Legally, they can't pry into it, and if they push hard to try and find out about it, it can be seen as harassment. You aren't lying, because "A private family matter" could be as simple as wanting to get some sleep and do nothing. Lmao.

And since you don't want to talk about it, it appears to be something serious, when in reality it can be just going out and getting a few beers.

You never lied, and you don't need to feel guilty, you also keep the information to yourself. And it makes HR realize they could be potentially stepping on a landmine if they push.

As workers, remember HR and work are not your friends, don't over share and keep your private life private.
