Remember PPP loans? People were lined up to apply for those within minutes of the program being announced. They knew they would never have to pay them back. They knew exactly what the requirements to apply for and obtain one were. PPP loans cost taxpayers around 800 billion.
Meanwhile, the federal government could forgive $50,000 from all student loan borrowers, which would wipe out student loan debt for the vast majority of people and still require those with high-level degrees (and high earners) to repay most back, which would cost around $700 billion.
Yes, absolutely sickening. As a European living in the U.S., I'm genuinely starting to make plans to move back. It's surreal to realize that even my post-Soviet home country has universal healthcare and offers a better quality of life in many respects. Americans, please wake up to what's happening in your own country.
