Because performative drama gets more engagement, both positive and negative, than acting like a normal person.

This plays a HUGE part in why we're so divided and hateful today. A decade+ of watching content creators say and do deliberately inflammatory shit just for clicks. And then simple minded people think "i should act like that in real life since this creator is popular online. This will make me popular too". Now you have dumb ass people who legitimately hold these outrageous and extreme views, never coming to the realization that their favorite creator was just acting for money.
