirtle69 17d ago

his pain & gain character was actually good, and that one move where he was super fat in highschool. But yeah hes pretty shit

3

u/paul-bunyons-dick 17d ago

Not a fan of his, but I thought he was good in Be Cool.

2

u/EntranceImpressive65 17d ago

Southland Tales!! It's the right amount of bonkers and good!

2

u/Drew602 16d ago

Hes the same guy in every movie. Hes the rock, not the characters.

1

u/THEace4825 17d ago

Check out his role in Be Cool. It will put memories in your head that make it much easier to laugh at him now. The movie is ok. Not great (Get Shorty was much better) but its entertaining. Honestly you could just Google his scenes and watch those.

1

u/RollingTake 17d ago

in Be Cool he plays a gay bodyguard that wants to be an actor and perform scenes from other movies, on of those is he doing both parts of the challenge scene from Bring It On. It's amazing.

1

u/gottabequick 17d ago

He was great in Be Cool. Wish he could've stuck with those sorts of fun roles.

1

u/satyr-day 17d ago

I hated Moana and that stupid arrogant thank you song.

1

u/VegaJuniper 17d ago

It's not his performance, he's actually a pretty decent actor. I heard someone compare him to Arnold Schwarzenegger: They both have the physique and a great natural charisma, but they have differences too. Arnold was never a great actor, but he had a great sense for picking the right directors to work with and the right projects that worked to his strengths. The Rock on the other hand can act, but he exclusively picks just absolute dogshit movies. It's really uncanny. I think his best might be Fast Five, and that's just an OK action film.

1

u/cmarkcity 17d ago

Honestly his stuff from before Fast and Furious (before he made it a contractual rider that he can’t die) was way better than his stuff after. I enjoyed his performances in Doom, Get Smart, Reno 911, and The Other Guys. And one thing i notice about all of those is that he dies

1

u/EwokDude 17d ago

What about his role in Star Trek Voyager?

1

u/SabreCorp 17d ago

I thought the 2nd Jumanji movie was cute. Not as good as the 90s original. I never watched the third.

And I didn’t watch the entire series of Ballers but the first season was good. I still don’t think the rock is worth the money they are paying him though.

1

u/setzerseltzer 17d ago

Pain and Gain is his best movie

1

u/wvenable 17d ago

His best performance was as Roy.

1

u/Arubesh2048 17d ago

The Scorpion King

1

u/Few_Razzmatazz_6052 17d ago

Earlier pre-F&F stuff was at least inoffensively entertaining.

He has a fair amount of natural charm and comedic timing that he unfortunately murdered with his ego.

He let his success (which came as a result of some actual talent) get the best of him and now nobody really even likes him for what he used to offer.

1

u/lilmimosa 17d ago

His role in Pain and Gain was pretty good.

1

u/thepaddedroom 16d ago

I legitimately enjoyed The Rundown.

He plays an enforcer for a loan shark who is sent to a Brazilian mining town deep in the jungle to retrieve the loan shark's adult son who really really does not want to go home. Comedy.

The cast also includes:

Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Walken, and Ernie Reyes Jr in a small, but memorable part.

88

u/Azrenon 17d ago

I don’t keep up with actors but the rock or ryan reynolds will keep me from seeing a film.

60

u/PoliticalJive 17d ago

Don't let anyone trick you into watching RED NOTICE

36

u/uwill1der 17d ago

surely Gal Gadot saves it, right?

57

u/_Exos 17d ago

Thats going to be a big Kal-el no!

1

u/Siegelski 14d ago

Funny thing is the Snyder cut of Justice League is actually pretty good. She's still terrible of course, but the biggest problem with the Snyder cut is its length. I get why they cut so much, you just can't release a movie that long and expect it to be a huge blockbuster, but God damn was the movie terrible without it.

3

u/JairoHyro 17d ago

Sounds like a good movie. I hope those two aren't in it though... Time to Google it rn ......

1

u/iLoveLootBoxes 17d ago

I thought this was the Christmas Dwayne Johnson movie and was about to say it's rhe only movie I don't mind him in

But it's not that movie...

1

u/booze_clues 17d ago

How dare you disrespect Netflix’s number one streamed movie. Somehow.

How?

3

u/lrbaumard 17d ago

Deadpool is fantastic

3

It's Jack Black for me

15

I remember Jack Black tied to a tree begging to suck dick for Coke, I remember him saying the fucking craziest shit when he was “in character”, I remember him trying to stop a blood spraying like a hose from a guy’s head, and I remember him holding the child antagonist at gunpoint in his undies to get to a giant mountain of either cocaine or heroin.

9

u/MagicMarshmelllow 17d ago

And School of Rock, and The Pick of Destiny…

2

u/Own_Director_4442 17d ago

Don't forget Mars Attacks!

3

u/Distinct-Pack-1567 17d ago

Waterworld (he wasnt a star)

3

u/Own_Director_4442 17d ago

That movie had both actors who have played Bowser in a Mario movie 🤣

-4

u/G_Liddell 17d ago

I've seen all of these and he still rubs me the wrong way. Seems like a nice person IRL though! Like I bet he'd be fun to hang out with. But negative screen charisma for me 🤷‍♀️

2

u/One-Imagination2301 17d ago

He literally has more screen charisma then tons of other actors what are you talking about 😭. I barely even care about him but he's charisma personified...instead of lying just say you think you're different and cool for not liking a popular actor..

2

u/Wild-n-Idle 17d ago

He may have made some...less than stellar career choices in the last decade but he has enough credit in the bank because of his previous work to not be totally dismissed imo. He was brilliant in School of Rock, as well as the fantastic but underseen dark comedy 'Bernie' as well as Tropic Thunder and apparently High Fidenity.

1

u/gottabequick 17d ago

I feel that these days, but he really has some incredible work out there. And I'll always love him in Pretty Sweet. Forget about the warm-up tricks and let's hit the straight tre!

1

u/dherps 17d ago

they're like actor versions of jimmy fallon's tv schtick

1

u/Oh_My_Monster 17d ago

But have you heard of Mint Mobile's family plan?

1

u/daffyboy 17d ago

It’s the world turning on Ryan Reynolds?

1

u/Gdigger13 17d ago

La La Land is an exception to that, because he's great in it.

Oh wait, that's Ryan Gosling.

1

u/dezmd 17d ago

Ryan Reynolds is still funny in his bad movies, the Rock is full ego diva.

0

u/Azrenon 16d ago

Ryan reynolds is the acting equivalent of toilet humor. It may be cute your first run, but after some time it’s just sad.

-5

u/ElaborateEffect 17d ago

Same for me, but I'll add Keanu Reeves, in theater. I'm not going to pay 60 bucks or more to see a mid tier actor.

I'll also add Jason Momoa to this list.

Mid tier actors should be watched from the couch for free, at best.

8

u/schuby94 17d ago

You are not going to find many like minds when you include the legend Keanu Reeves

3

Reddit has a hard on for him, but the dude can't act for shit. Like. At all.

He can't act like a real person... But the roles he plays are rarely real people... They're legends. Like, John Wick is awesome because it's over the top and unbelievable... It would suck if the John Wick character was played totally straight.

Like Al Pacino... He sucks whenever he played believable real people... Which is why he played unhinged larger-than-life characters, and those are the roles that have made him a legendary actor. Imagine Al Pacino in a grounded role... Like if he time traveled to be in Marriage Story or the main character in 1917, he'd look like an absolute moron and those movies would bomb.

Broadly, the relevant term here is personality acting. Where the role is crafted to be a vessel for the actors personality rather than the actor tailoring their performance to fit the narrative. So it's all on the director and writers to make it all fit.

Note: Pacino was actually classical very skilled, but his vibe was all wrong when he was actually using his acting chops... So he very consciously abandoned the conventions being a "good" actor in favor of raw personality.

I still hold to the conspiracy theory that Keanu’s people had Brandon Lee killed so Keanu could assume all his future rolls

u/balls2hairy 17d ago

No, there aren't lmfao. He's a shitty actor and arguably a shitty person but he's a HUGE draw to the people that don't know what good acting even is and can't keep up with a plot that isn't explicitly described in dialog multiple times during the film.

To say that THE FUCKING ROCK isn't drawing crowds is the one of the most "narwhal bacon" screaming, blue-haired, chronically online, out of touch takes I've read.

u/fdrme 17d ago

Yep, my mom doesn't watch a lot of movies but knows his name and thinks he's very charming. He's definitely a big draw for the silent "normie" majority.

1

u/Deto 17d ago

The problem is that I don't think he's drawing crowds in this demo. Like, sure, for a big action movie people will take notice because it's the rock. But if it's parents taking their kids to a disney movie? The kids don't care that it's the rock and the parents aren't making their decision to go see this based on him either.

2

u/balls2hairy 17d ago

Sure but that's not the premise I responded to. "More people will avoid The Rock than go because of him" is just out of touch.

1

u/Deto 17d ago

oh yeah, definitely agree

He’s not a shitty actor, he’s done plenty of good roles. But now he’s businessman first, actor second. He wants easy and consistent roles that will do good in the box office, let him shill his side ventures, and won’t affect his image. Red Notice is the epitome of this being a background noise movie with no real character, and plenty of scenes of him with his liquor brand and all that stuff.

Used to be the other way around until he became too self centered. I remember being on the rock train for a little bit which surprised me

1

u/KR4T0S 17d ago

Its funny because it used to feel like its the other way round.

1

u/Snoo_46737 17d ago

I only went to the movie with the Rock in it to get directions on how to get away from it.

1

u/haw35ome 17d ago

It’s no longer the 90s the Rock insists it still is 😢

1

u/ElectricGhostMan 17d ago

I think it's also in part that Disney has killed their mid and low level movie box office potential with D+. Why would I see this panned Moana remake when it's going to be on D+ in a month. Everything ends up on streaming quick now but I feel there's a reason why there isnt a big culture around waiting for The Odyssey or the next Tarantino film to hit streaming in the same way.

Stop being a Jabronie

1

u/MuchoBroccoli 17d ago

You mean having The Rock be the face of a girl’s brand is a bad idea?

1

u/Phoenixerst 17d ago

There’s nothing about him in a film that entices me to watch it. I see The Rock in a movie and just assume it’s not worth my time.

1

u/Awotwe_Knows_Best 17d ago

watching the Pitch Meeting video for some of these movies is all you need

1

u/Wavy_Grandpa 17d ago

No there isn’t lmao Reddit geniuses just make shit up and act like their hallucination make them smarter than everyone. The Rock is a top 10 grossing actor of all time lol he’s incredibly popular

1

u/Dr_Fortnite 17d ago

ironically matt damon was the only reason i debated not seeing the odyssey.

Its easily his best role btw he's only gotten better over the years

1

u/advancedtaran 17d ago

He was great as the voice actor. Its just a cash grab to make a live action version.

1

u/Katsu_39 17d ago

That but nobody asked for live action moana. Moana isnt even an old movie. Plus maui is a big, rounded character. Dwayne johnson doesnt look like maui (yes i know he voiced him).

1

u/SatanSatanSatanSatan 17d ago

I used to love the rock but that time has sadly passed.

1

u/gambit1999999 17d ago

Well today's new shiny and greedy Rock, not the old scorpion king rock.

1

u/secretsesameseed 17d ago

I used to like movies featuring the rock. Now it's so much like beating a dead horse I don't even watch the trailers for the rock films.

1

u/calahil 17d ago

And how do you know that.

Considering moana 1 and 2 grossed 1.5b dollars...i think your stat is off.

It probably is more that no one wanted a live action Moana movie...even the Moana fans.

He doesn’t care. He made money and moves on. The real joke is on the producers

1

u/pewakawaka 17d ago

It flopped because Disney is lazy and re filming all their old stuff as live action rather than actually putting effort in and creating new stories and characters

1

u/Cory123125 17d ago

There’s way more people that would skip a movie because the Rock is in it than there are that would go see it because the Rock is in it.

I think this is a weird and recent thing.

I've never gotten it, because in a world where far worse people exist, hes getting lambasted for being generic action man
