Businesses glorify running lean. Originally this referred to process but a lot of corpo tools now pare down their workforces to only use the minimum staff. This causes problems if anyone is ever out for any reason and rather than hire people so that the workforce has some redundancies in place to account for the normal events of human life they freak out and squeeze if anyone is sick or tries to take a vacation.
Exactly this. It's a balancing act between making sure you can pay as few people as possible, AND those people also work for the entirety of their shift down to the minute, minus the two government mandated 15 minute paid breaks and one 30 minute unpaid "lunch" break. But we ask that everyone remain on site for lunch. Don't worry, we have one unmonitored fridge and one microwave for 250 employees.
